One Owner 1981 Mercedes-benz 380sl With 75,000 Orig Miles, A/c, 2-tops, Leather! on 2040-cars
Huntington, New York, United States
1981 MERCEDES-BENZ 380SL VIN: WDBBA45A6BB005076 THERE ARE OVER 70 IMAGES OF THIS COUPE SHOWN BELOW! DESCRIPTION: This NO RESERVE auction is for an original 1981 MERCEDES-BENZ 380SL convertible. This R107 roadster has had a pampered life and it is showing only a little over 75,000 miles on the odometer. It not only looks fantastic but it produces plenty of usable horsepower with the proven 3.8 liter, V-8 cylinder engine under the hood which is coupled to a smooth shifting 4-speed automatic transmission. These engines have fuel fed by reliable BOSCH fuel injection systems and have proven to be long lasting with normal care and maintainence. This survivor car is very clean and it has a decent "20 footer" exterior and interior. Most of the paint appears original, the wood trim is very good, the carpeting is clean and fresh and there aren't even any cracks on the dashboard! This one owner classic convertible has been adult owned, driven and cared for and it has always been garaged. It has the original hardtop which we put on (for the first time in many years) to take the pictures. It looks nearly brand new and comes with the original Mercedes Benz stand and cover. The convertible soft top is also in decent condition with only two very small (10mm) tears noticed and the clear panels are in nice condition as well. The scarce Roser leather interior has withstood time well and it still has that captivating aroma. There is one very small tear in the underside of the center armrest. It is a pleasure for us to present a machine that is this well put together and cared for. The car was just serviced and there is a new complete exhaust system as well as a brand new battery. It just passed New York State's rigid inspection for emissions and safety. We have a good spare tire, jacking tools, the complete tool kit in the roll, roof removal lever tool and 2 sets of keys. There are no squeaks, rattles or other annoying gremlins to take away from the pure pleasure of cruising around and everything on the car works as designed, even the clock. It is well behaved on the road and it will cruise comfortably at current day highway speeds (and above!) without even breathing hard. It also stops and turns as well as it gets up and goes and it tracks like it is on rails! Be sure to look at the current CARFAX to boost your confidence about the history of the car: 1981 MERCEDES-BENZ 300 SERIES (WDBBA45A6BB005076) In all regards this Mercedes-Benz 380SL won't disappoint you. We couldn't tell if the A/C is working correctly in 45 degree weather, but the chances are good that it will need to be at least serviced. It is an honest original machine that could easily be taken to the next level with some TLC. As our photos of the undercarriage will show, even the bottom of the car is relatively clean and solid with only some rust bubbling in a couple of the body areas that we have shown. The paint is driver quality and what you would expect from a driven car used throughout it's life in a suburban environment. There are some scratches, chips, assorted touch ups and blemishes, but no sign of prior body work or fillers of any kind. The glass and brightwork are good. As with all of our eBay Motors listings we try to let our high resolution photographs tell the story about the vehicles that we are selling. We have shots from every possible angle in slightly different lighting conditions with both tops in place and in roadster form. If you study our clear multiple images very carefully, you will see exactly what this vintage convertible is all about. With the low original mileage we feel that this example deserves serious consideration. It looks really good and it is a heck of a lot of fun to drive. The clear images of this vehicle, shown below, will do a much better job of describing the look, style, condition and value of this vintage Mercedes-Benz 380SL than our words ever could. We invite questions and comments and there is NO RESERVE on this auction! Dealers mobilize to protect their margins from automaker subscription services
Fri, Aug 24 2018Six individual auto brands — Lincoln, Cadillac, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo — have established or are trialing a vehicle subscription service in the U.S. Three third-party companies — Flexdrive, Clutch and Carma — run brand-agnostic subscription services. And three automakers — Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and General Motors — have also launched short-term rental services. Dealers, afraid of how these trends might affect their margins, are building political and lawmaking campaigns to protect their revenue streams. So far, three states are investigating automaker subscriptions, and Indiana has banned any such service until next year. It's certain that those three states are the first fronts in a long political and legal battle. Powerful dealer franchise laws mandate the existence of dealers and restrict how automakers are allowed to interact with customers to sell a vehicle. On top of that, Bob Reisner, CEO of Nassau Business Funding & Services, said, "Dealers and their associations are among the strongest political operators in many states. They as a group are difficult for state politicians to vote against." In California earlier this year, the state Assembly debated a bill with wide-ranging provisions to protect against what the California New Car Dealers Association called "inappropriate treatment of dealers by manufacturers." One of those provisions stipulated that subscription services need to go through dealers, but that item got stripped out when dealers and manufacturers agreed to discuss the matter further. In Indiana, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a moratorium on all subscription programs by dealers or manufacturers until May 1, 2019, to give legislators more time to investigate. Dealers in New Jersey have taken their campaign to the state capitol, asking that the cars in subscription programs get a different classification for registration purposes. Automakers run the current subscription services and own the vehicles. Sign-ups and financial transactions happen online or through apps, leaving dealers to do little more than act as fulfillment centers to various degrees, with little legal recourse as to compensation amounts when they're called on to deliver or service a car. That's a bad base to build on for business owners who've sunk millions of dollars into their operations.
