1960 Mercury Comet Station Wagon 42,665 Miles Great Aqua Color & Stock Interior on 2040-cars
Charleston, West Virginia, United States
1960 Mercury Comet 4 door 6 cylinder wagon with 42,665
miles. [But I am having fun driving it every day with the 3 speed on the column,
so the the mileage will be slightly higher once purchased] . 95% original car. This
is an extremely reliable car that comfortably shares the freeways and backroads
with the traffic of today. No expense was spared in making it a reliable,
operable car. It starts immediately, runs smoothly and I would have no worry
about taking it on a long days drive anywhere. New parts with receipts include
these: battery, 4 shocks front coil springs and seats, front end bushings,
wheels cylinders, brake hoses, master cylinder, fuel pump, hood bumpers and
insulation, recored radiator, new fuel and brake lines, new gas tank and
sending unit, rebuilt carb. Firestone
tires are like new. Good exhaust. Original wiper fluid bag. Take a look at the original
interior—it shows only minimal use. The driver’s seat is not sunken in from
years of use. Beautiful steering wheel and horn ring. Everything works except
the radio and heater, and the horn sometimes. The old enamel aqua paint job is
a real head turner—usually they ask “where is the surf board?” There are areas on the exterior of flaking, scratches, bubbling, etc as you would
expect. The stainless side molding is
really nice, and most of these pieces have no dings at all. The original cargo
mat is there in great shape. Under it and the carpet you can see surface browning,
but no weak spots or holes or rot. The
front floor area where your foot goes was replaced previously with heavy welded
steel, and two small rust spots on the
back floor were repaired, but it is otherwise very solid and roadworthy in all
respects. I have the original owner’s manual and the Ford/Mercury Dealer Shop
Manual that will be included. Original keys. All windows roll up and down
smoothly, including the rear window. The headliner is great, but there is a
large hole in it in the back corner about the size of a softball. It could be
covered over or, better yet, simply have a new headliner put it. They are
readily available for under $150 on eBay and elsewhere. Car can be seen anytime
at Charleston, West Virginia. Feel free
to call Bill with any questions. Leave message if no answer. 304-389-3900.

Petrolicious shows Mercedes 280SL as architecture in motion
Wed, Jun 17 2015While still an absolute beauty today, the design of the pagoda-roof W113 Mercedes-Benz SL was revolutionary when it debuted. Moving away from the soft curves of the previous SL models, the all-new generation brought an upright, angular shape that was as much architectural as automotive. In the latest video from Petrolicious, owner and architect Daniel Monti expounds on the inspiration that he gets from his 1969 280SL's fantastic styling. The roof is the most famous design feature of this generation of SL. Look at the top from the front or back, and you can see a gentle, downward arc that evokes the look of a pagoda. That one styling element is also a fabulous counterpoint to a vehicle that is largely more angular than curvaceous. Petrolicious wonderfully illustrates how some of the SL's form-follows-function design aesthetic can be found in the architect's work in this video's heaping helping of mid-century modern goodness.
NHTSA closes probes on Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey
Wed, 09 Jan 2013The Detroit News reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has officially closed its investigations into 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 2004-2005 Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey models. The separate probes found no issues that pose safety concerns. NHTSA began investigating certain Grand Cherokee SUVs over complaints that power steering hoses could detach during operation, thereby increasing the risk of a vehicle fire. Of the 24 reports of failure, none alleged smoke or fire in the engine bay, and Chrysler has since modified the power steering cooler assembly to reduce the likelihood of the failure.
Meanwhile, certain Ford Freestar and Mercury Monterey vehicles garnered a government probe after receiving complaints that the models were equipped with faulty scissor jacks. The agency had received six reports of the jacks failing or causing injuries, including one incident that resulted in a fatality. But NHTSA says the jack failure rate is similar to those found in other vehicles. In those six cases, the government agency found the jacks were being used for something other than changing a tire, and investigators could not determine whether the emergency brake was set or the rear tires were properly chocked.
NHTSA advances investigation of Ford Crown Victoria headlights
Sat, Aug 15 2015The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is opening a preliminary evaluation into reports of suddenly failing headlights on 517,945 examples of the 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis. The government started looking into this problem in April when the North Carolina Consumers Council filed a defect petition with the agency. Now, the inquiry has moved to the next step. According to NHTSA's documentation (as a PDF), it examined its own database and worked with Ford to come up with a total of 3,609 complaints of the front lighting control module suddenly failing. When this happens, drivers lose the low-beam headlights, but the high-beams can be used by holding the stalk. Sometimes turning the switch off and on fixes the issue. Additionally, there are 15 allegations of crashes, and one reported shoulder injury. NHTSA's preliminary evaluations "evaluate the scope, frequency, and consequence of the alleged defect" and don't necessarily lead to a recall. NHTSA looked into this problem once before in 2008 and 2009 and decided that a recall wasn't necessary. Ford also extended the warranty on the front lighting control module for these vehicles. INVESTIGATION Subject : Loss of headlights Date Investigation Opened: AUG 10, 2015 Date Investigation Closed: Open NHTSA Action Number: PE15028 Component(s): EXTERIOR LIGHTING All Products Associated with this Investigation Vehicle Make Model Model Year(s) FORD CROWN VICTORIA 2003-2005 MERCURY GRAND MARQUIS 2003-2005 Details Manufacturer: Ford Motor Company SUMMARY: After receiving a defect petition (DP15002) concerning the loss of headlights and other exterior lighting in model year (MY) 2003-2005 Ford Crown Victoria and Mercury Grand Marquis vehicles, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) analyzed Vehicle Owner Questionnaire (VOQ) complaints received from consumers and identified a total of 605 reports (for all submission dates) alleging headlight failure. The complaints indicate failures of both low beam headlights typically while driving, a defect condition that was evaluated under a prior ODI investigation (PE08066). Most consumer VOQs indicate that the headlights failed suddenly and without warning leaving the driver with no forward lighting, however some report the headlights flickered or dimmed prior to turning off. In some cases drivers were able to turn the headlights back on after a period of time while others reported the headlights would not come back on at all.
