Mitsubishi, Nissan will build mini EV together

That minicar project that erstwhile competitors Nissan and Mitsubishi launched about four years ago is about to go a little more maxi. NMKV Co., the joint venture established in June 2011 by the two Japanese automakers to make minicars, is going to get more resources specifically to ease a move into the electric-vehicle sector. Specifically, Nissan, which makes the all-electric Leaf, is going to have a bigger role in the testing, design, and development of the partnership's mini EVs. A memorandum of understand between Nissan and Mitsubishi, maker of the i-MiEV, is in the works. So far, the joint-venture has sold about 500,000 gas-powered three-cylinder compact vehicles under the two automotive brands, so it must be doing something right. The first Nissan Dayz and the Mitsubishi eK Wagon models started production in 2013. Sales of the Nissan Dayz Roox and Mitsubishi eK Space, which went the higher-roof route, began early last year. Nissan and Mitsubishi started making noise about this last summer, when word came out that the little EV may be priced at less than $15,000 in Japan, quite a bit cheaper than either the Leaf or the i-MiEV over there. As with the current models, the future minicar variants will be produced at Mitsubishi's Mizushima factory in Japan. So far, the partnership would only say that details about NMKV's next-generation mini EV will be released "at a later time," so specifics like range and other performance measures will have to wait. The three companies will soon sign a memorandum of understanding. The companies aim to develop more competitive products by optimizing resource allocation and their respective roles and responsibilities. Nissan will be more deeply involved in development operations, such as design development and testing. In addition to its product planning and project development roles, NMKV will strengthen its management capabilities by adding a new department to enhance collaboration with engineering and manufacturing functions. Vehicle production is planned to continue at Mitsubishi's Mizushima Plant.

Mitsubishi hopes you'll trade driving data for a cheaper oil change

Companies and cities love it when you supply driving data, but how do they convince you to hand it over? In Mitsubishi's case, it's simple: shower people with gifts. The automaker has launched a mobile app that asks American commuters to share data on their driving habits with insurance companies in return for badges they can exchange for rewards. Mind your road manners (such as staying within the speed limit or avoiding sudden braking) and you can get discounts on oil changes and car accessories. You should also receive free coffee and gift cards by the end of 2018. Insurers and local governments have tried similar strategies, but this is the first of its kind directly from a car company. Mitsubishi's Bryan Arnett described this to the Wall Street Journal as a way to "stabilize the business" with alternate sources of income if car sales slip. The catch, as you may have guessed, is that insurers will have your data. The Mitsubishi project will help insurers understand driving patterns and adjust their risk profiles, potentially lowering your rates if you drive safely. However, you're potentially subjecting yourself to scrutiny for every little decision you make on the road, often without context. If you push past the speed limit to get out of a big rig's blind spot, will Mitsubishi know the difference between that and genuinely reckless driving? Probably not. Simultaneously, there's a concern that insurance companies may try to make this kind of data collection mandatory if you want to avoid stiff premiums, rather than a bonus. If they did, you wouldn't have much choice but to sacrifice privacy if you wanted to drive. The move draws attention to the practices of the car makers themselves, for that matter. These are your top 10 worst-selling vehicles of 2012

Despite 2012 being the best year of auto sales this country has seen since 2007, not every vehicle got an equally large share of the sales pie. Some barely got a sliver, as evidenced by this year's list of the top 10 worst-selling vehicles of 2012. We've dug through sales data from every automaker to come up with this year's list and, like last year, we've set some parameters to ensure it includes legitimately bad-selling vehicles. The first parameter is a starting MSRP under $100,000, which automatically excludes what's parked in most one-percenters' garages. We're also excluding vehicles cancelled in 2012, even if they garnered sales through the end of the year while dealerships sold off remaining inventory. This includes models like the Mitsubishi Eclipse, Mercedes-Benz R-Class and last year's worst-seller, the Acura RL. Next, vehicles are considered as they are reported by the automaker, which means that, while sales of the Murano CrossCabriolet were probably low enough to make the list, because Nissan reports only one number for all Murano sales, it was excluded. Cadillac, however, reports sales of the Escalade EXT separately from the Escalade, hence its repeat appearance. Finally, there was the question of whether or not eligibility should be given to Suzuki vehicles, as the brand announced in November that it would end sales in the US as soon as its current inventory ran out. We decided Suzuki vehicles should be included as the brand was offering 2013 models at the time of the announcement, and as far as we can tell, inventory levels remained high enough to satisfy demand through the end of the year.
