This fantastic SL550 was purchased in 2007 by
a dear friend of mine with about three thousand miles on it (Mercedes-Benz
factory rep car from new). Due to unforseen circumstances on her end, the
car came in to me as a trade last month. I don't usually deal in late model
sports and exotics, but my personal connection to the car from almost new
and knowing the level of care that this car has always seen made it easy
for me to help her out with a suitable replacement.
As you can tell from all of my photos, this
car did not lack for care and attention throughout its life - it spent very
few nights outside a very tight southeastern US garage and only then when
it was out on a long road trip up and down the east coast. It was almost
always dealer serviced apart from a couple sets of Michelins and a handful
of oil changes. Most recently, it received new motor mounts and a full brake
job at the Augusta, GA dealership - a complete file of service records detailing
all work comes with the car.
The car wears all of its original paint save
for a complete rear bumper respray when it was new and a complete front
bumper repair and respray just weeks ago in one of my restoration shops
- the bumper was removed, parking lot scrapes underneath (necessitating
the repair) were correctly fixed and the bumper refitted.
You only see flash glare here and below, no
damage, sorry for these glints of light.
All panel gaps are perfect as you would expect,
the convertible top and electronic open/close trunk lid works perfectly
as well.
You will note my PA dealer plate - yes, I reside
in Richmond, VA but have an arrangement with a PA dealer friend of mine
- as I do not need a dealer lot for the majority of my business I have a
license with him instead. See all the way at the bottom for the complete
explanation.
The inside of the trunk compartment is perfect,
the protective shelf keeps excess load from impeding the closing of the
trunk lid or convertible roof. The custom-made windshield sun shade is also
included with the car.
You can see the flaps for the tonneau cover
for when the top is open inside the deck lid.
As is becoming clear, this is not your average
SL550!
There are no door dings or other imperfections
in the bodywork, either. We just sent the car out for a full detailing inside
and out and it cleans up like a one-year-old car.
Now, let's do a walk-around with the top down!
The real lines of this car emerge with its fully
disappearing retractable hardtop.
The windscreen at the rear of the passenger
compartment folds down manually but is a great help at speed if you believe
a convertible should be driven top-down at all times (as long as weather
permits)!
Close-up of the windscreen.
Putting the top back up for a moment, note the
panoramic glass roof and the tinted back window, a great look.
From the inside with the sunshades pulled.
The beautiful view out if you just don't want
the wind in your hair that day!
The original Bi-Xenon headlamps are chip, fade
and fog free!
These have NOT been replaced!
All four original AMG 18" alloys are straight
with nearly new Michelin Z rated rubber - I just perfected the balance on
all four on a Hunter Road Force balancer. Note the new brake rotors and
pads all the way around done last year along with a full system fluid flush.
The right front rim has a small scuff on it
from a tire changer, but no curb rash.
Putting the top back down, let's take a serious
look inside...
The car's desirable options include the extra
wood trim, heated and cooled full power memory seats, BOSE audio with Mercedes-Benz
COMAND Navigation and much more - a great set of creature comforts.
The seats are perfect on both sides, a testament
to careful lady ownership!
In addition to heating and cooling, this switch
on both seats allows for adjustable bolstering, lumbar support and massage!
The dashboard and center console are perfect
with little to no fading to wood, leather and other materials.
Close-up here of the switchgear including the
AMG Active Body Control Sport button, the ride height button, mirror controls,
convertible top control, climate control and the Keyless Start button on
the shifter - you can but do not have to put the key in the ignition slot
- just leave it in your pocket.
Navigation and climate control on!
In the center armrest, the latest Mercedes Bluetooth
"puck" compatible with all current Android and iPhones, this integrates
with the COMAND system.
The steering wheel also has paddle shifters,
controls for audio, phone and the display on the instruments.
Present mileage as of today, mileage may go
up slightly during the listing at my discretion.
Close-up of the steering wheel, it's immaculate.
Just lovely in one side and out the other!
The original door jamb stickers are clearly
all present!
This factory CD changer is in the cubby behind
the driver's seat.
The owners manual (and the cover for the Bluetooth
adapter in the armrest!) are behind the passenger's seat.
The entire original owners packet is with the
car, complete with the original...
Window Sticker!
$109,185 new!
Both original keys just got new batteries.
This car also comes with this rare factory accessory
fitted luggage bag that fits over the "hump" and uses the retracting
straps in the rear panel. Really a neat piece!
Driver's door panel is just as nice as the passenger's
side!
The overhead console has the Homelink garage
door opener in the electrochromatic rear view mirror, dome lamps and the
microphone for the Bluetooth phone.
Under the hood, the immaculate engine compartment
with the gorgeous 5.5 litre V8 engine.
Both starting and main batteries were also replaced
recently, genuine MB, of course.
Truly a well-serviced car!

While physically located in Richmond, VA, this
automobile is being sold under the license of a Licensed Independent Used
Car Dealership in the State of Pennsylvania. There are many complications
in dealing with the sale of used automobiles, even special interest and
collector cars such as this phenomenal Mercedes-Benz. Through my affiliation
with International Motor Cars of Pittsburgh, Ltd. and my Salesman's license
on file therein, I am privileged to be able to offer cars such as this to
discerning enthusiasts. At the time of purchase, I will arrange for you
to complete your paperwork with Steve and Amanda by phone or in person in
Export, PA. Pennsylvania residents (apart from those in possession of a

otherwise. Accepted forms of payment include cash on pickup, cleared certified

charge is an additional $99 for title transfer, documents preparation and
Priority/Express Mail to you on receipt of payment. ***I will waive the
documents charge as an added bonus at the Buy it Now price.*** Pennsylvania
residents MUST pay sales tax to the dealership in addition to your purchase
price just as you would to the tag office or any other automobile dealer.
We do not charge tax to out of state (PA, not VA) buyers as this is something
you handle at the DMV or, naturally, other dealers in all 50 states.
Shipping arrangements are your responsibility
and must occur within fourteen days of auction close unless
cleared with me in advance of your bid. There will likewise be no exceptions
to this otherwise. I am happy to help if you have special needs and will
refer you to transporters I have used in the course of doing business if
you need help.
We reserve the right to sell this car at any
time during the week that this car is listed on eBay, cancel all bids and
close this listing as soon as payment is received in full as the car has
been marketed elsewhere. In the interest of fair trade I do not usually
do this, however, and will not once reserve has been met.

