 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible

This is a 1956 Mercury Montclair Convertible that was owned by my late Father.  The vehicle was purchased and restored in approximately 1977.  The paint was redone again in the late 80's-early 90's.  The engine is the original 312 ci V-8 with an automatic transmission and 12v electrical.  To our knowledge the engine and transmission are original to the car.  My father was very passionate about keeping the car "all original".  This vehicle was never driven in snow, always garage kept and was taken off the road for the winters.  We have been to hundreds of car shows with my father over the years and have never seen another 56' Merc Convertible.  This is a relatively rare model, only 7,762 were produced in 1956!

The car has not been driven on the road for the past 3 years.  We had it looked over at a local garage this spring.  A new battery was put in (not the original style/type), new water pump, oil change, points, condenser and the ignition distributor wiring was redone.  The car starts and runs good.  Vehicle is not currently registered and has not been driven on the road in 3 years.  Overall, its in  good condition but does need work to make it a show car.

The body is solid and the paint is in decent glossy condition.  There is 1 spot on the front of the hood where the clear coat has peeled off (see picture).  Chrome and stainless is in good condition with a few dings on the side trim.  Front and rear bumpers were re-chromed in the 80's.  The only rust I can see is a small spot between the front fender and the front bumper under the drivers side headlight (see picture).  The under body and frame are all undercoated. Tires are period reproductions from Coker Tire, hold air and have good tread remaining.  Speedometer and odometer are not working, true mileage unknown.  Interior seats were re-upholstered in the 70's and are showing a fair amount of wear (see pictures).  The engine was rebuilt in the late 80's-early90's, to what extent I don't know.  Passenger side door window is cracked.  The medallion inside the trunk lock is loose.  Original ignition and trunk key.  Convertible top is in good condition with no rips.  Convertible extend/retract motors work.  Rear differential does have a slight leak.

Question of the Day: Most degraded car name?

Fri, May 27 2016

When Ford came up with a not-so-sporty version of the Pinto and slapped Mustang badges on it in 1974, that was a low point for the Mustang name. When Chrysler applied the venerable Town & Country name on perfectly functional but unglamorous minivans, it saddened many of us. But perhaps the biggest demotion for a once-proud model came when, in 1988, General Motors imported a misery-enhancing Daewoo from Korea and called it the Pontiac LeMans. The original Pontiac LeMans was a great-looking midsize car with fairly advanced (for the time) suspension design and engine options including potent V8s and a screaming overhead-cam straight-six. The Daewoo-based Pontiac LeMans was a cramped, shoddy hooptie that served only to ruin the LeMans name forever, while stealing sales from the Suzuki-based Chevrolet Sprint. Sure, using the once-respected Monterey name on the Mercurized Ford Freestar was bad, but Mercury didn't have long to live at that point. I say the downward spiral of the LeMans name was the most agonizing in automotive history. What do you think? Related Video: This content is hosted by a third party. Junkyard Gem: 1977 Mercury Bobcat

Tue, Sep 4 2018

Cultural memory of the Ford Pinto, 38 years after the last new ones were sold, boils down to one thing today: the notorious "exploding Pinto" stories of the late 1970s. Yes, many Pinto jokes were told, the resale value of Pintos crashed, and few paid any attention to the fact that most of the cars sold with the fuel tank between the rear axle and the bumper — that is, just about every Detroit car made during the era — suffered from the same weakness. The Mercury version of the Pinto was badged as the Bobcat, but nobody told Bobcat jokes. Here's a '77 Mercury Bobcat 3-Door in vivid Medium Jade paint, spotted in a Denver self-service yard. The Pinto with glass rear hatch was known as the Pinto Runabout in 1977, while Mercury called this car the " Bobcat 3-door with Glass Third Door." When a car sits for years or decades in High Plains Colorado, rodents tend to nest in it. This Bobcat's air cleaner made a cozy home for our Hantavirus-carrying friends. The 1970s were the last gasp for eye-searingly green vinyl car interiors. Since the Bobcat was a luxed-up Pinto, the door panels have shinier trim than what you'd have had in a proletariat-grade Pinto. Pinto/Bobcat transmission choices boiled down to two: a four-speed manual or a three-speed automatic. Unusually for a Malaise Era Mercury, this one has the manual. Most Pintos and Bobcats came with four-cylinder engines, ranging from the 1.6-liter pushrod Kent to the 2.3-liter engine that lived on for many post-Pinto years in Ford Rangers. This car has the 2.3, rated at 89 horsepower, but the same 2.8-liter Cologne V6 that powered the Capri was available as an option in the Bobcat. That engine made a mighty 93 horsepower. These cars were not too miserable to drive by econobox standards of their time, at least when they had three pedals. You'd blow the doors off a '77 Corolla with a 4-speed Bobcat in a drag race, though the Corolla got better fuel economy. This content is hosted by a third party. Preposed class-action lawsuit targets 'defective' MyFord Touch

Tue, 16 Jul 2013

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.
