Mercedes-benz Sl-class Standard on 2040-cars
Watertown, New York, United States

Two registered owner 81,000mi survivor 1971 280SL Pagoda roadster that has been very well maintained and serviced through-out its ownership. I am the third owner. Many collectors will tell you this year is the most desirable, as it’s the final year of production for this iconic W113 car. All numbers match. The second owner had the car since 1975 (40 years). The vehicle was bought in the Albany NY area at a respected area Mercedes dealership, and stayed here its entire life. However, NO salt and winters for this beauty. Garaged and dust covered every winter. In fact, I was also told by the second owner that he only drove it on nice days so it has seen minimal “weather” in its life. It was never his everyday driver. He verifies mileage is accurate. All maintenance was done on a regular basis which accounts for its very good original condition. All glass is in excellent condition. Chrome is in excellent original condition and shines right up. The paint is in overall good shape (drivers 2) with some small chips here and there… minimal. As you can see from the pictures the paint shines beautifully. The car has had one repaint in correct color (code)…”years ago” (1980s) according to the long term owner. Other than that the car is original. The tires were new in 2013 and have minimal miles so that is one less thing you have to worry about. The trunk is clean and has what appears to be the original spare and spare cover! Factory manual and tools are included… see pictures! All the gauges appear to work. Original Becker radio works!! It is missing the antenna. Car has the coveted original factory air (which blows cold, and compressor comes on) and the rarer / desirable 4 speed transmission. The soft top is original and in very nice shape… plastic window is clear and intact. Goes up and down without issue and fits properly in the storage compartment. Undercarriage is very clean and solid… rocker covers were removed and no evidence of rust was found. Stainless steel exhaust is in very good shape… but the tail pipe extenders are missing. The plastic bezel piece around the passenger side headlight is cracked in half… one piece is on the car .The interior is original and in overall good shape. Seats look good with no age cracking of black leather, but there is a small tear by seat adjustment lever driver’s side, and a small tear in back of driver’s seat. There is an approx. 1.25 inch round hole in passenger seat. The seat levers function properly. The majority of the rug is very good. There is some wear of the original rubber matting on the drivers side. The rest of it is complete without rips or tears. Dash is complete and its paint and chrome are very nice. The wood trim is all there but could use a light sanding and refinish. The heater and air controllers (knobs ) are missing but you can still run the air if you wish. Wipers work. Horn works. Steering wheel is in PERFECT shape. The dash has 2 small hairline cracks (not all that noticeable) in the leather but otherwise looks very presentable. Since the car was garaged its entire life there is no sun fading typically associated with convertibles. The pagoda top is in very good condition… fits perfectly with no gaps…. weather stripping is very nice. It is numbers matching with the car, and its paint is excellent. It has the optional chrome stripping along the top. The headliner is intact with no rips, tears or sags, but does have some stains to be removed (see pictures). The top comes off with ease with the aforementioned Mercedes tool. I have given what I believe to be a fair and honest assessment of this car. It is not perfect but it is still in great shape and has received many compliments at the shop!! We all know what these cars are selling for when in drivers #1 condition so here is a chance to buy one at a reasonable reserve. You can enjoy it now, turn many heads (and you will) and a few years down the road fully restore if you desire. You know what they say though… they are only original once!! The car has never needed a restoration because it has been so well taken care of! The car is rock solid.…

The cars of notorious dictators
Tue, Apr 21 2015It's good to be the king, at least until your people have had enough of you. Last week, we brought you famous presidential cars. This week, we're going to the opposite end of the political spectrum, looking at what history's mad men drove throughout their repressive and violent regimes. These dictators were absolutely powerful, and absolutely corrupt. More nightmares for their people than rulers, their iron-fisted control gave them the ability to satisfy any wild desire with nearly limitless funds. While they all splurged on luxury goods, cars were a particular passion of many dictators. Cars make a powerful statement to the public about wealth, status and control. It's how you are presented at ground level to your adoring masses or mortal enemies. A custom luxury car with plenty of armor plating reinforced the specialness and "otherness" of the ruler to friend and foe alike. Muammar Gaddafi, Libya, 