1968 Mercury Cougar Xr-7 302 V8 Excellent Original Condition on 2040-cars
Wixom, Michigan, United States
Up for sale is my 1968 Mercury Cougar XR-7. I have owned this car for the past 14 years. It has always been properly garaged and covered with a high quality car cover. It has only been in the rain one time since I have owned it and never in the snow or on dirt roads. I purchased the Cougar at the Auburn Classic Car Auction on Labor Day weekend Sept. 1999. I bought it from a couple selling the car in the car corral. They were from Elkhart, Indiana and had owned the car since 1993. I drove the Cougar back home to Wixom, Mi. and had no issues with it. This Cougar is in excellent original condition. The engine is the original 302 V8 two barrel with 225 hp. I had the engine and the original trans rebuilt in 2006, not because of any problems but because I thought the car deserved it. All parts used were stock parts. No modifications were done. The Cougar's vinyl top and entire interior are original to the car and are in excellent condition. Everything in the interior works, even the original AM FM radio. All glass is original with no dings, scrapes or scratches.Headlight doors open and close properly. Turn signals and tailights work properly. The car has new Coker Red Line tires with new reproduction Mercury wheels. Less than 700 miles on tires and wheels. The Cougar runs and drives great. If you did purchase this car you just get in and start enjoying it! When I bought this car in 1999 it still had its original exterior paint. The factory color was pale yellow or as Ford called it, Saxony It had paint loss and a few minor door dings but was a very straight car with no waves. So, in 2004 I decided to have the Cougar repainted in its original color. I used a local body shop near my work because I had seen some of the classics he had already done and they were excellent. They had the car for about 3 months but it sure was worth it. I checked on it all the time. During the sanding process there was found to be no filler and no rust what so ever on the body.Floor pans were also checked and found to be in very good shape with no rust. It is such a good paint job that to this day that the car has no chips, scratches, or other marks in the paint.I had the original front and rear bumpers re-chromed. They still look great. All emblems on the car are original and in excellent condition. This Cougar is sold as is with no warranty expressed or emplyed. If the car is purchased I will expect a deposit of $2000.00 within 48 hours of the end of the auction with the balance due in 7 days after the auction. If the sale is not. completed within that time frame I choose to keep the deposit. I will accept a certified bank check as payment. The deposit can be made into Paypal. It will be the responsibility of the buyer to arrange transportation for the car. There is a major car transport company in the area and I could help the buyer get in contact with them.If you have any questions e-mail me through my ebay account or call me at 248-760-2064. Remember I live in Michigan which is in the eastern time zone. Thanks for checking out my Cougar. It will make somebody very happy. |

Ford recalls Five Hundred, Mercury Montego sedans over fuel tank woes
Mon, 18 Jul 2011Ford has announced through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that it is recalling nearly 3,000 examples of its Five Hundred and Mercury Montego (pictured) sedans from the 2007 model year.
The action, which affects 2,945 vehicles, is due to potentially defective welds between the filler neck and the fuel tank, a condition that could result in a fuel leak or the smell of gasoline reaching the occupants. In the worst-case scenario, a leak could cause a fire. Cars with the affected fuel tank problem could see an illuminated dashboard warning light as a result of the evaporative emissions leak being detected.
Ford will inspect and replace the fuel tank at no cost to owners (those who have already had the procedure done at-cost can apply for reimbursement), and the Dearborn automaker will begin notifying Five Hundred and Montego owners beginning August 15. Check out the official NHTSA press release after the jump for further details.
NHTSA investigating 725k Ford, Mercury vehicles for stalling issue
Mon, 25 Feb 2013Owners of Ford Escape, Mercury Mariner, Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan models, listen up. According to a report on Automotive News, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into these four vehicles totaling an estimated 725,000 units. The investigation appears to center around a malfunctioning throttle body on non-hybrid models of the 2005-2012 Escape and 2011-2012 Fusion. With Mercury dying off after the 2011 model year, this probe will also apply to the 2005 through 2011 Mariner and the 2011 Milan. There has been some discussion around the Escape stalling issue for some time now, but this investigation appears to be larger in scope than before.
Though not a recall yet, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received 123 complaints of stalling or surging vehicles, while Ford itself has logged 1,472 complaints. The investigation report, which is posted below, seems to indicate that a faulty circuit board for the throttle body could cause the vehicle to go into limp mode, which, according to NHTSA, could cause complaints of both stalling and surging.
Ford's J Mays feels vindicated by Fusion reception
Tue, 25 Sep 2012It's hard to think back now, but the same man overseeing the design of the 2013 Ford Fusion also presided over a rather lackluster period in Ford design, highlighted by vehicles like the Five Hundred and Freestyle. With the redesigned Fusion receiving high praise, J Mays tells Automotive News that he feels vindicated from criticisms suggesting he's not a daring enough designer.
When Mays took over as lead of design in 1997, he admits to having quite an ego ("My head would barely fit through the door some days. I've long since gotten over myself") and the workload to match. With the Blue Oval's portfolio full of premium brands like Aston Martin, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo at that point, along with the bread-and-butter Ford, Lincoln and Mercury models, Mays certainly had quite the challenge.
It was in the mid-2000s that Mays took over just the premium brands, and took on the new title of Chief Creative Officer. At the time, Mays endured some criticism for looking backwards to retro styling, rather than setting a new standard for American car design - criticism that Mays says he is free from with the all-new Fusion.
