The SL63 AMG is the latest Mercedes to be blessed with the 6.2-liter V-8 engine the company insists on calling a 6.3. Built by AMG, the engine delivers 90 percent of its peak 465 lb-ft of torque at just 2000 rpm. The SL63 AMG's brakes are just as impressive, with 14.2-inch vented rotors in the front and 13.0-inch vented rotors at the rear. The SL65 AMG? It's fitted with brakes 1.2 inches larger at each corner. The 19-inch wheels on the SL63 AMG -- 8.5 and 9.5 inches wide -- are wrapped in 255/35 R19 rubber in the front and 285/30 R19 in the rear. Separating the SL63 AMG suspension from lesser SLs are AMG struts with firmer damping and a changes to a host of safety and stability systems like Brake Assist and ASR traction control. Pressing a "Sport" switch on the center console reduces body roll and provides tighter shock damping. Mercedes says that switching the "Sport" switch reduces body roll 95 percent compared with an identical vehicle without Active Body Control. The visual differences between the eight- and 12-cylinder SL AMG models are subtle almost to the point of nonexistent. The SL63 AMG gets the more attractive triple-spoke wheels and a blackout front-apron trim piece. Rounding out the package are larger cooling intakes, gills behind the front wheels, and a black grille in front, while the best view comes from the roadster's rear: A muscular black air diffuser and two sets of chrome exhaust pipes enhance the view other drivers will see most frequently. Inside the SL63 AMG, lucky owners can appreciate Nappa leather, plenty of carbon fiber, AMG sport seats, an AMG steering wheel, and a revised instrument cluster with tach and speedometer needles that swing to the maximum position and back when the car is turned on, as in a Subaru. Of course, there's the AIRSCARF system that has three different speeds of heating your neck and also can be set on automatic, in which case the system will adjust based in temperature sensors and the speed of the car. UK workers strand car on island of asphalt to keep working
Wed, 06 Feb 2013Generally speaking, when you illegally park your car, you're likely to get ticketed and towed, but there is probably at least one motorist in Scotland who wishes that was the case. After workers had blocked off a portion of the parking lot for the Edinburgh Waverley railway station, the driver of this Mercedes-Benz S-Class reportedly moved some of the barriers to park in one of the empty spots.
Rather than having the vehicle towed, the work crew simply tore up the asphalt around the leaving just the one parking spot intact, and as you can see in the image above (posted to the Twitter account of Harold Norstad), the crew even built a small asphalt ramp so the car could get off its blacktop pedestal. Since this happened last week, there's no word as to whether the car was eventually moved or towed for the resurfacing work to continue.
Let this be a warning...
2016 Malaysian Grand Prix recap: Surprises and missed opportunities
Mon, Oct 3 2016Mercedes-AMG Petronas pilot Lewis Hamilton drove so well in the run-up to the Malaysian Grand Prix that he said before the race, "Honestly, I don't feel anything is going to stop us." On Sunday, the Sepang race showed what it thought of plans and predictions. Heading into the right-hand Turn 1, Sebastian Vettel practically recreated the dust-up at the Belgian Grand Prix three races ago. When Mercedes' Nico Rosberg swept across from the outside line toward the apex, Red Bull's Max Verstappen had to jink right to avoid, touching Vettel's Ferrari on the inside. Vettel speared straight on and hit Rosberg. Vettel's left front suspension broke, ending his race. Rosberg spun and got moving again, but at the back of the pack. That appeared to put Hamilton on a clear run to the checkered flag. His car looked perfect, his pace was perfect, he easily kept Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen behind. A result that would have seen Hamilton retake control of the Driver's Championship – at Petronas' home race – got crushed on Lap 41 when Hamilton's engine blew down the main straight. That put Ricciardo in the lead, followed closely by his teammate. Just two laps before Hamilton's exit, Ricciardo and Verstappen had battled for second place with some of the best driving we've seen all season. Ricciardo drove as if exorcising the demons of missed opportunities earlier in the year, keeping the young Dutchman behind. The two Red Bulls took the flag fifteen laps later in that order, clocking the first one-two finish for a team other than Mercedes since 2014. It's Red Bull's first one-two since Brazil 2013, when Vettel and Mark Weber took the top steps at the last race of the V8 era. Rosberg recovered to take third in spite of a ten-second penalty for an optimistic pass on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn crossed the line 12 seconds later, followed by Valtteri Bottas in the Williams and Sergio Perez in the Force India. In another Belgium repeat, Fernando Alonso drove from the back of the grid to finish seventh. Nico Hulkenberg secured eighth, Jenson Button ninth for McLaren in his 300th grand prix, and rookie Jolyon Palmer scored his first point of the season for Renault in tenth. The issue to trump all others from now until next week's Japanese Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton's terrible luck with engines. Power unit gremlins earlier this season helped drop the Brit to 43 points behind Rosberg after the Russian Grand Prix.
Mercedes C-Class Coupe due to go on sale next December
Sat, Dec 6 2014While we expect to see the coming Mercedes C-Class convertible sometime next year, perhaps at the Paris Motor Show, Auto Motor und Sport reports that the C-Class Coupe will go on sale in December 2015 (probably in Europe first) - it's possible we'll see it debuted at the same time as the cabrio. The German magazine says the two-door will have sharper lines on a body that is four inches longer, almost two inches wider and a fraction of an inch lower than the sedan, dimensional aggrandizement that will be put to good effect on the AMG version coming in 2016. We'll have to wait for information on powertrains, which should hew to the sedan's lineup in addition to whatever else M-B might bring over here, topped off by the 503-horsepower, twin-turbo V8 in the AMG variant. Speaking of which, the 'last-generation' C63 AMG Coupe is still on sale until spring of next year, if you're a fan of the classics. Or you can wait on news of the C-Class four-door coupe, if niches inside of niches are what you're really after.
