1955 Mercury Montclair

                              Two Door Hardtop

Street Rod Project

1955 Mercury Montclair, 2 door hardtop with clear title. I purchased this car in the spring of 2007 as a basket case. Most of the work done thus far was accomplished prior to my buying the car. My intention was to finish it and drive it. In the past, like now, I have too many projects waiting in the wings that have priority over this car. The car is now rust free, but has had some small sections of sheet metal replaced. The car appears to be all there, but until final assembly is made, it is very hard to tell. Some small parts may have been missing when I purchased it..

Current Condition:

  1. The car is powered by a Ford 351 Cleveland engine and C-6 automatic with a new exhaust system. The car starts and runs, moves and stops but I have never driven it on the road.
  2. The mechanical work and sheet metal repair work are very nicely done.
  3. The front and rear bumpers, bumper guards and grill are all re-chromed and are of very high quality (thousands of dollars). They look fantastic. All of the bumper brackets have been sandblasted and painted.
  4. The engine runs well and seems quite responsive with no apparent problems, but again, I have never had it at road speeds.
  5. The sheet metal that has been replaced is confined to the front floor pans and lower rear quarters. The passengers foot wells, floor pans under the passenger seat, entire trunk floor pan and spare tire well are all original and in very nice condition. Please refer to the photos of these areas.
  6. The dash and most of the interior trim parts have been painted red.
  7. It has an original un-restored AM radio. There is also a spare radio and a spare clock. I don’t know if any of them work.
  8. The dash cluster is in the dash but is loose and not fully functional.
  9. The seats have been striped to the bare frame and springs. They are in good shape and not rusted out.
  10. All of the glass (windshield, rear glass and side glass) and window regulators are there but not installed.
  11. Headlight doors and buckets are restored and ready to install and the taillight assemblies are in good original condition.
  12. The steering and brakes are stock. The steering is tight and the brakes just rebuilt.

Things Unfinished:

  1. The tires are unmatched, very old and unsafe.
  2. The interior needs a complete restoration. There is one each of the original interior door panels and quarter panels with original fabric and all of the interior stainless trim is there and in good condition. This would allow installing the original interior design as an option if desired. The stock interior on these cars was gorgeous.
  3. The body is now in flat black and, as I have said, it is very solid. There is a fair amount of finish surface work that needs to be done (priming and block sanding) before high quality shiny paint is applied.
  4. The body stainless trim is all there but needs some small dent repair and polishing.

Curtain officially comes down on Mercury as dealers remove signage

Mon, 03 Jan 2011

The process of shutting down the Mercury is complete. Ford officially made the decision to close its mid-level brand in June of 2010. In the months that followed, Ford offered its dealers money to stop selling the cars, with production shutting down in September. The last Mercury, a Mariner, rolled off the assembly line in the beginning of October and former spokesperson Jill Wagner said her good-byes to both the car and her job. Now the last piece of the brand has come down as dealers are removing any and all Mercury signage from their lots.

NHTSA probing 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttle issue

Mon, 29 Oct 2012

A potential issue with the speed control cable collar has got the 2003-20003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable under the spotlight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the collar breaks it can cause the throttle to be stuck open.
The issue is limited to vehicles with the 3.0-liter V6 Duratec. There are just 50 complaints so far out of 310,000 cars, but the NHTSA has begun an investigation into whether a recall should be issued.

Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid

Sat, Dec 19 2020

Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner.
