Here is a California 1999 Mercedes Benz 230slk in very good shape, low miles and rare 5-speed manual transmission.  I bought this car 18 months ago in San Diego with the goal of having it as my LA daily driver but now I've moved where I can take the subway to work so I don't need it. Downtown Mercedes Benz has performed the following work on the car:
  • replaced motor and transmission mounts
  • replaced drive belts
  • replaced driver's side window regulator
  • replaced interior and trunk cabin lights
  • replaced trunk and hood struts
  • replaced front brake pads and rotors
  • replaced camshaft solenoid
  • replaced engine air filter
  • installed new spark plugs
  • replaced both lower ball joints and performed four wheel alignment
  • Headliner also replaced.
I have all receipts for work performed.  Car starts up and drives very nicely and the hard-top convertible roof opens and closes every time. Engine purrs through all the gears - the manual transmission makes for a more fun and sporty ride!  There is no rust on the car-some small nicks minor surface marks as would be expected from a 15 year old car with mileage but otherwise it looks great.  Clean interior; no rips in the seats; no dash cracks; just the typical wearing of a car of this mileage and age - but some patina on the rear view mirror - nothing major as it still works.  AC works but could probably use a freon refill.  Spare and jack in the trunk; electronics fully functional as is keyless entry; car comes with 2 keys though one is worn so I use only as a spare; owner's manual included.  A very good car at an excellent reserve price = great value.

Car is sold as-is with no warranty implied.  Please ask any and all questions before bidding.  I reserve the right to cancel any bids or sell this item before the listing ends.  Car is in the Metro Los Angeles area for pick-up - transportation is to be arranged and paid for by the buyer.  A $1,000 overnight cashier's check is expected within 48 hours of the close of this auction, and the remainder within 7 days from the close of auction. Upon receipt, deposit and clearance of the remainder, I will then mail the clear title to you. Documentation will be sent to you after sale is completed and keys will be given to your transport company.  The car must leave my premises within 14 days from the close of auction.  Of course, it you are in the LA area, much of this can be done with an in-person exchange.  Good luck.

Consumer Reports selling its road-tested roadsters [w/video]

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Here's a chance to acquire a celebrity-owned vehicles, and this time at a discount instead of a premium. So the celebrity in this case is Consumer Reports, that magazine that could be equally adored and abhored by car enthusiasts. CR buys all of its test vehicles and usually finds willing second owners within its own ranks, but its opening its small used-car lot to the public. On the forecourt are four roadsters: an automatic 2012 Audi TT 2.0 TFSI Quattro S-Tronic with 6,600 miles for $36,500, a manual 2012 BMW Z4 sDrive28i with 8,400 miles for $45,000, a manual 2012 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 for $39,500 and a manual 2013 Porsche Boxster with 7,000 miles for $48,000.
Those numbers mean a savings of $9,000 to $10,000 before haggling - each car is listed with an "Asking price" so there could be some wiggle room if you show up with pockets full of dough and eyes full of serious intent. Since the money CR earns from the sales go back into the magazine's budget to buy more test cars, however, it probably won't take any oddball trades, so you can forget about getting any purchasing help from that track-day AMC Javelin project on blocks in the back yard.
The vehicles have been taken care of and spiffed up for sale; buyers will take delivery at the CR test track in East Haddam, Connecticut and get a tour of the facilities. While you're there they'll even take you on a lap around the track so you can feel how your car handles when driven by one of its testers. They will probably not help you with advice on which toaster and dehumidifier to buy - you'll still need to get a subscription for that. Have a look at the video below to see a day in the life of a CR test car.

Singer Porsche, Koenigsegg, NSX: Leno's life doesn't suck

Tue, Oct 6 2015

Jay Leno had quite a productive trip this year during Monterey Car Week. Not only did he get to pal around with Ian Callum and check out the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, but the denim-clad comedian also headed to The Quail to talk to some prominent figures in the modern sports car scene. Capping off the fun, he got to take a drive in a Mercedes-AMG GT S, too Perhaps the highlight of this show is a nearly 10-minute interview with Christian von Koenigsegg. The founder of the Swedish hypercar company digs deep into the Agera One:1's engineering details, relating interesting facts about the aerodynamics and transmission. In addition, Leno chats with Rob Dickenson of Singer about its newly reimagined Porsche 911 Targa, and he gets the latest scoop on the Acura NSX's progress from newly promoted Acura Vice President and General Manager Jon Ikeda. If you like hearing about the nuts and bolts of sports car development, then this video can't be missed. Of course, we were there at Monterey, too, and we pointed our own cameras at some of the amazing machinery, both vintage and modern, at all the various car-focused events of the week. Take a look back at some of our own cool footage in the videos below. Related Video:
