Thanks for looking at this listing.  My family has owned this truck for approximately 11 of its 13 model years. My mother in law bought it used from a dealer in 2002 and I bought it from her in 2005 with about 36,000 miles on the odometer.  Since that time, I have put 85,000 miles on the truck and it has performed wonderfully.  It has never let me down.  I am selling it only because the commute to my new job is 100 miles roundtrip and while this vehicle is trustworthy and reliable, the average MPG of 17 is costing me too much money.

Engine is the 5.0L motor that has been in the Mustang for years.  Very reliable and moves this vehicle along with very little effort.  I have gotten as much as 21mpg on straight highway runs while on vacation, but mixed city and highway is about 16.5 to 17mpg.

Transmission shifts firmly and gets into top gear around 37mph.

The tires are about three years old with about 26,000 miles on them.  That may seem like a lot, but look at the pictures where I've shown a penny in the tread.  The original Michelin LTXs were replaced at 95,000 miles and still had 50% of their tread left.  They had dry rotted to the point where safety dictated that I replace them.  I kept them inflated to the max pressure of 35psi and they wear very little.

It has been set up with Sirius Satellite Radio.  Its hardwired through the antenna using an FM Modulator.  I have no need for the receiver anymore so I'm letting it go with truck.

While the vehicle is in overall good shape for being 14 model years old with 121,000 miles, there are a few "defects":

1 - There is rust on the rocker panels (see pictures).

2 - There are a couple of small dimples on the front of the hood that came from my father in law pulling too far into the garage in hitting the vice on his workbench.  They are hidden by a bug deflector.

3 - The Manual A/C & Heater work fine, but Automatic Climate Control does not work  because the blend box door is broken.  Replacing the door is a very expensive and labor intensive job as the dashboard has to be taken out.  The manual buttons work fine, A/C is ice cold and the heat gets hot.  Defroster works fine.  Its just that the Automatic Function where you select a temperature does not work.

4 - The brakes work fine but the ABS light is on.  In as much as my shop and I can determine, we think its a sensor.  I replaced one of the four hubs a couple of years ago, but apparently that wasn't the sensor that was bad.

5 - There are some typical dings and scratches here and there after 13+ years and the paint is faded in spots and has some discoloration from exposure to the elements.

6 - There is one scratch on the door guard and step by the rear passenger door (see pictures) where my father in law bumped up against a wooden fence post.

7 - The rear hatch will not stay open.  One of the hydraulic struts broke its mount.  It needs to be replaced.  It has a rear glass panel that works fine.  I've been loading it from the back using the glass panel now for a year.

Its been a good reliable vehicle for over 11 years.  I don't have kids, but if I did and they were going off to college or needed a first car, I'd hope to find a truck like this for them and together we'd take the time to fix the tailgate hatch issue.

I'll try to post a video of me starting it up and taking it around the block, showing you window operations, etc.

Junkyard Gem: 1989 Mercury Tracer Four-Door Hatchback

Sat, Mar 6 2021

During the life of the Mercury brand, which began in 1939 and ended in 2011, nearly every Mercury sold in North America was a cosmetically enhanced version of some Ford model also sold here. The exceptions to this rule came when Mercury sold Fords originally designed for non-North American markets, and for which no Ford-branded version existed on our shores. The 1991-1994 Capri was such a car, as was the 1999-2002 Cougar (the Mondeo-based Cougar was unique among all Mercuries in that no other cars in the sprawling Ford Empire shared its body). The 1970-1978 Capri was sold through Mercury dealers here, but never had Mercury badging. One of the rarest of all these Mercury cars was the first-generation Tracer, a Mazda design that made its way here via Australia. The bloodline of the Tracer goes back to the Mazda 323, the ancestor of today's Mazda3 and the platform used for all those US-market Ford Escorts of the 1990s. Starting in 1991, the Tracer name went onto badge-engineered Escorts, according to Mercury tradition, but the 1988-1989 Tracers were based on the Australian-market Ford KE Laser. Underneath all of those cars (as well as the early-1990s Capris) lived Mazda 323 running gear, of course. This one nearly made it to the 175,000-mile mark during its time on the road, which is respectable by the standards of 1980s Mazdas. With an automatic transmission transferring the 84 horses from its Mazda B6 engine to the front wheels, this car wouldn't have offered a great deal of driving excitement. 1989 Tracer buyers could choose between a two-door hatchback, a four-door hatchback, and a four-door wagon. Not many Americans hurried over to their local Mercury dealers to buy Tracers, despite the fact that the nearest Ford-badged identical twins were on the other side of the globe. Mercury still seemed relevant in the late 1980s, but its days were numbered. The actress driving the Tracer in this TV commercial seems to have the same deer-in-headlights facial expression of the hapless driver-training students in the 1968 AMC Rebel commercial.

