For sale: 1968 Mercury Monterey 2 door big block A/C fastback low mile dry western survivor in beautiful and rare "Tahitian Rose" color. Sorted, solid, functional and ready for use now - jump in and drive. A good friend bought this from the 2nd owner out in the Oregon high desert where it was sold new in Medford, and drove it home to Montana. I bought it from him 7 years ago and have put a few thousand miles on it. Really enjoy the car but just purchased a 69 Cale Yarborough Cyclone Spoiler so the "Mega Merc" is up for sale. I've owned all the exotic Shelby, Boss, Eliminator and Cobra cars and this old Mercury gets more compliments at the local Steak N Shake on cruise night than any of them. Well documented car with original manuals, reciepts, factory build sheet and Marti Report, really one of those rare gems that just doesn't come along often. European and Australian bidders welcome. I'll do my best to describe it below: Exterior: Shiny paint, good chrome and glass, straight and rust free. A few minor flaws, but a great weekend show/cruise night car to be enjoyed as is. Not a frame-off concours car, but a super solid original car with one repaint. There is no salt used on the roads here in the land of the prickly pear cactus and sagebrush, and we only get 10 inches total moisture per year. We just don't see major rust issues here. I can't see anything at all other than a few tiny specks the size of a pencil tip at the very bottom of the panel in front of the driver front wheel. Can't see them without VERY close inspection. I can upload under-car pics, but there are no issues whatsoever. Trunk is super clean with only very minor surface rust as shown. There is a small ding in the passenger side roof that isn't noticeable and won't show up in pics. That's really all I can find for flaws except the normal small chips from use, there is one on the fuel door and one behind rear wheel, and a couple of very small chips on the front fascia panel. Chrome and moldings in great shape with no pitting, there are two small spots on front bumper under passenger headlight that have been touched up. Just a super nice cruising car that you wont' be afraid to take to local shows as is. Interior: Nice clean original condition, only the driver seat has been worked on. Rare and desirable "Mercury head" A/C was dealer installed for those high desert summer cruises. Upholstery good, door panels, headliner, dash, and carpets all presentable and really needs nothing. No water or rodent damage or smells. No damage or cracks in original dash, but there is some very minor sun wrinkling that is pretty much imperceptible unless your'e looking for it - I tried to get a picture that shows. Only other flaw I can see is one small crack under 1/2" in the inside edge of the driver armrest and some of the chrome tracing on the dash bezel has begun to fade. Also vinyl has been installed over the top of the rear package shelf. Mechanical: Super strong and smooth original 390 Marauder engine with C-6 trans. Pulls hard and runs out smooth with no noises, smoke, just a sorted car that works like it should. Originally a "Y" code car, the induction was upgraded to correct 1968 "S" code intake manifold and era-correct 4300 four barrel carb. Also upgraded to tall "Mercury" script chrome valve covers and Super Marauder air cleaner. (All original parts are included). Starts great and fast idle works, pulls hard with great induction roar to accompany throaty dual exhaust. Muscle feel in a sports/personal luxury size car. About the only thing I can even think of to mention are a very small oil leak that appears to be from valve cover or back of intake that will leave a spot on the floor, and master cylinder could use replacement as pedal feel is not as solid as some of my other cars. (About a $25 part). A/C was blowing cold till last summer and it isn't as cold as it was - could use recharge. I've held on to this car for many years because it's hard to find a sorted car that's this low mile, original, and nice. Vintage mags shown are in good condition with new lug nuts, center caps are fair, tires have good tread and don't show cracking but they are very old. Original wheels/hubcaps in mint condition come with, and if you don't like the mag wheels you can choose some nice wide white radials to go with the original wheels instead. Pricing/Misc: CAR COMES WITH VINTAGE PERIOD MAGS AND OLD BIAS PLY TIRES SHOWN ***AND*** ORIGINAL WHEELS/HUBCAPS WITH NO TIRES MOUNTED****OR**** THE ORIGINAL WHEELS/HUBCAPS WITH NICE WIDE WHITE RADIALS WITH VERY LOW MILES AND NO MAGS. I got a good deal on this rig and you will too. I see this era Merc bringing very good money when they are clean like this one. Reserve price is under $7k for quick sale. Title is clear and in my name. GOOD LUCK! Starting with the 1939 model year and continuing through 2011, the rule in Dearborn was that most Ford models would get a dressed-up sibling wearing Mercury badges (and Canadians even got Mercury F-100s and Econolines). When the Mustang first hit showrooms in 1964, the countdown for a Mercurized version began. That car, the Cougar, debuted as a 1967 model marketed as "the man's car." Today's Junkyard Gem is a much-abused example of the early-1970s Cougar, found in a San Francisco Bay Area car graveyard a while back. Just as the Mustang packed on weight and price as