1969 Mercury Cougar Xr-7 on 2040-cars
Bellevue, Washington, United States
Up for sale this week is a gorgeous 1969 MERCURY COUGAR XR7 with the original matching numbers drive train. Bought from a elderly gentleman, this one owner 91,642 cream puff has been garaged and babied its entire life.
The 351W motor with a FMX transmission which was rebuilt by previous owner and everything runs, shifts and drives like it should. THIS CAR LEAKS NOTHING!!!!!!! What's that worth to you? The timing chain was replaced last month as well as the steering ram. New disc brake rotors and pads up front were installed professionally and the rear drums were turned and new shoes and wheel cylinders were done as well. The brake booster and master cylinder got replaced by previous owner. The heater core on this car has been replaced too. If you are not aware of these heater cores, most of the dash has to come out to do the job. This heater core has been replaced and leaks nothing. Nice warm heater with NO leakage inside on rug. The distributor has had the points removed and a Pertronix ingnition was put in for reliability. New battery, alternator, plugs wires, water pump, belts and hoses and starter too. The exterior of the car was ground down to bare metal, metal conditioned and then self etched primer was applied. Then the car was DP-90 which is a sealer and 5 coats of high build primer was applied. The car was then block sanded to get car straight and then 3 more coats of high build primer and finish sanded to 400 prior to painting. Then the base coat/clear coat was applied in light green which is the factory color. Car looks amazingly stunning!!!!!!!!!!! A NEW vinyl top was professionally installed and the rare vinyl top trim was re installed. These trim pieces look amazing on the car! A rare option for the car. When the top was put on, both the front and rear windows were removed to do job right in installing the vinyl top. New rear rubber seal around rear window was used when they re installed the window. I found the factory build sheet under the passenger side front feet area. Very cool to find. Plus the factory check list sheet that gets checked off prior to leaving factory. That was found in the rear passenger feet area. Also fun to find this many years since the car was built Inside the car is like a time capsule. Dash has NO cracks. All the gauges work including the LOW GAS light. Tachometer works well. Heater and wipers work on all speeds and the headlights open and close without fail. Plus they stay DOWN when your done driving. Most of the factory tags are still on the car. Rear end tag, transmission tag, power pump ram has tag still on as well as carb. Even the seat belt warning light works as well as door open buzzer while key is in ignition. TILT A WAY steering still works when you turn car off. Also a tilt column. Has the Deluxe Horn Rim steering wheel as well which works with out fail. If you are not familiar with these horn systems, you have to squeeze the steering wheel rim to activate horn. You don't pound on the center of the steering wheel. This is more graceful than a Mustang. Just squeeze your steering wheel and the horn sounds, its as simple as that. Under rug the car still has the factory sound deadening and it is still DRY underneath when i found the build sheet. Front seats as well as rear look new and are original as well as rug. New door sills have been purchased and installed to give it that new appearance when you open the doors. Moving into the trunk, its DRY and SOLID. Gas tank looks brand new. I bought the factory trunk kit from Ken's Cougars which includes the tail light protectors, trunk extensions on either side and the trunk floor mat. Car still has the factory Jack and lug wrench which are usually LONG gone, but they are here on this car. Even the hold down anchor and wing nut stuck around. Spare holds air. The car still has the period correct and year correct rally rims now with NEW BFG's. Chrome trim rings are great looking and center caps look the same. BOTH chrome bumpers are from West Coast Classic Cougar. I sent them my still good looking cores, but i got show quality chrome shine to match the cars appearance. Front grill was all aligned to match closing headlight doors. All the trim on this car still has great shine and looks amazing. Most of the factory markings that were on different parts of the cars suspension and ball joints were all recreated to factory correct colors from what was found on the build sheet. The build sheet tells you what colors went were on the springs and different parts of the undercarriage. New muffler and pipe from muffler back is brand new as of last week. I have tried to the best of my ability to describe this Cougar accurately and honestly and share any and all information that i know of about the car. PLEASE feel free to call, text or email me with ANY questions, concerns or maybe more photos. I have plenty to share. I just want everyone to be on the same page with this car so no one is unhappy when the car arrives. I can assist in shipping and i usually use Royal Auto Transport. Ameer always gets the job done for me when i give out his information. He is a very competitive and reasonable shipper who i have dealt with for 10 years now. They get the job done and are fast and friendly! If you have any questions you would like a human being to answer about the car, please call ME, Mike and i can fill you in on any and all questions or concerns you may have on this 1969 XR7 Cougar. Have a great day and thanks for looking in on this Cougar. |

