"The Mercedes Benz 600 proved to our complete satisfaction that it is the best car in the world" Car and Driver

Being offered here for auction is a 1977 Mercedes Benz 600 Pullman, this is a long wheel base car. Only 428 of the Pullmans were built during 1963- 1981. It was the car of choice for world leaders, heads of state and celebrities.  Money was not an object and cost was not a concern for the owners of these supremely elegant automobiles. They wanted the best and the Mercedes Benz 600 Pullman was the best.

The Mercedes Benz data card ( see pictures for scan of card) for this 600 Pullman tells us the car was originally delivered to the country of the Central African Republic, ( Zentral Afrika Rep.) the date on the card is  30 September 1977. This information has of course has been confirmed through Mercedes Benz US.

The president or rather "president for life" of the Central African Republic on 30 September of 1977 was Jean-Bedel Bokassa . This is important because only 2 months later on  December 4, 1977 Bokassa, in emulation of his hero Napoleon, would crown himself emperor and the country would then be known as  the Central African Empire . The data card from MBUS says Republic not Empire, clearly ordered before the self crowning by Bokassa.
The ceremony cost roughly $20 million dollars US , practically bankrupting the country.

We have found video from Bokassa's coronation day showing the 600 Pullman. We have also found a picture of Bokassa and his Empress Catherine seated in a 600 Pullman that day, we have included that picture in the ebay gallery for this car.

Coronation day please note the 600 Pullman at 4:41

Coronation day please note the 600 Pullman at 1:39

Bokassa and the soon to be Empress Catherine had started out their journey to the Palais de la Renaissance in a horse drawn carriage, well the heat and humidity was too much for the two. They switched to an air conditioned Mercedes for the remainder and only went back to the horse drawn carriage for the last few meters. Please see page 93 of "Dark Age: the political odyssey of the Emperor Bokassa" where the author points out the switch in mode of transport to the ceremony.

The automobile being presented for auction is a very nice example of the Mercedes 600 Pullman . The car has never  been rotted out,  has a very straight body. Chrome in very good condition very small scratches. Lower chrome on the right bottom of windshield has some wear. Car run and drives. The upholstery is in very good condition. Little wear on the driver’s seat and the driver door handle see picture, some small wear on the bottom of the bar tray between  passengers rearseats.
Engine recently rebuilt.
The original engine  had an unusable crankshaft as the main journals were ground on a taper by a poor quality machine shop, and the block inaccurately line bored. In the interest of time and quality another 600 engine was installed
The work done to it was as follows:
Re-bored to first oversize with 8 new Mercedes pistons.
Crankshaft balanced and polished, new main bearings.
Block line bore checked found spot on.
Cylinder heads rebuilt with new valve guides, three angle valve job, new valve seals.
New timing chain and tensioner.
Injection pump sent out to Pacific Fuel Injection for overhaul and calibration.
Injection nozzles cleaned, pressure tested and checked for flow and ejection pattern.
Both alternators rebuilt.
Starter rebuilt.
Ignition distributor cleaned and lubed, fitted with a Pertronix Ignitor solid state ignition module. No points to adjust, very accurate timing.
Both magnetic starter valves rebuilt and leak tested. ( cold start fuel )
New A/C compressor.
Both fuel dampers fitted with new diaphragms.
Water pump with hydraulic fan coupling rebuilt.
Temperature sensing oil control valve for the fan coupling rebuilt.
Air suspension compressor rebuilt.
Power steering pump rebuilt.

The hydraulics, 4 window rams were rebuilt, recharged the hydraulic accumulator, the high pressure pump was removed and housing replaced and shaft seals.
Car has a couple of minor dings. Couple of small scratches that do not show in pictures.
All wood in great condition. The intercom is not functioning.
Have the bar glasses but no the bottles, the flag post are present.
I have uploaded videos and additional pictures of the 600 below are the links.

2015 Chinese Grand Prix shines bright sun on the dark days of racing

Sun, Apr 12 2015

Yes, we tuned into the Formula One Grand Prix in Shanghai China to see a race. But we all know we really tuned in to see if Ferrari, or any other team, could make it a competitive race with Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Based on qualifying, things didn't get off the best of starts: Lewis Hamilton made it four-out-of-four at the front, leading all three Free Practice sessions and then taking pole position in his Mercedes. Nico Rosberg is making the most of his time in the simulator, getting closer to Hamilton as the months go by. This time he lined up in second, just 0.042 in arrears. Ferrari did its best to temper expectations after Malaysia. Even though Sebastian Vettel qualified in third, almost a second behind Hamilton, the Scuderia's race pace is still considered a danger. Kimi Raikkonen's final hot lap went sour in Turn 3 and dropped the Finn to sixth place on the grid. In between the Ferraris, Williams is another team desperately working to maintain its advantage, and both of its drivers capitalized on Raikkonen's misfortune. Felipe Massa took fourth, Valtteri Bottas was in fifth. Daniel Ricciardo led the Infiniti Red Bull Racing charge in seventh, ahead of Romain Grosjean in the Lotus earning a spirits-lifting eighth. The two Saubers continue to show how good the Ferrari engine is, with Felipe Nasr taking ninth position and teammate Marcus Ericsson in tenth. Yet when the lights went out, so did the racing, for the most part. At the end of the first lap, because of some excellent moves by Raikkonen on both Williams' and a terrible start by Ricciardo that dropped him to seventeenth, the order was Hamilton, Rosberg, Vettel, Raikkonen, Massa, Bottas, Grosjean, Nasr, Ericsson, and Pastor Maldonado in the Lotus rounding out the top ten. At the end of the race, the only positions that had changed were the final two: Ricciardo had a laps-long battle with Ericsson, passing, getting repassed, then passing again to take ninth for good, with Ericsson finishing tenth. Maldonado suffered the worst in a battle with Jenson Button in the McLaren, when Button misjudged the entry into Turn 1 for a pass and clouted the back of the Lotus. Button was able to finish but Maldonado had to retire. Yes, there were some decent moments in between, like Bottas getting by Massa at the start, then Raikkonen getting past Massa in the first few corners and the Finn's move on Bottas also letting Massa through.

