1965 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible - No Reserve on 2040-cars
Union, New Jersey, United States
NO RESERVE - Bid to own this cool old car. Here is a neat '65 Mercury Comet Caliente convertible, ONE OF ONLY 6,035 MADE, ready to be used and enjoyed. The car has been garaged most of its life and has been professionally maintained since my father-in-law got it nearly 20 years ago. >It has a good running 289 two-barrel V8 engine backed up with a C4 automatic transmission. >The engine has had a recent tune up and a Pertronix electronic ignition installed. >The car has had its brake system redone from the wheel cylinders on up. >The car was repainted in its original color a few years ago to driver quality finish. >A new convertible top was professionally installed four years ago. >The interior is all original except for the carpeting and is in nice overall condition. >The dash pad and factory steering wheel are in virtually perfect condition. >There is an under-dash AM/FM Cassette stereo installed and the factory AM radio is still in the dash, unmolested. >All of the glass is in good condition and the windows all roll up and down easily. >The chrome and stainless trim is in decent shape with only one of the "V8" badges missing from the driver's side fender. >The unique Caliente tail light trim is complete with minor pitting. >The bumpers are straight with decent chrome, though the back bumper does have one rust spot hiding under a small bumper sticker. >The extruded aluminum grill is very nice and all the other emblems are in place and in decent driver quality condition. >An amateur rust repair was made to the driver's side floor pan then the undersides were completely coated with POR-15. >The doors, hood and trunk open and close easily with no binding or problems though the trunk lid spring is a little weak. >The heater core went bad a few years ago and has not been replaced since it is never out in bad weather or winter time. It's a fairly cheap part and a pretty easy repair if you want to put it right. This is a great driver quality car that needs pretty much nothing to enjoy. Report: Lincoln getting all of Mercury's ad dollars
Mon, 03 Jan 2011Now that the curtain has closed on Mercury, Ford Motor Company will redirect all of its marketing dollars for the oft-overlooked brand to the Blue Oval's luxury outpost, Lincoln. In speaking to Automotive News, the chairman of the Lincoln National Dealer Council, Bob Tasca, Jr., said, "You'll see a lot stronger presence in the advertising of Lincoln in 2011."
Lincoln spokesperson Christian Bokich reminded AN that the automaker is "preparing the way for seven new or significantly refreshed vehicles" that will be launched over the next four years, and the largest ad blitz in 2011 will focus on the refreshed MKX crossover, as well as the MKZ sedan and its hybrid counterpart. Following that, Lincoln has plans to launch a completely overhauled version of its Navigator SUV, an all-new C-segment vehicle and the overhauled 2013 MKZ, which Tasca says will be "strikingly different from its Ford Fusion sibling."

NHTSA upgrades Ford floor mat unintended acceleration probe
Mon, 17 Dec 2012According to a Bloomberg report, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has upgraded an investigation into complaints of unintended acceleration lodged against Ford vehicles. The investigation began in June of 2010 when just three complaints had been received and it only concerned the Ford Fusion and Mercury Milan, but this was at a time when the phrase "unintended acceleration" made grown men go pale. With 49 additional complaints received since then, the investigation has been reclassified as an engineering analysis - the last phase before a recall - and it has been expanded to include the Lincoln MKZ, making for a total of "around 480,000" units affected between the three sedans from the 2008 to 2010 model years.
The ostensible cause is that floor mats are trapping the accelerator pedal, but according to a Ford statement at the time, the entrapment is due to owners placing the optional all-weather floor mats, or aftermarket floor mats, on top of the car's standard floor mats. NHTSA has backed up that assessment, pinning the blame on "unsecured or double stacked floor mats."
On the face of it, it would appear that NHTSA has upgraded the status not because of Ford's error, but owner error, and Ford has stated publicly that it is "disappointed" in NHTSA's move. On top of NHTSA still being skittish after that other unintended acceleration debacle, it could be seen to be taking its time investigating all of the variables: it's reported that Ford changed its accelerator pedal design in 2010, a "heel blocker" in the floorpan has been considered a potential culprit in how the floor mats could be trapping the pedal, some drivers have said the floor mats weren't anywhere near the pedal, and according to a report in the LA Times, in "a letter sent by Ford to NHTSA in August 2010, the automaker said it found three injuries and one fatality that 'may have resulted from the alleged defect.'"
Report: Last Mercury for retail business built on Sunday
Mon, 04 Oct 2010Ford is already well into winding down its Mercury line, and the autoamker has announced that the very last of the soon-to-be dead brand's products built for retail sales was manufactured on Sunday, October 3. The final Mercury Mariner rolled off of the assembly line at the company's Kansas City facility, putting an end to a brand with over 70 years of history behind it.
Even after the Mariner heads off into the automotive sunset, Ford says that it will continue to manufacture a handful of Mercury models for fleet and government service for a while longer, though mum's the word on how long we can expect that practice to continue.
Interestingly enough, according to USA Today, most incentives on Mercury vehicles have all but dried up, even as the brand's August production increased by 120 percent compared to July's figures. Instead of cash on the hood, some areas are offering no-cost maintenance or similar programs. Even so, Mercury has continued to out-sell Lincoln right to the end - besting Ford's luxury arm's sales by nine percent in August.