Junkyard Gem: 1972 Mercury Cougar XR-7
Sun, Feb 12 2023Starting with the 1939 model year and continuing through 2011, the rule in Dearborn was that most Ford models would get a dressed-up sibling wearing Mercury badges (and Canadians even got Mercury F-100s and Econolines). When the Mustang first hit showrooms in 1964, the countdown for a Mercurized version began. That car, the Cougar, debuted as a 1967 model marketed as "the man's car." Today's Junkyard Gem is a much-abused example of the early-1970s Cougar, found in a San Francisco Bay Area car graveyard a while back. Just as the Mustang packed on weight and price as the 1960s became the 1970s, the even more heavily gingerbreaded Cougar did the same. For 1971 through 1973, the Cougar was still based on the Mustang chassis but weighed several hundred additional pounds and was more than seven inches longer. The curb weight for this car was 3,298 pounds, versus 2,941 pounds for the lightest '72 Mustang coupe. Yes, there's a Mustang underneath all that chrome! When the Mustang went to a modified Pinto chassis starting in the 1974 model year, the Cougar moved over to the midsize Torino platform and stayed there until it rejoined the Mustang on the Fox platform for 1980 (though the honor of being the Mustang's near-twin went to the Mercury Capri at that point). For 1989, the Cougar became an MN12 Thunderbird sibling, where it remained through its 30th anniversary … and then the Cougar got the axe. The Cougar story wasn't done at that point, however, because the name got revived in 1999 with a Mondeo-based version that lasted through 2002 and bears the distinction of being one of the few Mercury models with no corresponding Ford-badged counterpart. Along the way, there were Cougar sedans and even station wagons, with the curb weight of the heaviest-ever Cougar bloating to well over two tons (the winner of that honor is the 1977 Cougar Villager wagon, scaling in at an astounding 4,482 pounds). In 1972, though, all new Cougars were coupes or convertibles, and all of them came with factory V8 power. The build tag on this one tells us that it was assembled at the River Rouge compound in Dearborn and sold via the Kansas City sales office. That tells us that someone drove this car to California after buying it in the Midwest; Ford also built 1972 Cougars in San Jose, so California Mercury shoppers would have bought locally-produced ones. It's a top-end XR-7 in Medium Bright Yellow paint, with the interior in Medium Ginger.
Fitting Retirement: Grand Marquis last Mercury off the line
Wed, 05 Jan 2011The signs have come down and retail production ended back in October of 2010. Now, the very last Mercury model has rolled off the assembly line. This last Mercury somewhat fittingly takes the form of a Grand Marquis reporting for fleet duty. It was built at the St. Thomas plant in Ontario, Canada, which is the same facility that continues to produce the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car for fleet and livery duty.
St. Thomas' days are numbered, however, as the factory is slated to close on August 31. When it goes, the Panther platform is likely to follow. So long, and thanks for all the fish memories.

Ford recalls Five Hundred, Mercury Montego sedans over fuel tank woes
Mon, 18 Jul 2011Ford has announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly 3,000 examples of its Five Hundred and Mercury Montego (pictured) sedans from the 2007 model year.
The action, which affects 2,945 vehicles, is due to potentially defective welds between the filler neck and the fuel tank, a condition that could result in a fuel leak or the smell of gasoline reaching the occupants. In the worst-case scenario, a leak could cause a fire. Cars with the affected fuel tank problem could see an illuminated dashboard warning light as a result of the evaporative emissions leak being detected.
Ford will inspect and replace the fuel tank at no cost to owners (those who have already had the procedure done at-cost can apply for reimbursement), and the Dearborn automaker will begin notifying Five Hundred and Montego owners beginning August 15. Check out the official NHTSA press release after the jump for further details.