A weird end to a weird F1 season | 2016 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix recap

Mon, Nov 28 2016

The 2016 Formula 1 season ended with a bang that came from a direction no one expected. Lewis Hamilton put his Mercedes-AMG Petronas on pole position and then got away clean to start the race. Teammate Nico Rosberg did the next best thing, lining up in second and following right behind Hamilton for most of the race. Other than Rosberg's wicked pass on Red Bull's Max Verstappen to retake second place on Lap 20, things stayed all quiet at the front. Come Lap 32 of the 55-lap race, however, observers began to wonder why Hamilton was driving so slow. The Brit, working every trick he could think of to win the Driver's World Championship instead of just the race, dogged it out front trying to push Rosberg back into the chasing mix of Red Bulls and Ferraris. Over the next 15 laps Hamilton's race engineer repeatedly radioed ideal lap times. Hamilton only occasionally hit the times until finally saying, "I suggest you let us race." When the one-stopping Sebastian Vettel blasted his Ferrari from sixth to third, nosing up to Rosberg's gearbox, Mercedes team honcho Paddy Lowe got on the radio to instruct Hamilton to go faster. Hamilton replied that if he wasn't going to win the championship he didn't care about winning the race. Hamilton repeatedly zoomed through the first sector to keep everyone behind, then clogged up the works through Sectors 2 and 3. The problem with his plan was that the Red Bulls in fourth and fifth couldn't get close enough to threaten the trio at the front; even if Vettel had got by Rosberg, Rosberg would still win the Championship with a third-place finish. As it happened, Rosberg finished second behind the disconsolate Hamilton. Vettel took third, followed by Red Bull drivers Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, then the second Ferrari piloted by Kimi Raikkonen in sixth. Nico Hulkenberg took seventh, beating Force India teammate Sergio Perez for the last time as an intra-team rivalry. Felipe Massa closed his F1 career with ninth place in a Williams chassis that he got to take home as a gift from the team. Fernando Alonso scored the final point for McLaren, a touch of sweet for the team after the bitterness of Jenson Button retiring on Lap 12 with suspension damage. Rosberg's second place earned him 385 points for the season, enough to take the World Driver's Championship from Hamilton by just five points. Some have put the title down to Rosberg's consistency, others to his car's reliability.

2014 Mercedes B-Class ED battery much bigger than previously stated

Mon, Jun 23 2014

There was something unexpected hiding in the new configurator for the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive: a $600 "Temporary range extender." Since we've never heard of such a thing, we had to click through for more. The official explanation runs like this: A suite of options to further increase your driving range includes added insulation of the doors and roof for to increase climate-control efficiency, along with an electrically heated windshield and a range-extending charge function. By pressing a button on the console prior to charging, the maximum charge level for battery will increased for the next charge cycle. The higher-capacity charge can provide up to 17 additional miles of range. The passive features that increase range should be standard in all models, we think. But we were more curious about the battery charge situation. How do you increase a maximum? And is it a good idea to do so? The configurator includes this disclaimer, after all: Range extender should only be used on a limited basis, and could shorten battery life if used excessively. How much is excessive? We investigate below. The B-Class ED has, according to the specs, a 28-kWh battery. First, let's understand what this "temporary range extender" is all about. The B-Class ED has, according to the specs, a 28-kWh battery. But Terry Wei, from the Mercedes-Benz USA product and technology communications department, confirmed to AutoblogGreen that the B-Class ED is actually hiding a 36-kWh battery, but the automaker is calling it a 28-kWh battery because that's how much energy capacity is used in day-to-day use. Most automakers publicly claim the actual capacity and then admit they use a percentage of it. The Chevy Volt, for example, has a 16.5-kWh battery pack, but a "full charge" only fills up around 65 percent of that. In the B-Class ED, the 28 kWh of useable energy provides an EPA-certified 87 miles of range. But, since there are eight kWh of reserve, the temporary range extender (we think of it as a software update accessed by a button) can access some of that and offer the aforementioned 17 miles. Now that we know what we're dealing with, this reminds us of an evolved version of the "remote wireless charging" feature that was touted in the Reva EV. Wei said that the reason the feature is optional is because Mercedes doesn't think most people will need it. Eighty-seven miles is plenty for your average EV driver, but when you want to have 100+ in the tank, you can.
