For sale: 1968 Mercury Monterey 2 door big block A/C fastback low mile dry western survivor in beautiful and rare "Tahitian Rose" color. Sorted, solid, functional and ready for use now - jump in and drive. A good friend bought this from the 2nd owner out in the Oregon high desert where it was sold new in Medford, and drove it home to Montana. I bought it from him 7 years ago and have put a few thousand miles on it. Really enjoy the car but just purchased a 69 Cale Yarborough Cyclone Spoiler so the "Mega Merc" is up for sale. I've owned all the exotic Shelby, Boss, Eliminator and Cobra cars and this old Mercury gets more compliments at the local Steak N Shake on cruise night than any of them. Well documented car with original manuals, reciepts, factory build sheet and Marti Report, really one of those rare gems that just doesn't come along often. European and Australian bidders welcome. I'll do my best to describe it below: Exterior: Shiny paint, good chrome and glass, straight and rust free. A few minor flaws, but a great weekend show/cruise night car to be enjoyed as is. Not a frame-off concours car, but a super solid original car with one repaint. There is no salt used on the roads here in the land of the prickly pear cactus and sagebrush, and we only get 10 inches total moisture per year. We just don't see major rust issues here. I can't see anything at all other than a few tiny specks the size of a pencil tip at the very bottom of the panel in front of the driver front wheel. Can't see them without VERY close inspection. I can upload under-car pics, but there are no issues whatsoever. Trunk is super clean with only very minor surface rust as shown. There is a small ding in the passenger side roof that isn't noticeable and won't show up in pics. That's really all I can find for flaws except the normal small chips from use, there is one on the fuel door and one behind rear wheel, and a couple of very small chips on the front fascia panel. Chrome and moldings in great shape with no pitting, there are two small spots on front bumper under passenger headlight that have been touched up. Just a super nice cruising car that you wont' be afraid to take to local shows as is. Interior: Nice clean original condition, only the driver seat has been worked on. Rare and desirable "Mercury head" A/C was dealer installed for those high desert summer cruises. Upholstery good, door panels, headliner, dash, and carpets all presentable and really needs nothing. No water or rodent damage or smells. No damage or cracks in original dash, but there is some very minor sun wrinkling that is pretty much imperceptible unless your'e looking for it - I tried to get a picture that shows. Only other flaw I can see is one small crack under 1/2" in the inside edge of the driver armrest and some of the chrome tracing on the dash bezel has begun to fade. Also vinyl has been installed over the top of the rear package shelf. Mechanical: Super strong and smooth original 390 Marauder engine with C-6 trans. Pulls hard and runs out smooth with no noises, smoke, just a sorted car that works like it should. Originally a "Y" code car, the induction was upgraded to correct 1968 "S" code intake manifold and era-correct 4300 four barrel carb. Also upgraded to tall "Mercury" script chrome valve covers and Super Marauder air cleaner. (All original parts are included). Starts great and fast idle works, pulls hard with great induction roar to accompany throaty dual exhaust. Muscle feel in a sports/personal luxury size car. About the only thing I can even think of to mention are a very small oil leak that appears to be from valve cover or back of intake that will leave a spot on the floor, and master cylinder could use replacement as pedal feel is not as solid as some of my other cars. (About a $25 part). A/C was blowing cold till last summer and it isn't as cold as it was - could use recharge. I've held on to this car for many years because it's hard to find a sorted car that's this low mile, original, and nice. Vintage mags shown are in good condition with new lug nuts, center caps are fair, tires have good tread and don't show cracking but they are very old. Original wheels/hubcaps in mint condition come with, and if you don't like the mag wheels you can choose some nice wide white radials to go with the original wheels instead. Pricing/Misc: CAR COMES WITH VINTAGE PERIOD MAGS AND OLD BIAS PLY TIRES SHOWN ***AND*** ORIGINAL WHEELS/HUBCAPS WITH NO TIRES MOUNTED****OR**** THE ORIGINAL WHEELS/HUBCAPS WITH NICE WIDE WHITE RADIALS WITH VERY LOW MILES AND NO MAGS. I got a good deal on this rig and you will too. I see this era Merc bringing very good money when they are clean like this one. Reserve price is under $7k for quick sale. Title is clear and in my name. GOOD LUCK! A little over a year ago, I bought what could be the most interesting car I will ever