1963 Mercury Comet
I have owned it for ten years and only put about 3,k miles on since I purchased it. Its originally an Oklahoma car, that's why it's in such good condition. Its always been garaged and I never drove it during the winter salt/snow. The prior owner found it in Colorado and sold it to me because he needed a airline ticket to get married in Australia. The first time I saw this car I was amazed. All the awesome chrome details, and the way they sculpted the back to look like a Titan rocket won me over. When I take it to the car show I get an amazing response! My plan was to transition it into a cool 60's sport sedan like they do with late model four doors, I figured that would overcome most of the 4dr uncool stereotype. My vision was to drop in a small block ford and make it go as fast as it looks sitting still. Along with that, I also was going to give it a fresh eye popping paint job. I realize that this ride needs both of those items. I figured that most people wanting to purchase it would have these things in mind as well. This vehicle does has every chrome bit trim present and good condition. I think that any enthusiast can appreciate not having to spend time looking for 50 year old out of production parts. With that in mind, I think that it has all the key aspects of a great build. I have just run out of time and space for this project so anyways, I want to find a good home for it where someone will love this car as much as I do. I feel that the value in its current state is somewhere between the NADA average retail and low retail, and if I get that I will be pleased if it goes to someone who appreciates a piece of americana and isn't going drive it in the salt or send it to the crusher. http://www.nadaguides.com/Classic-Cars/1963/Mercury/Comet/4-Door-Sedan/Values More pictures can be viewed at: http://s1342.photobucket.com/user/Motorsport-Assault/library/Comet more pictures coming...please be patient Craigslist ad: http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/cto/4143463513.html VIN#3H02U514523 3= Model Year H=Lorain, OH assembled 02=Body Series- Comet 4dr Sedan 6 passenger U=6 cylinder 170 cubic inch engine 514523=production sequence *Total production of 02 body series in 1963= 623!!!!!!!!!!!! * cited from http://www.oldride.com/library/1963_mercury_comet.html http://www.mercurystuff.com/1963-comet-vehicle-identification.html http://www.tpocr.com/lincolnbp3.html Wheelbase=114" Overall Length=194.8" Curb weight=2,644lbs Tires brakes and shocks were replaced recently Automatic Transmission Pickup within 14 days of purchase No Tire kickers No Low-ballers Serious Inquires only |

Report: Last Mercury for retail business built on Sunday
Mon, 04 Oct 2010Ford is already well into winding down its Mercury line, and the autoamker has announced that the very last of the soon-to-be dead brand's products built for retail sales was manufactured on Sunday, October 3. The final Mercury Mariner rolled off of the assembly line at the company's Kansas City facility, putting an end to a brand with over 70 years of history behind it.
Even after the Mariner heads off into the automotive sunset, Ford says that it will continue to manufacture a handful of Mercury models for fleet and government service for a while longer, though mum's the word on how long we can expect that practice to continue.
Interestingly enough, according to USA Today, most incentives on Mercury vehicles have all but dried up, even as the brand's August production increased by 120 percent compared to July's figures. Instead of cash on the hood, some areas are offering no-cost maintenance or similar programs. Even so, Mercury has continued to out-sell Lincoln right to the end - besting Ford's luxury arm's sales by nine percent in August.
Junkyard Gem: 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid
Sat, Dec 19 2020Once hybrid vehicles from Honda and Toyota proved to work well in the real world of American streets during the early 2000s, other U.S.-market manufacturers climbed aboard the gasoline-electric bandwagon. Ford introduced the Escape Hybrid for the 2005 model year and sales proved quite strong; its Mercury-badged sibling, the Mariner Hybrid, appeared the following year. The Mariner Hybrid never induced many vehicle shoppers to sign on the line which is dotted, despite gasoline prices going absolutely ape in 2008, though it remained available all the way through the Mercury brand's 2010 demise. Here's one of those rare trucks, found in a Denver-area yard last month. The Escape/Mariner Hybrids got amazing fuel economy for tall, truck-shaped machines, though the serious penny-pinchers with long commutes skipped anything built in the 21st century and began driving up the prices of the once-scorned Geo Metro XFi, gas-sipping champion of the previous decade. The Mercury brand was on the ropes by this time, with not much to distinguish the once-distinctive Mercury machines from their near-identical Ford counterparts. The 1999-2002 Cougar was the last Mercury sold here with no twin brothers over in the Ford showrooms. I do see the occasional Escape Hybrid in places like this, though such gas-saving small SUVs tend to retain their value well enough that it takes a crash to retire one. This Mariner Hybrid hit something hard and either flipped on its side or scraped a guardrail for some distance. The airbags deployed and, presumably, spared the occupants from serious injury. That's the good news. The bad news is that fixing this kind of damage to a 13-year-old vehicle made by a defunct brand just isn't worth it to insurance companies, hybrid-electric powertrain or not. We can assume that the battery pack lives on in another Escape/Mariner. Navigation, Bluetooth, and other features that were considered pretty slick in 2007. This truck was in pretty good shape until the very end. Jill Wagner proved that you can bury a Mercury emblem in volcanic soil and it will grow into a brand-new Mariner Hybrid. That's how science works! You can go to the same field and tap on a Mercury emblem, if you want to get a regular gasoline Mariner. The 1965 Ford Mustang could have looked a lot different
Fri, May 8 2020The 1965 Ford Mustang is unquestionably an automotive design icon, and nearly every generation of Mustang has some connection to that original car. Because it's such a universally-known vehicle, we were amazed to see all the different designs that were being considered. Head of Ford's archives Ted Ryan recently shared photos of design proposals for the original Mustang on Twitter that he and Jamie Myler found, and we reached out to them to find out more. As Ryan initially noted, the photos were taken on August 19, 1962, and they are proposals for the Ford Mustang. Apparently Ford had committed to doing a Falcon-based youth-oriented car at this point, and it did have plans to launch the car in 1964 for the 1965 model year. But after having little success with early design proposals, the company asked all of its design studios — the Advanced Studio, Lincoln-Mercury Studio and Ford Studio — to submit proposals. With only about two years before the planned launch, Ford was understandably short on time, and it's believed that the studios only had a month to create and present these designs. Lincoln-Mercury design proposal View 8 Photos The majority of the designs, a total of five, came from the Advanced Studio, and part of this was because they already had a couple of concept designs in reserve it could present. Two other models representing three design possibilities came from Lincoln-Mercury, and just one model with two options came from Ford. The Advanced Studio proposals are shown in the gallery at the very top of this article, and the Lincoln-Mercury and Ford proposals are in the gallery directly above this paragraph. The Advanced Studio's most radical design is the one that was clearly related to the Mustang I concept that would be shown later that year with huge wraparound rear glass, turbine-inspired bumpers and enormous side scoops. The other proposals from the studio were more conservative, featuring simple lines, grilles reminiscent of the Falcon, and one even borrowing the jet-thruster-style taillights made famous on the Thunderbird. Lincoln-Mercury had some impressively bold designs, particularly its fastback that had buttresses to extend the shape all the way to the tail. This car had two different side trim possibilities. The other Lincoln-Mercury design was toned down a bit, but had two interesting possibilities for side detailing, as well as some crisp, low-profile tail fins.