New Die Hard movie wrecked 132 cars in $11 million chase scene [w/video]
Sat, 16 Feb 2013It would seem the act of dying hard brings with it lots of wanton destruction of the four-wheeled kind. According to John Moore, director of A Good Day To Die Hard, starring Bruce Willis, There were 132 (cars) that could never be used again. Another 518 required a lot of work. And damn right there were some good cars there... That's the fun of it."
Please join us in one great big collective sigh. Done? Okay, let's continue.
"With Die Hard it's about how audacious the action is," says Moore. "So you have to drive over a Lamborghini. An actual one. And yes it hurts me. I'm a car fanatic." Yeah. Sounds like it hurt really bad... though not as bad as the final tally after all the carnage had been counted: "Someone showed me the numbers on the car chase and soup to nuts, you put it all together it was like an $11 million sequence."
Gordon Murray, F1-driven production and .. the Pontiac Fiero
Tue, Oct 31 2017Gordon Murray's design and engineering chops are unquestionable. But does his carmaking approach owe something to the short-lived Pontiac Fiero, a scrappy little car program that emerged from GM against serious resistance? Murray had a Formula One career that ran from 1969 to 1991, with stints at Brabham ('69 to '86) and McLaren ('87-'91), that resulted in several shelves' worth of trophies for the cars he was instrumental in designing. He moved on to McLaren Cars, the consumer side of things, where, during his tenure from 1991 to 2004, he helped design the McLaren F1 and the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, two cars that took learnings from his two decades in Formula One. What do all of these cars have in common? Three things: They are light. They were built in limited numbers. And they were (and are) exceedingly expensive—when the McLaren F1 debuted in 1994, it stickered at $815,000. Murray went on to establish Gordon Murray Design in 2007. GMD has created some interesting concept vehicles, such as the diminutive T.25 city car (94.5 inches long, 51.1 inches wide and 55.1 inches high), and the OX, a lightweight truck for the developing world that packs like an IKEA shelf and is working toward realization through a worthy crowdfunding campaign established by the Global Vehicle Trust. Now he has created a vehicle manufacturing company, Gordon Murray Automotive, that will use manufacturing methods that he developed under the moniker "iStream." Unlike a unibody, there are the "iFrame," a cage-like construction made with metallic components, and the "iPanels," which are composite. The panels aren't simply a decorative skin; they actually provide structure to the vehicle. Presumably this has something of the F1 monocoque about it. Going back to the three elements, (1) this arrangement results in a vehicle that can be comparatively light; (2) Murray has indicated that his manufacturing company will be doing limited-run production; and (3) to launch Gordon Murray Automotive they are going to be building a flagship model, about which Murray said, "With our first new car, we will demonstrate a return to the design and engineering principles that have made the McLaren F1 such an icon." Which seems to imply that it will be on the pricey side. According to the company's verbiage, "iStream forges an entirely new production method that defies conventionality with its Formula One-derived construction and materials technologies." It also sounds a whole lot like ...