Junkyard Gem: 1979 Mercury Marquis 2-Door Sedan

Sun, Jul 25 2021

As the creator of the now-much-overused term "Malaise Era" (which I say started in 1973 and ended in 1983, full stop), I have a certain affection for the big two-door Detroit cars of the late 1970s. When such a car is built on the very first model year of Ford's long-lived Panther platform and I find one in a junkyard, I must document it. The 1979 Mercury Marquis is such a car, and this one was found in a San Francisco Bay Area self-service yard last month. Since Ford built the Grand Marquis all the way through the demise of the Panther platform— and Mercury itself— in 2011, it's easy for us to forget that the model name started out as just the plain old Marquis, back in the 1967 model year, with the Grand appellation used for the car's top trim level. While today's Junkyard Gem has some of the features of the Grand Marquis and Marquis Brougham trim levels for 1979 (notably the padded vinyl landau roof and power windows), it lacks the huge chrome lower-body moldings of those cars. Instead, it's a regular Marquis 2-door sedan with a big load of expensive options. That landau roof has suffered greatly from its decades beneath the vinyl-disintegrating California sun. The Panther platform was a big technological upgrade from the late-1950s-vintage chassis technology of full-sized Fords of the 1960s and 1970s, and it stayed in front-line service in much the same form through 2011. Though its ride and handling were much improved, the 1979 Marquis was quite a bit smaller than its predecessors, and that caused some grumbling among Mercury shoppers. Some ham-handed junkyard shoppers really tore up the interior of this car while extracting a few bits and pieces, but we can still admire the Pine Green pleather of the glorious Twin Comfort Lounge front seats. You had two engine choices when buying a new '79 Marquis: the base 302-cubic-inch (5.0-liter) Windsor V8 making 129 horsepower or the optional 351-cubic-inch (5.8-liter) Windsor V8 rated at 138 horsepower. This one appears to be the 351, the same engine as had been swapped into the pizza-delivery Mercury I drove in the middle 1980s. New cars sold in California around this time had these giant emissions-numbers stickers on the side glass. Later, they went on the underside of the hood.

Ford recalls 382k vehicles across six campaigns

Wed, Sep 30 2015

Ford needs to repair a total of 381,633 vehicles in North America across six newly announced campaigns, including five safety recalls and one compliance recall. By far the largest of these campaigns covers the 342,271 examples of the 1998-2003 Windstar to double check an earlier recall repair. Among these, 283,413 are in the US and 58,858 are in Canada. The combination of corrosion and stress can cause cracks in the rear axle and eventually lead to the part to snap completely. The company reports a small number of accidents might be connected to this, but there are no injuries. The minivans were recalled for this issue back in 2010, and it was investigated by NHTSA. According to Ford's latest announcement, the reinforcement brackets on some of these models might not have been installed correctly. This time, dealers will perform an inspection. Minivans with incorrectly installed brackets will get a new rear axle. The rest of the owners will be offered a deal to replace the part at a reduced cost. The next largest campaign covers 36,857 examples of the 2015 F-150 to fix a problem with the adaptive cruise control. Specifically, there are 33,481 affected trucks in the US, and 3,376 in Canada. According to Ford, "when passing a large, highly reflective truck" the radar in the system can misidentify a semi as being in the same lane as the pickup. The collision warning system would then activate, slowing the F-150. There's one report of an accident with this happening but no injuries. The fix is simply an update to the adaptive cruise control module software. Ford also has a recall for 1,477 examples of its 2016 F-53 and F-59 stripped chassis models, and they're all located in the US. A manufacturing issue might allow the trucks to shift into reverse without the driver first applying the brakes. There are no reports of any accidents from this, though. To repair the problem, the models get a new transmission shift control bracket and an adjustment to the shift cable. The Blue Oval's safety compliance recall covers 708 examples of the 2016 Fusion and Lincoln MKZ, including 658 of them in the US, 28 in Canada, and 22 in Mexico. On these models, a manufacturing problem with the fuel tank could allow it to crack in a crash, which isn't allowed under federal rules. There are no reports of accidents, injuries or fires. The fix will be a new fuel tank for all of them. The company is also repairing 251 units of the 2015 Taurus and Lincoln MKS, plus the 2016 Explorer.
