1969 Mercedes-Benz 280SL
s/n 11304412004754
Weissgrau and Black with Black Interior

Representing Mercedes-Benz’s trend towards producing more usable and practical sports cars, the 230/250/280SL line was meant to replace both the 190SL and the illustrious 300SL. The car was a comfortable two-seater that was to be neither too big nor too expensive, and exhibited excellent roadholding thanks to the innovative and sophisticated rear suspension design. Built to Mercedes’ usually high standards and employing excellent visibility, the cars were popular and sold well. The cars were continuously developed, with the 280SL being the ultimate version of the car, with its larger more powerful engine and all around disc brakes.

This particular car belonged to the same woman in Santa Barbara, California for many years before being acquired by its current owner about ten years ago. It has been repainted in its original two tone color combination of weissgrau (white grey) and black and has seen considerable freshening by its current owner, including valve adjustment, refinished wood, rechromed tail light surrounds, new Michelin tires, detailed engine compartment, new firewall heat pad, brake service, and new windscreen. The current owner has used the car on several events including the Mountain Mille and New England 1000 and reports the car to be reliable and enjoyable to drive. It has both tops and is equipped with air conditioning and automatic transmission.

The car is in very nice cosmetic condition. The body is straight and solid with great fit and gaps. It was repainted to high standards and the paint shows no significant wear or deterioration. The chrome varies from good to excellent, with very nice chrome on the bumpers, grille surround, and rear fascia. The chrome on the window trims, door handles, and side mirrors has some pitting. The chrome on the hubcaps is somewhat dull as well, although the paint on the hubcaps is excellent. The glass and lights are excellent throughout.

The interior appears to be substantially unrestored and is excellent considering this. The original carpets and MB Tex upholstery are in superb original condition. The gauges and dashboard are also unrestored and excellent. The car also retains its period Kangol safety belts. The wood has been correctly refinished in semigloss finish rather than the high gloss piano type finish that is often incorrectly applied to Mercedes of this period. The car is fitted with a desirable Becker Europa pinstripe radio as well as Behr air conditioning. The visors appear as new and the headliner of the hardtop is in very nice original condition, as are the door panels.

The engine compartment has seen recent detailing work but has not been restored in its entirety. The intake manifold, valve cover, and most of the fuel hoses and throttle linkage have been refinished or replaced and are like new. Other areas such as the inner fenders are intact but not freshly restored. The trunk is correct in appearance with grey rubber mat and spare tire cover. The floor under the mat is solid and free of visible corrosion at this time.

The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily, has strong oil pressure as Mercedes engines of this period should, and runs well. The transmission shifts crisply, the brakes have good initial bite and stop the car authoritatively. The steering and suspension are tight and the car rides well.

This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an attractive 280SL that has proven to be a reliable event car, making this an ideal driver for someone seeking a car with strong presentation to use regularly. It has been well-maintained, is finished in its period original color combination, and retains its lovely original interior. It is desirably optioned with Behr air conditioning, hard top, and Becker Europa radio.

Maybach crossover looking more likely, Smart crossover possible

Fri, Apr 24 2015

Mercedes-Benz executives are still making positive noises about the chances of a Mercedes-Maybach SUV. Following Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche's answer of "most likely" at the Geneva Motor Show, Mercedes Cars head of sales and marketing Ola Kallenius told Autocar that a Maybach SUV based on the next-generation GLS is "the more likely scenario." That's the same Kallenius that told Automotive News just last November that "we have no plans for it [a Maybach SUV]." It's a subtle shift, to be sure, but it's still a shift. The GLS – introduced as the latest-generation GL in 2013 – is still undergoing testing for its its mid-cycle refresh, so a Maybach version is a few years off. That would, coincidentally, give Mercedes time to see how the other super-luxe entrants are faring, and prepare its charge accordingly. Autocar expects that should it be built, it will come when the GLS shifts to the S-Class platform and most likely get the twin-turbo V12 from the Mercdes-Maybach S600 sedan, although the company's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 is possible if there are strong intentions for the Chinese market. Also on Stuttgart's agenda of dreams is a Smart crossover, according to the report. It could be Smart's best chance at profitably extending the range, based on the mania for tiny utes, and that would help both Daimler and the ForTwo's Renault Twingo sibling. It sounds like this is a ways off, though, due to coming up with an engineering solution for the Smart's engine packaging. Related Video:

Ecclestone wonders if F1's upcoming turbo V6s should get augmented sound [w/videos]

Mon, 08 Apr 2013

While every team on the Formula One grid is worried about making a good showing in this year's championship at the same time as they develop a brand-new car for next year's championship, Bernie Ecclestone and F1 circuit promoters have a different concern: how next year's cars will sound. The current cars use 2.4-liter, naturally-aspirated V8s that can reach 18,000 revolutions per minute and employ dual exhaust, next year's engine formula calls for 1.4-liter turbocharged V6s that are capped at 15,000 rpm and are constrained to a single exhaust outlet. Ecclestone and promoters like Ron Walker believe the new engines sound like lawnmowers and that the less thrilling audio will keep people from coming to races. If Walker's Australian Grand Prix really is shelling out almost $57 million to hold the race, every ticket counts. As a fix, according to a report in Autoweek, Ecclestone "suggests that the only way to guarantee [a good sound] may be to artificially adjust the tone of the V6s."
However, neither the manufacturers nor the governing body of F1, the FIA, think there will be a problem. Ecclestone fears that if the manufacturers "don't get it right" they'll simply leave the sport, but the only three carmakers and engine builders left next year, Renault (its 2014 "power unit" is pictured), Mercedes-Benz and Ferrari are so embedded that it would stretch belief to think they'd leave the table over an audio hiccup - if said hiccup even occurs. And frankly, these issues always precede changes to engine formulas, as they did when the formula switched from V10 to V8; fans, though, are probably less focused on the engines and more on the mandated standardization of the sport and the spec-series overtones that have come with it.
No one knows yet what next year's engines will sound like, but we've assembled a few videos below to help us all start guessing. The first is an engine check on an Eighties-era John Player Special Renault with a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, after that is Ayrton Senna qualifying in 1986 in the Lotus 98T that also had a 1.5-liter V6 turbo, then you'll find a short with a manufactured range of potential V6 engine notes, and then the sound of turbocharged V6 Indycars testing last year at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Any, or none of them, could be Formula One's future.

The first trailer for Top Gear's 24th season shows a hands-free drag race

Tue, Dec 27 2016

In the excitement over Amazon's new motoring show, it's important to remember that there's a certain series from the BBC that's attempting to get its mojo back for a 24th season. Yes, we're talking about Top Gear. Since Chris Evans' departure earlier this year, Top Gear news has been relatively sparse, particularly as The Grand Tour and its hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond seized headlines. But on Christmas, watchers of the series' YouTube channel caught a glimpse of the first scene from the next season. Featuring hosts Matt LeBlanc, Chris Harris, and Rory Reid in what looks like a trio of old, dilapidated cars. We're thinking TG is running a taxi comparison. There's a London black cab and a Mercedes-Benz W210 – a favorite of European cabbies – but we aren't sure where Harris' boxy wagon fits in. Did the Volvo 850 Estate ever serve as a livery vehicle? But it's the basis for this comparison that's weird, because the hosts appear to be having a no-hands drag race. The cars veer off in different directions, traveling across what looks like a snow-covered dirt lot. We're assuming hilarity ensues. And while we don't quite know what they're hoping to accomplish, we are looking forward to watching it go down. Top Gear's 24th season doesn't have an official air date, and the video ends only with a cryptic "Coming Soon." Expect to hear more in the next few months.
