Mitsubishi Evolution reborn as electric crossover

Forget everything you ever knew about the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. The potent, raw sport sedan that was a semi-mythical enthusiast fantasy for years is dead. In its place now comes an electric crossover, called the e-Evolution, as the Japanese automaker moves forward in a new era where mobility matters more than performance. It's a tacit admission that a small company can't afford to compete in the narrowest of niches — sport sedans — and a shrinking one at that. The e-Evolution shows Mitsubishi's new strategic direction, and it will be capable of using artificial intelligence, connectivity and other mobility solutions. Enthusiasts will take heart that the e-Evolution has all-wheel drive, a sophisticated three-motor system that works with Mitsu's Super All-Wheel Control to aid traction and driving dynamics. The electric batteries feeding the powertrain are placed in the middle of the concept underneath, which provides a low center of gravity. The design is striking. It's sharp with indentures, a prominent grille and large wheels set at the corners. There's huge air intakes, the ride height is elevated, and the back end features a hexagon design that recalls the spare tire cover from the Mitsubishi Shogun off-roader. The back also has jet-styled mini tailfins that help pass air cleanly by the sides to aid aerodynamics. Inside is a large flat screen bookended by two smaller screens. The e-Evolution also has sensors that help the vehicle read road conditions and try to coordinate the driver's intent. In short, this isn't your father's Evo. That's not Mitsubishi's intent. Rather, it's putting all of its best technologies under the umbrella of its most famous name on a vehicle that will compete in the largest part of the market. 9,800-mile 2006 Mitsubishi Evo IX MR likely to set a record on Bring a Trailer

The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution may be gone from the U.S. market, but it is not forgotten. And it's clear that for some fans, the passion for the rally-inspired Mitsu burns as brightly as ever. We saw that a delivery-miles example can crack the six-figure mark, when this 2006 Evo IX MR with 9 miles on the clock fetched just shy of $138k on eBay. Now, it looks like we're about to find out how high is up for a driven but still low-miles car — with 9,800 miles on the odometer — as this pristine 2006 Lancer Evolution IX MR on Bring a Trailer has already garnered bids of $35k with six days still to go. The BaT car is the same year and model as the $138k eBay example. It features the SE appearance package and is finished in Apex Silver Metallic. The MR trim level included an aluminum roof panel (with vortex generators at the trailing edge), HID headlamps, and auxiliary gauges, and aluminum trim inside. The SE appearance package featured a revised front spoiler, dark-finish BBS wheels, and red contrast stitching on the seats. The car, which is being sold by a dealer in Colorado Springs, appears to be unmodified. A 2006 Evo IX MR with 25,000 miles sold for $37,787 back in June on BaT, and a 2006 Evo IX SE with 4,000 miles brought $36,916 in October 2018. This car seems certain to smash those numbers. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV production restarts after five-month delay

Back in March, production of both the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid and the all-electric i-MiEV ground to a halt over a pair of incidents where overheated lithium-ion batteries caused vehicle fires. Following the rocky start, The Japan Times is reporting that production of the Outlander PHEV has recommenced following the five-month stoppage.
The battery fires were tracked down to a supplier issue before more than 4,300 vehicles were recalled in June, but Mitsubishi received heavy criticism from the Japanese government for the delayed recall. According to the report, though, that hasn't slow down enthusiasm for the plug-in crossover - Mitsubishi has received close to 18,000 for the Outlander PHEV. To keep up with demand, the automaker is planning to double production to 4,000 units a month.