The Mercedes Unimog, the superhero villain of the off-road world that's just waiting to make the jump to Transformer, has been completely upgraded for its new generation. There are ten models, expanding the range and getting new designations across the traditional all-terrain series and the implement-carrier series. Panoramic cabins get more visibility, multifunction steering wheels and better dash clusters, improved HVAC and a three-mode central tire inflation system. Outside, there are new items like LED headlights and daytime running lamps in the bumper, roof-mounted windshield wipers and a front-camera monitor for the implement carrier.
The new engine lineup is compliant with Euro VI, featuring four- and six-cylinder BlueEfficiency engines putting out anywhere from 156 horsepower to 354 hp. Powerplant placement has also been tweaked, the chassis members getting a revised curve to place the engine a bit further back and lower, maintaining off-road clearance and lowering the Unimog's center of gravity. The new location of the engine means the cabin has more room, and the wheelbase is shorter. Combined with a higher turning angle, the Unimog has a smaller turning radius than before.
The implement carrier gets what's called a "synergistic traveling drive," the bonus being that drivers don't need to stop in order to use an attachment - a hydrostatic transmission works with the regular manual transmission at up to 31 kilometers per hour for seamless switching.

It wouldn't be a European auto show if we weren't teased with at least one mainstream vehicle we can't have here. At the Geneva Motor Show last week, the small but vocal contingent of shooting-brake buffs lamented that the Mazda6 wagon won't be coming to our shores, although they can take comfort in the fact that the vehicle won't get the torquey 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine we'll get here. Mercedes-Benz also announced a new headlight technology in Geneva that likely won't be available here anytime soon. It's just the latest in a long line of innovative and potentially lifesaving front-lighting solutions that the federal government doesn't allow in this country due to outdated standards — and a current lack of leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mercedes-Benz's new Digital Light system that debuted in Geneva uses a computer chip to activate more than a million micro-reflectors to better illuminate the road ahead. The Digital Light headlamps works with the vehicle's cameras, sensors and navigation mapping to adjust lighting for the given location and situation and to detect other road users. The Digital Light technology also serves as an extended head-up display of sorts by projecting symbols on the pavement ahead to alert drivers to, say, slippery conditions or pedestrians in the road. And it can even project lines on the road in a construction zone or through tight curves to show the driver the correct path. Digital Light will be available on Mercedes-Maybach vehicles later this year, although like any technology it's bound to trickle down to less expensive vehicles. That is, if we ever get it here in the U.S. Audi, a leader in automotive lighting, has repeatedly run into snags trying to bring state-of-the-art car headlights to the U.S. The German luxury automaker's recently introduced matrix laser headlight system, which performs many of the same trick as Mercedes-Benz's Digital Light, also isn't legal on U.S. roads. And five years after the introduction of its matrix-beam LED lighting, which illuminates more of the road without blinding oncoming motorists with brights by simultaneously operating high and low beams, Audi still can't bring that technology to the U.S. either.

The past few years have seen a surge of tech features in new vehicles — everything from cloud-based content to semi-autonomous driving. While some of it makes the driving experience better, not all tech is useful or well thought out. Automakers who are adept at drivetrains, ride quality and in-cabin comforts often fail at infotainment interfaces and connectivity. From testing dozens of vehicles each year and in the spirit of gratitude, here are three car tech features I'm thankful — and a trio I could live without. Thanks Connected search: This seems like a no-brainer since everyone already has it on their smartphones, but not all automakers include it in the dashboard and as part of their nav systems. The best ones, such as Toyota Entune, leverage a driver's connected device to search for a range of services and don't charge a subscription or require a separate data plan for the car. I also like how systems like Chrysler Uconnect use Yelp or other apps to find everything from coffee to gas stations and allow searching via voice recognition. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto: It took two of the largest tech companies to get in-dash infotainment right. While they have their disadvantages (you're forced to use Apple Maps with CarPlay, for example), the two smartphone-integration platforms make it easier and safer to use their respective native apps for phoning, messaging, music and more behind the wheel by transferring a familiar UI to the dashboard — with no subscription required. Heated seats and steering wheels: I really appreciate these simple but pleasant features come wintertime. It's easy to get spoiled by bun-warmers on frosty mornings and using a heated steering wheel to warm the cold hands. I recently tested a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E400 Coupe that also had heated armrest that added to a cozy luxury experience. Bonus points for brands like Buick that allow setting seat heaters to turn on when the engine is remotely started. No thanks Automaker infotainment systems: Automakers have probably poured millions into creating their own infotainment systems, with the result largely being frustration on the part of most car owners. And Apple CarPlay and Android Auto coming along to make them obsolete. While some automaker systems, such as Toyota Entune and FCA's Uconnect, are easy and intuitive to use, it seems that high-end systems (I'm looking at you BMW iDrive and Mercedes-Benz COMAND) are the most difficult.