the 1960s became the 1970s, the even more heavily gingerbreaded Cougar did the same. For 1971 through 1973, the Cougar was still based on the Mustang chassis but weighed several hundred additional pounds and was more than seven inches longer. The curb weight for this car was 3,298 pounds, versus 2,941 pounds for the lightest '72 Mustang coupe. Yes, there's a Mustang underneath all that chrome! When the Mustang went to a modified Pinto chassis starting in the 1974 model year, the Cougar moved over to the midsize Torino platform and stayed there until it rejoined the Mustang on the Fox platform for 1980 (though the honor of being the Mustang's near-twin went to the Mercury Capri at that point). For 1989, the Cougar became an MN12 Thunderbird sibling, where it remained through its 30th anniversary … and then the Cougar got the axe. The Cougar story wasn't done at that point, however, because the name got revived in 1999 with a Mondeo-based version that lasted through 2002 and bears the distinction of being one of the few Mercury models with no corresponding Ford-badged counterpart. Along the way, there were Cougar sedans and even station wagons, with the curb weight of the heaviest-ever Cougar bloating to well over two tons (the winner of that honor is the 1977 Cougar Villager wagon, scaling in at an astounding 4,482 pounds). In 1972, though, all new Cougars were coupes or convertibles, and all of them came with factory V8 power. The build tag on this one tells us that it was assembled at the River Rouge compound in Dearborn and sold via the Kansas City sales office. That tells us that someone drove this car to California after buying it in the Midwest; Ford also built 1972 Cougars in San Jose, so California Mercury shoppers would have bought locally-produced ones. It's a top-end XR-7 in Medium Bright Yellow paint, with the interior in Medium Ginger.

A national law firm, Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP, has filed a proposed class action lawsuit whose presupposition is that MyFord Touch is defective. Specifically, the complaint states that the system - as well as the MyLincoln Touch and MyMercury Touch clones - often freeze, fail to respond to voice or touch commands and have issues connecting to mobile phones.
According to Hagens Berman managing partner Steve Berman, MyFord Touch is a theoretically "brilliant idea" that falls short in actual execution. Said Berman in a press release, "In reality, the system is fundamentally flawed, failing to reliably provide functionality, amounting to an inconvenience at best, and a serious safety issue at worst."
Other MFT issues enumerated within the 41-page filing include problems controlling the window defroster, rear-view camera and navigation system. The suit maintains that Ford is aware of the problem but has yet to submit a workable and acceptable solution to MFT customers. Scroll down if you'd like to read the full press release.

With the rise of Radwood, cars with exaggerated characteristics associated with the 1980s and 1990s are cool again. That means some combination of pastel and/or neon colors, squiggly squeezed-from-toothpaste-tube graphics, nonfunctional decklid spoilers, giant TURBO badging, and kicky youth-centric nomenclature are required if you want your wheels to be considered in compliance with the sacred tenets of Radism. I do my best to find rad machinery while crawling around in car graveyards, and since I came of driving age in 1982 I know a bit about the subject. Today's rare Junkyard Gem shows us the Mercury Division's belated attempt to sell fun cars to rad-leaning youngsters: a Tracer Trio, found in a Denver yard a few weeks back. The Trio package added 310 bucks to the cost of the $11,280 base Tracer sedan (that's about $575 on a $20,925 car in 2022 dollars), and it got the hip-and-trendy young buyer a leather-wrapped steering wheel, seven-spoke wheels, a decklid spoiler and these rad fender badges. I'm going to say that the much louder graphics and candy-cane-colored displacement badges on the Pontiac Sunbird W25 out-radded the Tracer Trio by a mile, but then Pontiac generally out-radded everyone in those days. Even Plymouth got into the act with such radness as the Breeze Expresso and Sundance Duster (we'll overlook the anti-rad Horizon Miser here). Perhaps tellingly, Mercury, Pontiac and Plymouth all got the "Old Yeller" treatment not long after the Rad Era ended. The Tracer name always went on Mercuries built on Mazda platforms, starting with the Australia-built, Ford Laser-based 1987-1989 cars and then continuing with Mexico-assembled, Ford Escort-based 1991-1996 cars. That generation of Escort/Tracer was mechanical twins with the Mazda Protege, itself the bridge between the 323 and the Mazda3. Some Tracers got the a 1.8-liter Mazda engine that was related to the Miata's engine, but this one has the pure-Detroit CVH 1.9. You're looking at 88 horsepower right here; the Mazda 1.8 offered 127 horses. At least the original buyer of this car got the base five-speed manual transmission instead of forking over $815 extra (about $1,510 today) for the four-speed slushbox. As a 29-year-old slacker living in San Francisco's Mission District and driving a hooptie '65 Chevy Impala sedan at the time, I would have taken the manual transmission without the Trio package, had I been forced to buy a new Tracer.
