SELLER REMARKS |

You probably saw the price on this clean 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 and did a double take; I know I did. Somehow the Mustang's grown-up cousin doesn't seem to get the same kind of attention that the more common ponies do, and it's hard to explain why. With V8 power, lots of luxury options, and a sporting look that fits the car's personality perfectly, this represents a great deal of top-down fun for the money.
The Cougar certainly has all the right muscle car details for the era, and it walks with big car swagger that the Mustang has never quite managed to capture. The styling is familiar, if not a little more sophisticated, from the subtle body crease running from the front fender to the rear wheel opening to the hidden headlights that were definitely more Lincoln than Ford. The bright red paint certainly looks right on the sporty ragtop, and the XR7 package included the stripes, hood scoop, and wing out back, adding some definite bravado to Mercury's pony car. Finish quality is quite good for an older restoration, with good gaps and a great shine that'll win more than its fair share of admirers at the next cruise night. A few extra dollops of chrome, including the gorgeous sequential taillights with their chrome surrounds, and this car manages to look both sporting and elegant at the same time, which was entirely the point.
We strongly suspect that the white interior is original, and if that's the case it tells you all you need to know about how well-preserved this car truly is. The high-back bucket seats look a lot more plus than the Mustang's chairs and while there's some minor wear, the overall look is just too nice to consider replacing. Power options include factory A/C, power windows, and a tilt wheel, and it's got a cutting-edge (for the time, anyway) AM/FM/cassette stereo that actually sounds pretty good. Lots of burled walnut appliques give the interior a very upscale vibe and the rocker switches on the dash are just plain cool. The gauges are in excellent condition including the factory tach, which is a rather rare item all by itself, and the white power convertible top fits well and includes a matching white boot. Even the trunk is nicely finished with a correct mat and a full-sized spare.
Somehow the 351 cubic inch Cleveland V8 feels smoother than it does in a Mustang, and it moves the sleek ragtop with effortless ease. The top side of the engine bay is dominated by the big Ford Blue air cleaner and A/C compressor, plus a set of finned valve covers to dress it up a little bit. Turn the key and it starts easily and pulls with a great V8 rumble from the dual exhaust system. Backed by an FMX 3-speed automatic transmission and 3.00 gears out back, it's a superlative highway cruiser that easily lives up to the performance image it wears. The underside is unquestionably original, but thanks to a life somewhere dry, it doesn't have the issues that northern cars always face and you won't have any qualms about putting this one on the road every chance you get. Stylish styled steel wheels should look familiar to any Ford fan, with this car rolling on Cooper white-letter radials.
This is a heck of a lot of car for not a lot of money, and it's only a matter of time before Cougar prices join the Mustang's upward march. In the meantime, you can be enjoying one of the best luxury/performance machines of the era. Call now!

'Tis the season... for road salt. And with that, comes rust. And what does rust bring? Well, for Ford and General Motors, a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation. According to The Detroit News, NHTSA is looking into potential recalls issues with Chevrolet Express vans and Ford Freestar minivans.
The feds have received five complaints that rust has caused leaking fuel filler pipes on 2003 Express vans. Separately, seven complaints have been filed over excessive rust in the rear wheel wells of 2004 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey minivans. The Freestar and Monterey went out of production in 2007. Neither issue has resulted in any crashes or injuries, according to the report.

Ford has announced a pair of recalls, and both are critical safety issues. The exponentially larger of the two recall campaigns affects over 450,000 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan sedans manufactured at the Hermosillo plant between July 21, 2008, and March 4, 2011. The canister purge valve in the fuel tank could malfunction and could cause the top of the tank to crack and leak fuel. That could cause a fire, although Ford "is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires" resulting from the issue. Affected vehicles will have their ECU software updated and their fuel tanks inspected for potential replacement. The company estimates there are 411,205 affected units in the United States (and its federalized territories), plus another 33,605 in Canada, and 7,055 in Mexico. The second recall affects 13 F-650 trucks. The column shifter's park position mechanism may fracture and let the truck roll away unexpectedly. Those 2016 models built in Ohio between July 29 and September 3, 2015 are all located in the US. Fixing the problem will require replacing the steering column and reconfiguring the instrument panel. FORD ISSUES TWO SAFETY RECALLS IN NORTH AMERICA DEARBORN, Mich., Nov. 23, 2015 – Ford Motor Company is issuing two safety recalls in North America. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to these conditions. Details are as follows: Ford issues safety recall for certain 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles in North America for potential fuel tank issue Ford Motor Company is issuing a safety recall for approximately 450,000 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles for a potential issue with the fuel tank. Some of these vehicles might have a canister purge valve that does not work properly, causing internal pressure changes inside the fuel tank. Repeated pressure changes inside the tank could result in a crack on the top of the tank, possibly allowing fuel to leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source can lead to a fire. Ford is not aware of any accidents, injuries or fires related to this condition. Affected vehicles include certain 2010-2011 Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan vehicles built at Hermosillo Assembly Plant from July 21, 2008 through March 4, 2011. There are a total of approximately 451,865 vehicles that might be affected in North America, including 411,205 vehicles in the United States and federalized territories, 33,605 in Canada and 7,055 in Mexico.

To a James Bond fan, this is a very cool and important car. This 1969 Mercury Cougar XR7 up for auction by Bonhams was one of three used during the filming of 1969's "On Her Majesty's Secret Service," the one-and-done film starring George Lazenby that's a dark horse favorite among many Bond fans (this one included, there's a Japanese-market 'OHMSS' poster hanging behind me as I type this). However, this was not James Bond's car in the movie. He drove an Aston Martin DBS, including in the film's pre-titles sequence when he follows Tracy di Vicenzo driving her bright red Cougar. She would go on to rescue him with it in Switzerland (hence the skis), sacrificing its pretty red paint and body work in a demolition derby on ice that they use to shake Blofeld's Benz-driving goons. Later, after getting caught in a blizzard, they seek refuge in a barn -- a pivotal scene in the film and one where this particular Cougar was apparently used. ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE | Ice Car Race However, even without the Bond connection, this Cougar is a very cool car. It was one of only 127 in 1969 to be fitted with the top-of-the-line 428 CobraJet Ram Air V8 rated at 335 horsepower. Tracy had a serious muscle car. Bonham's doesn't seem to have thought to provide a Marti report, but I'm guessing the build of XR7, convertible and a color combo of matching red exterior and interior wasn't exactly a common one. Well, we know there were at least three. With skis and French number plates, too. As for the '69 Cougar itself, this was the only year it looked like this: it got a new body for '69 that would last two years, but the horizontal grille slats that extended over the headlight doors (so cool!) didn't carry over to 1970. It looked worse, and it could easily be argued that it was only downhill from here for the Cougar. The auction is set for December 16 and Bonhams is estimating a sale price of between $130,000 and $200,000. That certainly makes sense given the rarity of a CobraJet Cougar, the film connection and the complete restoration undertaken by the man who found it in a classified ad in the late 1980s. He originally just wanted it for the engine until he discovered the Bond connection. I actually saw this very car at the 50th Anniversary "Bond in Motion" exhibit at the Beaulieu Motor Museum in England back in 2013 (pictured below). There's also a model of the thing sitting next to me.
