I bought this beauty from the daughter of the original owner, who passed away a few months ago. She inherited the car but was not interested in it. So technically that makes me the third owner, but I call it a One Owner because only one person owned and used this car from when it was new in 1975 until now. It has the original paint and interior, and it looks and runs great. A full inspection was done by two mechanics and we agreed that it's pretty obvious the car has never been in an accident.

The motor runs smoothly and has excellent power. I have put about 200 miles on it, and it has not over-heated or acted up in any way. When it starts and drives there is no smoke (no blue smoke, no white smoke or anything that would indicate a problem). The transmission shifts solidly and smoothly. The brakes work well and there are no strange noises when cruising, turning corners or going over bumps. The steering does have some play in it so I suppose that means the steering box could use a rebuild.

The convertible top was used only a few times in the car's life, I am told, and it looks outstanding. It's in excellent condition inside and out. There are some marks/scratches on the plastic rear windows but overall the plastic windows are very good and are not discolored. All the other windows (the glass) are very good except there's a chip in the right side of the windshield. The hardtop is very, very good inside and outside. It does have a lot of little scratches and a few nicks on its chrome trim around the base of the hardtop, probably from being taken off and put on not carefully enough

The paint is extremely nice, especially considering it's 38 years old! Along the slight body ridge that runs along the sides, just above the pinstripes, the paint is getting thin in 3 spots. I have photos of this if you want to see them. There are the usual little nicks here and there but there are not a lot of them and they are all very, very minor. The chrome is all good. Again, none of these items are perfect. This is a nice, original car, and from 5' or 10' it looks absolutely fantastic, but a close inspection reveals the little flaws that come with age and use.

There is absolutely no rust anywhere in or under this car, which has been in Arizona its entire life and was garaged from new.

The interior is very nice but there are some flaws. The MBTex vinyl is 99% great, but there's a 1/2" rip in the left bolster portion of the driver's seat, and two other dimples or scuffs on the seat portion. The floor carpets are very good since they were protected from new by the floor carpet mats. The luggage area carpet is in good condtion and looks great from 5' away, but it is dried out from all the years. The plastic trim around the inside rear edge of the hardtop has a couple of cracks in it from the sun. The owner put a dash mat cover on for one reason: The dash has cracks in it. While Arizona is great for cars in many respects, it is hard on those vinyl dashes. The face of the dash is very good but some of the little black trim strips are missing (see photo). The cigarette lighter is present but not hooked up - it may not work, I don't know. The original Becker Europa II radio works fine, as does the power antenna. The power windows work well. The power locks do not, and there's a hum in the left door when the car's running, so a local German repair shop told me that means the system is working but that there's a leaking vacuum line inside the door. The cruise control is not working. The ignition works fine but you'll have to manually turn the key back to the "run" position after turning it to "start"; it doesn't spring back by itself. The clock ticks along nicely but the hands don't turn. There's shop here in Scottsdale that repairs these clocks but I don't know about elsewhere.

The trunk is clean (it does show signs of use) and includes the tool set and a Michelin spare that is used (maybe from the original set of tires). The original rubber trunk mat is old and cracking but it's still usable. The trunk-mounted battery is recent and strong. The battery box cover is missing a couple of the latch clips so I put a bungie cord over it. There's not a speck of rust down in the spare tire well.

The chrome wheels are gorgeous but they do have some pitting and other blemishes, noticeable on close inspection. From a few feet away they look really nice, very sharp. The owner of the car had new Hankook Optimo H724 tires put on all 4 corners, so they have just about 500 (five hundred) miles on them and they look great and handle nicely. I have the warranty for the tires.

The owner also had the whole exhaust system replaced within the last year or two at a cost of over $1,000, and also spent $900 having the air conditioning system re-done, so it blows cold. There is no paperwork on the exhaust or the AC work, but one look under the car makes it clear the complete exhaust is pretty recent, and when you look under the hood you can see the AC hoses are new and the AC pump looks refurbished (the owner's daughter claims that's exactly what was done).

I have the car's original Owner's Manual and also the chrome top removal handles and the "key" for the chrome wheel center caps.

This is a really nice driver that with some attention to the odds and ends could be a top-notch example. It's close to that now. It cruises great and is a joy to drive, but when I bought it I'd been thinking of a 280SL, and I still want one, so this nice 450SL is available. I have a lot more photos IF you are serious. Thanks.

