Up for sale is my 1965 Mercury Comet. It is Yellow with Black interior. Here is everything I know about the car but you can also email me if I leave anything out and I will get right back to you

The motor: I believe its a 302 (check the pics) my friend who I bought the car from said it was a 302 probably out of a Mustang. It runs great. Starts right up and has a lot of power for a little car. The carburetor has a few rough spots but the more I drive it the more it smooths out.

New Clutch: Shifts nice and is brand new as of about 10 months ago.

The body: The body is very solid. The paint is nice but not mint. Looks better than an amateur but not high end. There are some dents above the rear driver tail light with some surface rust (see pic). Nothing bad. Someone put new floor boards in but never cut away the old rot. So it looks like rot but you can see the brand new grey primed floor pans (lazy)

Interior: When I got the car there was no interior but it came with it so I put it back in piece by piece. I cheaped out and just put a black carpet in from Lowes with no sound dampener. It needs a headliner.

History: My buddy bought this car 2 years ago stripped down. He told me someone had done a really nice job putting the motor in and he did the clutch. He always talked about how great it ran but didn't have the time to finish it. I told him I'd take it because I knew mechanically everything was done. I brought it home and put things back together. I haven't don't the wipers (everything is there) and was really lazy about the headlights and grill. I put the headlight in whether it worked or not kind of thing. The brights work but one low beam is out. I put Cragars on it. I never put a headliner in. It is a weekend warrior but would be very easy to restore to mint. It never gets driven so it rattles and drives like a 49 year old car. When I do take it out, the more I drive it, the smoother it gets. I think for the price its a home run.

Please, Please Please...ask questions. Don't just bid and then bail. Email me your phone number and we can talk about it anytime. I've bought cars on ebay before so I understand the stress of getting something sight un-seen. If you want to come by and drive it, please do. Thanks so much for looking.

Jill Wagner retired as Mercury spokeswoman

Wed, 17 Nov 2010

Jill Wagner has officially given up her crown as the queen of Mercury. With the Ford middle child on its way to the scrap heap, Wagner no longer has any automotive hardware to promote. Given her varied talents, we wouldn't be surprised to see her pick up where she left off with another automaker.
And here you thought you'd never be upset about Mercury's passing.
Thanks for the tip, Gregg!

Junkyard Gem: 1993 Mercury Topaz GS Sedan

Sat, Aug 13 2022

As long as the Mercury brand existed — a period spanning the 1939 through 2011 model years — nearly every Mercury sold in the United States was more or less a redecorated Ford model. The Torino had its Montego sibling, the Crown Victoria had the Grand Marquis, the Cougar was based on everything from the Mustang to the Mondeo, and so on. Naturally, when the folks in Dearborn developed the Ford Tempo compact, a Mercury version had to be created. This was the Topaz, with the official launch of both cars taking place on the deck of the aircraft carrier often referred to as the USS Decrepit. You can't make this stuff up! The Tempo/Topaz, also known as the Tempaz, has largely faded from our collective automotive memory by now, since it broke no significant new engineering or styling ground (this story would be much different if Ford had only put the amazing straight-eight "T-Drive" Tempaz powertrain into production) and didn't have any endearing features other than being a cheap domestic competitor to the Toyota Corolla and Nissan Sentra. Still, close to 3 million Tempazes left North American Ford and Lincoln-Mercury showrooms during the 1984-1994 period. As you'd expect, most of these disposable cars disappeared from both the street and the car graveyard long ago. It takes a very special Tempaz for me to break out my camera while I'm patrolling my local wrecking yards; generally, this means an ultra-rare all-wheel-drive version or at least a very early model in super-clean condition. Today's Junkyard Gem is neither, but I took one look at this spectacular Bordello Red crypto-velour-and-slippery-plastic interior and recognized that this was no ordinary junkyard Mercury. It appears that Mercury had dropped the idea of clever names for base-grade seat fabrics by the time of the Topaz, referring to this stuff as just "cloth" in all the brochures I could find. That's too bad, because Mercurys had cool names for upholstery (e.g., Chromatex) in the old days. The interior is in very good condition but the steering wheel shows substantial wear, so I think this is a high-mile Topaz that got meticulous care from its owner or owners. Ford used five-digit odometers on these cars until the end of production, however, so we'll never know if this reading indicates 65,404 miles or 365,404 miles. The body is very straight, but there's some nasty corrosion behind the right front wheelwell.

NHTSA probing 2000-2003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable models over throttle issue

Mon, 29 Oct 2012

A potential issue with the speed control cable collar has got the 2003-20003 Ford Taurus and Mercury Sable under the spotlight of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. If the collar breaks it can cause the throttle to be stuck open.
The issue is limited to vehicles with the 3.0-liter V6 Duratec. There are just 50 complaints so far out of 310,000 cars, but the NHTSA has begun an investigation into whether a recall should be issued.