own. It was a 1987 Mercury Sable LS station wagon. Don't worry – there's much more to this story. I've always had a soft spot for wagons, and I still remember just how revolutionary the Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable were back in the mid-1980s. As a teenager, I fell especially hard for the 220-horsepower 1989 Ford Taurus SHO – so much so that I'd go on to own a dozen over the next 20 years. And like many other quirky enthusiasts, I always wondered what a SHO station wagon would be like. That changed last year when I bought the aforementioned Sable LS wagon, festooned with the high-revving DOHC 3.0-liter V6 engine and five-speed manual transmission from a 1989 Taurus SHO. In addition, the wagon had SHO front seats, a SHO center console, and the 140-mph instrument cluster with mileage that matched the engine. When I bought it, that number was just under 60,000 – barely broken in for the overachieving Yamaha-sourced mill. The engine and transmission weren't the only upgrades. It wore dual-piston PBR brakes with the choice Eibach/Tokico suspension combo in front. The rear featured SHO disc brakes with MOOG cargo coils and Tokico shocks, resulting in a wagon that handled ridiculously well while still retaining a decent level of comfort and five-door functionality. I could attack the local switchbacks while rowing gears to a 7,000-rpm soundtrack just as easily as loading up on lumber at the hardware store. Over time I added a front tower brace to stiffen things a bit as well as a bigger, 73-mm mass airflow sensor for better breathing, and I sourced some inexpensive 2004 Taurus 16-inch five-spoke wheels, refinished in gunmetal to match the two-tone white/gunmetal finish on the car. That, along with some minor paint and body work, had me winning trophies at every car show in town. And yet, what I loved most about the car wasn't its looks or performance, but rather its history. And here's where things also get a little philosophical, because I absolutely, positively love old used cars. Don't get me wrong – new cars are great. Designers can sculpt a timeless automotive shape, and engineers can construct systems and subsystems to create an exquisite chassis with superb handling and plenty of horsepower. But it's the age and mileage that turn machines into something more than the sum of their parts.

Ford is announcing two recalls for North American that affect a total of 442,300 vehicles and multiple model lines. The larger campaign covers the possibility of electric power steering systems that can fail in the 2011-2013 Ford Flex, Taurus, Lincoln MKS, and MKT; the 2011-2012 Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ; and the 2011 Mercury Milan. This recall affects 422,814 vehicles in North America, including 393,622 in the United States, 25,195 in Canada, and 3,997 in Mexico. According to the company, an intermittent electrical connection can cause the power steering to cut out, although manual steering would still work. Ford knows of four minor accidents from this issue, but there are no injuries. Depending on trouble codes from the vehicle, dealers will either upgrade software for the power steering control module or replace the steering gear. The second recall covers 19,486 examples of the 2015 Ford Mustang with the 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a production date between February 14, 2014, and February 10, 2015 at the Flat Rock Assembly Plant. Specifically, there are 19,095 of these in the US and 391 in Canada. These pony cars can show elevated underbody temperatures, which can lead to degradation of the fuel tank, fuel vapor lines, and parking brake cable seals. There are no reports of accidents, injuries or fires from this, though. To fix things, dealers will install a better-insulated fuel tank shield, add thermal patches around the tank and parking brake cable, and put thermal wraps around the fuel vapor lines. You can read the specific build dates and locations for the models affected by the power steering issue in Ford's press release below the video. It's taken four years of study, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has finally closed the books on its investigation into rollaway accusations surrounding 1.56-million Ford SUV models.
The probe, which centered on the 2002-2005 Ford Explorer, 2002-2005 Mercury Mountaineer and 2003-2005 Lincoln Aviator, ends without the federal agency calling for a recall. According to The Detroit News, the investigation was closed due to a "low number of complaints" - NHTSA documented 180 such complaints that resulted in 14 crashes and six minor injuries, but the number of incidents have been slowing. The suspected defect rate for the trucks' automatic transmissions was found to be 4.4 per 100,000 units, and the brake-shift interlock mechanism failure rate was judged to be even lower at 3.4 per 100k.