1969 - 2011 Lybia's President for Life Muammar Gaddafi fancied himself not just a car enthusiast, but a car designer for the masses as well. He supposedly designed a car called the "Saroukh el-Jamahiriya" or Libyan Rocket. It had a 230-horsepower V6 and the nose and tail of a rocket. He was trying to produce a safer car. What makes it safe car? Tough to say. Not a lot was ever released it. Apparently the el-Jamahiriya did come with airbags and collapsible fenders in case of a collision. A spokesperson said "The invention of the safest car in the world is proof that the Libyan revolution is built on the happiness of man." We'll just have to take his word for it. When he wasn't designing his own cars, Gaddafi was ordering up custom rides, large and small. Besides a heavily armored BMW 7 Series and a Mercedes S-Class stretch limo, Gaddafi had this custom Fiat built at a cost of $260,000. The gold in the trim is real gold (of course) and comes with some touches that are pure Gaddafi. For instance, the Fiat badge was replaced with an outline of the continent of Africa, with Libya cut out in green. Rebels seized the Fiat and Gaddafi's other trappings of power after putting an end to Gaddafi's 42 years in control. Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier, Haiti, 1971 - 1986 Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier was the second-generation dictator of Hati from 1971 to 1986. He made life hell for his people for 15 long years, starting when his father died when he was just 19 years old. Imagine if Justin Beiber was given a tiny island nation to run.
Brabus spools up new 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe
Wed, Mar 4 2015With a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 cranking out 577 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG Coupe is not the first vehicle we'd figure was in need of an upgrade. But the folks over at Brabus have evidently felt otherwise, bringing the 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe to the Geneva Motor Show this year. Now the name might be slightly misleading, but not by much: the revving heart of this beast has been bored out to 5.9 liters and its output raised to 838 horsepower (by our standards). The modified engine also includes new turbochargers, breathing apparati and a remapped ECU to produce an even more prodigious 1,069 pound-feet of torque – although to keep the whole thing from going up in flames, Brabus has limited that last figure to 848 lb-ft. The top speed has been limited to "only" 217 miles per hour to keep the tires from melting, but it'll reach 62 mph from a standstill in just 3.5 seconds. That makes this bahn-stormer blisteringly fast, though the seven-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive system have been left largely unchanged. Naturally that's not the end of the story, as the Brabus 850 6.0 Biturbo Coupe also features a full new carbon-fiber aero kit, wheel options ranging from 18 inches to 22, a completely refitted interior and oh, so much more. Chances are you'll never see one sitting still, so you'll want to scope it out in the slideshow of live images from the floor of the Geneva Palexpo for a closer look. Related Video:
Mercedes to roll out C63 AMG late in 2014 with 4.0L V8
Mon, 30 Dec 2013The new 2014 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is upon us, launching initially in North America with turbocharged four-cylinder C300 4Matic and six-cylinder C400 4Matic flavors. But that's only the tip of the proverbial iceberg when it comes to the vast array of powertrain configurations that will be offered in the new C-Class in markets around the world. Orders will soon be rolling in for gasoline, hybrid and diesel engines with four, six or eight cylinders, driving the rear wheels or all four, with the seven-speed automatic transmission soon to be replaced by a new nine-speed unit. But what enthusiasts are really looking forward to is the next C63 AMG.
As BMW has done with the M3 (and new M4), Mercedes has gradually ratcheted up the cylinder count in its AMG C-Class, graduating from the 3.6-liter V6 in the original C36 AMG to the 4.3-liter V8 in the C43 AMG, then the 5.5-liter V8 in the C55 AMG before going the distance with the sublime 6.2-liter V8 in the C63 AMG. Like its rivals, Mercedes is expected to use turbochargers as a replacement for displacement in the next model, but unlike its Bavarian rival, it won't be losing any cylinders in the process.
Skipping the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 that has gone on to power other AMG models, the next C63 AMG is still expected to introduce a new 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 producing between 450 and 500 horsepower. It'll also reportedly keep the same seven-speed automatic transmission (instead of switching to the new nine-speed), but the jury's still out on whether it'll come with rear- or all-wheel drive (or offer buyers the choice). The downsized V8 - codenamed M177 - is then expected to find its way into other models, but the C-Class will be the first to get it when it arrives before the end of the new year ahead.
