2015 Mini Cooper Hardtop officially revealed

There are occasions in life when something happens in the outside world and I think, "Damn. I wish Dad was here so we could talk about this."
In the past 13 years, that's happened every time Mini unveils a new model. And that's been quite often in the 12 years since the car was reintroduced - it has expanded to include seven different models, which is a testament to how quickly the updated Mini caught on. My Dad, who passed away in 1996, loved the brand. His first car was a Mini, and he'd race it in illegal rallies around the Irish countryside in his 20s, before he emigrated to the US and tried to (mostly) stay on the right side of the law.
Mini released photos and specs for the third-generation "original" hardtop car today. The company had to slap in the term "original" in there to differentiate it from the Convertible, longer-wheelbase Clubman, Countryman crossover, Paceman three-door crossover, Coupe and Roadster. Coming out with that many nameplates in 13 years is unprecedented growth for a company that's essentially brand-new in the US.

Mini Countryman Park Lane looks classy in Earl Grey

Wade through the very, very thick fluff of the press release that announces its entry into the premium compact market (see below for what we consider to be particularly artful prose in the presser), and you'll see that this is the first special edition Mini Countryman the British-born, German-owned brand has so far released. The Mini Countryman Park Lane is painted up in a striking shade of Earl Grey metallic (clever, boys) with contrasting Oak Red roof and accents. And, while it's possible to design a Mini of your very own with a seemingly endless array of colors, stripes and badges inside and out using the online configurator, the Park Lane is one of the classier jobs we've seen from the factory. For those keeping track, Park Lane refers to a street in the London borough of Mayfair, and this is the third special-edition vehicle from Mini that wears the name. Mini might not replace Paceman, Coupe, Roadster

Nobody could argue at this point that Mini (like its parent company BMW) has not mastered the art (if you could call it that) of filling every niche with its own model. But with the third generation of Mini now upon us, some of the company's strategists are asking themselves what the point is of it all.
The outgoing second-generation Mini spawned too many variants to count. So far the new model has only surfaced in hatchback form, but the brand may roll out quite as many variants this time around. Instead it is looking at its lineup in terms of pillars.
The quintessential hatchback we've already seen would be one pillar. The Countryman crossover would be another. And the production version of the new Clubman concept which Mini displayed in Geneva would be a third. A convertible based (like the existing one and the one that came before it) on the hardtop hatchback is likely to follow, but don't expect too many other versions.
