I bought this 2005 AWD Mercury Mountaineer from a friend who unfortunately overheated it on his way home. After it had cooled down, it would not start. He talked to his mechanic who told him it would be easier and more cost effective to just buy a good used 4.0 Flex Fuel V6 motor and replace it rather than rebuild this one. He needed another car immediately and so he sold me the Mountaineer and bought another vehicle. I have another friend who used to be the head mechanic at a Ford dealership who told me that he could install another engine for me in his spare time. He has since gotten very busy and no longer has the time to replace the engine for me so I have decided to sell the Mercury at a very affordable price to someone who has the time to work on it. Up until the point where it overheated, my friend told me the Mountaineer drove like new and had always been well maintained and it shows. The leather interior is like new with the exception of a tear on the bottom side panel of the driver's seat (see photo). The exterior is also overall extremely nice. The previous owner's wife had some parking lot issues with the worse being minor damage to the leading edge of the left front fender (see photo). She also brushed the bumpers in the course of parking and damaged the left front and right rear side marker lenses as well as the front fog lights, all of which are easily replaced. The passenger side outside mirror is cracked and inexpensive replacement overlays are available. The truck has never been involved in an accident and the original paint still shines like new with the exception of the roof which has some peeling (common with these vehicles). Since the roof is as high as it is, you could touch this in with a can of touch up paint and most people would never notice it. There are virtually no door dings and there is no rust anywhere. The plastic panel on the tailgate has a crack due to a design flaw but since all the Mountaineers and Explorers do this, I see no reason to replace it. Overall, the Mercury presents itself very well as can been seen in the photos. The Mountaineer is well equipped with most options including All Wheel Drive, leather, dual A/C, CD, third seat, power seat, power windows and locks and mirrors, tilt wheel, cruise control, alloy wheels, keyless entry, and so on. It has a matched set of BFG Rugged Terrain tires which are still in good shape. Our friend said the Mercury ran and drove great until it overheated. The AWD worked fine, the transmission shifted as it should, the air conditioning blew cold, and all the accessories worked as they should except that both rear windows are not responding to the switch. All the CV boots are good and the truck has no leaks. This is really a nice SUV once you replace the engine and the 4.0 V6's are easy to find. I like the Mountaineer because it is classier looking than the Explorer and is more unique. Wikipedia says that the Mountaineer had the highest owner loyalty of any SUV. This truck is priced very reasonably and could pass for one that has 60k miles based on the way it looks and drives. The Mercury is located in Payson, Arizona (85541) which is about 75 miles northeast of metro Phoenix. I will assist in any way I can in getting the truck delivered to you. Please note that I reserve the right to end the auction early if bidding is sluggish so please don't wait until the last minute to bid to avoid the disappointment of finding the auction closed. Finally, although I have done my best to accurately describe the Mountaineer, it is, of course, sold as is without any warranty. Please feel free to email or call me at 928-468-7060 with any questions you may have. I can usually be reached most afternoons and evenings. Thanks for looking! |

NHTSA closes probes on Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey
Wed, 09 Jan 2013The Detroit News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially closed its investigations into 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models. The separate probes found no issues that pose safety concerns. NHTSA began investigating certain Grand Cherokee SUVs over complaints that power steering hoses could detach during operation, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Of the 24 reports of failure, none alleged smoke or fire in the engine bay, and Chrysler has since modified the power steering cooler assembly to reduce the likelihood of the failure.
Meanwhile, certain Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles garnered a government probe after receiving complaints that the models were equipped with faulty scissor jacks. The agency had received six reports of the jacks failing or causing injuries, including one incident that resulted in a fatality. But NHTSA says the jack failure rate is similar to those found in other vehicles. In those six cases, the government agency found the jacks were being used for something other than changing a tire, and investigators could not determine whether the emergency brake was set or the rear tires were properly chocked.
Junkyard Gem: 1979 Mercury Marquis 2-Door Sedan
Sun, Jul 25 2021As the creator of the now-much-overused term "Malaise Era" (which I say started in 1973 and ended in 1983, full stop), I have a certain affection for the big two-door Detroit cars of the late 1970s. When such a car is built on the very first model year of Ford's long-lived Panther platform and I find one in a junkyard, I must document it. The 1979 Mercury Marquis is such a car, and this one was found in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard last month. Since Ford built the Grand Marquis all the way through the demise of the Panther platform— and Mercury itself— in 2011, it's easy for us to forget that the model name started out as just the plain old Marquis, back in the 1967 model year, with the Grand appellation used for the car's top trim level. While today's Junkyard Gem has some of the features of the Grand Marquis and Marquis Brougham trim levels for 1979 (notably the padded vinyl landau roof and power windows), it lacks the huge chrome lower-body moldings of those cars. Instead, it's a regular Marquis 2-door sedan with a big load of expensive options. That landau roof has suffered greatly from its decades beneath the vinyl-disintegrating California sun. The Panther platform was a big technological upgrade from the late-1950s-vintage chassis technology of full-sized Fords of the 1960s and 1970s, and it stayed in front-line service in much the same form through 2011. Though its ride and handling were much improved, the 1979 Marquis was quite a bit smaller than its predecessors, and that caused some grumbling among Mercury shoppers. Some ham-handed junkyard shoppers really tore up the interior of this car while extracting a few bits and pieces, but we can still admire the Pine Green pleather of the glorious Twin Comfort Lounge front seats. You had two engine choices when buying a new '79 Marquis: the base 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) Windsor V8 making 129 horsepower or the optional 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) Windsor V8 rated at 138 horsepower. This one appears to be the 351, the same engine as had been swapped into the pizza-delivery Mercury I drove in the middle 1980s. New cars sold in California around this time had these giant emissions-numbers stickers on the side glass. Later, they went on the underside of the hood.
Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion
Wed, Jun 17 2015While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.