Pre-Race notes from the 2015 Nurburgring 24-Hours

Sat, May 16 2015

Autoblog has come to the German countryside to watch the Nurburgring 24-Hour race, and just one day in, we have to say it's outstanding. Le Mans has been the highlight of our summer racing schedule for the past few years, the 'Ring 24-Hour event being the appetizer we always skipped. Earlier this year, however, while visiting Miami to check out the Cigarette Racing 50 Marauder GT S, we met Scott Preacher. He oversees digital marketing for both Cigarette and AMG during the week, then comes to Germany to compete in the VLN race series on the weekends, driving an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 for Team Mathol. If Le Mans is the Oscars of endurance racing, the Nurburgring 24-Hour race is the Screen Actors Guild award – the one voted on by the actors, for the actors. In this case it's the race by the teams and fans, for the teams and fans, even though the increasing manufacturer presence has altered the team equation. We were told that it wasn't so long ago that true privateers could win the overall, but that's not really the case anymore. Front-running teams have heavy factory involvement – Audi Sport Team Phoenix, for instance, which finished in first and third last year, has its own 'Ring race center and is running the 2016 R8; Aston Martin is represented by Aston Martin Racing and Aston Martin Test Center, and Bentley has a Bentley Motors team and uses HPT to run another team. The fan component hasn't changed, though, and you can't talk about the race for more than 60 seconds before someone brings up the battalions of spectators. Every driver we spoke to cited them as the most incredible part of this race after the track itself. It feels to us like a giant German Sebring, with thousands of people camped out in the ginormous, forested infield, many of whom have been here since Monday erecting their ornate camping compounds. There will be parties everywhere Saturday night, and so much bratwurst on the grill that the drivers can smell it when as they're blasting full speed through Wehrseifen. Even when we drove a Mercedes S63 AMG Coupe on a lap before the race, the fans waved like it was a competition. Scott Preacher's Australian co-driver Robert Thompson said, "You come around a corner and it's like you're driving full speed through the middle of a carnival." The race field itself could also be called a carnival, with an officially invited field of more than 170 cars. Even on a track that's 24.4-km long, that's like racing on the 405 at midday.

2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 580 First Drive | This thing rules

Tue, Jun 14 2022

I can’t help but giggle to myself cruising around in the 2022 Mercedes-Maybach S 580. It is so absurdly good at its intended purpose. Just like a Porsche 911 is to performance, the latest Maybach is to all-out luxury. Much of the MaybachÂ’s goodness is thanks to the excellence of the new S-Class. Technological innovations like rear-wheel steering, E-Active Body Control and the latest MBUX software systems, all found in the new S-Class, establish a very lofty floor for the Maybach version of the car to build upon. And yes, when you pay the Maybach S 580Â’s exorbitant $185,950 base price, you get a whole lot more than just the standard S-Class experience. Appearances are half the battle with mega-luxury yachts like this car. The Rolls-Royces and Bentleys of the world are formidable on the road, and this Mercedes-Maybach puts up a good fight. It all starts with the 7-inch-longer wheelbase, most of which youÂ’ll see represented in the massive “comfort rear doors.” And we do mean “comfort” — they electronically swing open or shut via a switch on the ceiling or via a touch to the pop-out door handles. A massive radiator-style grille replaces the comparatively subdued grille in the standard S-Class. The C-pillar is noticeably more upright in the Maybach, and it features a light-up Maybach logo that reminds everybody about how rich you are, even at night.  And lastly, thereÂ’s the utterly breathtaking two-tone paint — pictured in Obsidian Black/Manufaktur Diamond White here — that costs $12,750 extra, but is genuinely worth the coin. Robots first spray the whole body in the lower halfÂ’s color, then the dividing line is hand-painted before both it and the lower part of the car is masked off for the top color to be hand-applied by MercedesÂ’ expert painters. There are lots of steps that were just left out, but know that the process can take up to a week in the custom paint shop before the body is returned to the regular production process. The end result of all these changes is a sedan that is both deeply different in character but also recognizable as the S-Class it is based on. ItÂ’s also just as imposing and rich-looking as a Bentley Flying Spur, so donÂ’t worry about being out-classed in the country club parking lot. Deciding which seat to occupy — the driverÂ’s seat, or the lounge-like rear seat — on the way to said country club might be the most difficult decision any Maybach S 580 owner will have to make on any given day.

Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Mercedes also under diesel emissions scrutiny

Sat, Oct 10 2015

The controversy over Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal isn't limited to the US. In Europe, where diesel engines are far more popular, the issue is shining a harsh light on the NEDC emissions test. As already known, the evaluation does a poor job of reflecting real-world production of NOx, and it appears a significant number of automakers are affected. The Guardian in the UK has been reporting on real-world test results from a company called Emissions Analytics. After the latest round of checks, vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, Honda, Mazda and Mitsubishi were found to generate far more NOx than they should. The newspaper also published similar results for Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Fiat, Volvo, Jeep, Citroen, VW, and Audi. On average, the figures are about four times over the limit of producing the pollutant. Unlike VW and its defeat device, these automakers aren't actually breaking the rules. The vehicles perform up to the NEDC lab test for emissions, but those results simply aren't translated to the street. "The VW issue in the US was purely the trigger which threw light on a slightly different problem in the EU - widespread legal over-emissions," Nick Molden from Emissions Analytics said to The Guardian. A big fight to decide the future of this issue appears to be on the horizon. Automakers claim that they can't meet the next round of tightening emissions regulations and are asking for compromises. Although, spokespeople for Mercedes and Honda told The Guardian that the brands would be in favor of the stricter rules. Meanwhile, some European governments began backtracking their support of diesels well before this scandal came to light. The added scrutiny certain hasn't helped the future of the oil-burner.
