1994 Mercedes-benz Sl600 Base Convertible 2-door 6.0l on 2040-cars
Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, United States
This car is one of three I am auctioning from my collection. Please see (soon) my 1985 Ferrari Mondial and my custom built 1955 Jaguar convertible, once a four door Mark VII salon, if you are interested. I must sell two of the three as I need the garage space for new cars. This Mercedes is in superb condition, is my daily driver, and can be driven anywhere in comfort. Originally had a sticker price of $120,000. All records dating back to new are available. Great provenance if you want to show the car. Along those lines, I also have the original analog telephone which I removed from the center console to get space. The rest of the set is still installed in the dash. (See pictures) It has the few spider cracks in hood paint mentioned earlier, has a noisy passenger window when going up, and the radio does not receive AM well. Other than that, everything is fine so far as I know. Four correct tires were new last year and four wheel alignment was done. This year it got a new radiator (had a slight leak), a new air conditioning compressor, and new fuel and A/C lines. Everything works well. It has the factory installed sub woofer and amplifier system behind the seats and a 10 CD changer. (See pictures) The soft top (like new) is lined and hides under a hard boot, fully automatic. Rear window is perfect. There is also a pop-up roll bar and a wind deflecting screen behind the passengers. Good condition authentic Mercedes floor mats. Headlight wipers. And something I have always found interesting - the cam operated single windshield wiper which only Mercedes would dream up. I would recommend you have your mechanic verify the car for your peace of mind; but it has always been serviced by a local certified Mercedes mechanic who will vouch for the car and possibly take a call from the serious buyer. Always garaged, never wrecked, never smoked in, the car is comfortable, sleek, and fast when you want it to be. If it is important to you, and if the driver does not "horse" the car, it will get near 21 mpg on the road. Please note that the car comes with the orignal owners manual (somewhat worn), other owner info and substantial literature about it. (See pictures) All keys included. Also included is the rolling floor support for the hard top as well as the ceiling hoist if you want it. This is a V12 at its best. It doesn't grind when you start it but "spools". Very smooth and quiet running, a true luxury sports car with timeless design. Will surely go another 129,000 miles. I have more pictures if necessary. Thank you.

Mercedes chief invites Audi, BMW to compete in F1
Thu, Dec 4 2014Mercedes-Benz didn't just win the Formula One World Championship in 2014 – it positively dominated it. The team won all but three of the grands prix this season, scoring a one-two finish at more than half of them and landing at least one car on the podium at every race without exception. It goes without saying, then, that the German automaker thrives on competition, but now it's welcoming even more. Speaking with Germany's Sport Bild at its homecoming celebration in Stuttgart, Daimler chief Dieter Zetsche welcomed Mercedes' biggest rivals Audi and BMW to join it on the F1 grid. Noting that the three German brands share some 80 percent of the market for luxury automobiles, Zetsche said that F1 would make a natural arena of competition for Mercedes, Audi and BMW to fight for top bragging rights. The three currently compete against each other in front of home audiences in the DTM touring car series – effectively Germany's equivalent to NASCAR – but of the ten races held this year, the majority were in Germany itself, and all of them took place in Europe. BMW last competed in F1 when it bought the Sauber team in 2006, but withdrew from the series in 2009. Despite its progenitor Auto Union having fielded the famous Silver Arrows in pre-war grand prix racing, Audi has never been a player in modern F1 racing, though recent rumors have linked it to a potential foray – spurred by the arrival of sister-company Porsche on its home turf at Le Mans, the departure of several of its key endurance drivers and the hiring of former Scuderia Ferrari chief Stefano Domenicali. Porsche had similarly considered an F1 program before getting the go-ahead to compete with Audi at Le Mans. As for the prospect of Mercedes competing in other international racing series, Zetsche added that year-long preparations for 24 hours of racing at Le Mans didn't present a good cost-benefit ratio in his estimation, but that Formula E (where Audi currently supports a quasi-works entry) would be worth a closer look.
Recharge Wrap-up: BMW i3 goes against Mercedes B-Class ED, Tesla good for business
Wed, Sep 17 2014Car and Driver has published a comparison test pitting the 2014 BMW i3 against the 2014 Mercedes-Benz B-class Electric Drive. The test not only measured the quality of the driving experience, but also all the quantitative details that are especially important when looking at electric vehicles. For instance, the Benz's real-world MPGe surpassed its own rating, but it still couldn't match the BMW. The B-Class, though, won in the range department. We won't spoil all the results, or Car and Driver's overall pick, but you can head over to the article to find out for yourself. Tesla's expanding business, including the Gigafactory being built in Reno, NV, is encouraging growth in the locales and associated businesses. Some of Tesla's suppliers are talking of relocation, wanting to be close to the action stirred up by the electric automaker's expansion. It makes good business sense to be in the same neighborhood as Tesla. "We can react quickly, and our engineers are constantly working with Tesla," says Futuris General Manager Sam Coughlin. Brookings Institute fellow Jennifer Vey says, "The land around Tesla is being redeveloped and reimagined. It's a mash-up of an anchor campus, startups, housing and transit, in a physically compact area where companies can cluster and connect." Read more at San Jose Mercury News. EVs are doing even more to reduce energy use clean up the air, according to new analysis from the Union of Concerned Scientists. According to findings, 60 percent of Americans now live in areas where EVs do more to reduce emissions than hybrids, up from 45 percent in 2012. Average electricity use is now 0.325 kWh per mile, down five percent from 2011. EV performance - in terms of mileage and emissions - is improving compared to traditional fuel vehicles, based on the sources of electricity in various regions. Zipcar is expanding across Europe, and has already established itself in Austria, Spain and the UK. According to Zipcar France's General Manager Etienne Hermite, "In a highly populated city, Zipcar's model has been proven to remove up to 15 personally owned vehicles from the road for each Zipcar in service, reducing parking demand, congestion and emissions." Zipcar European President Massimo Marsili hopes that most Parisians will eventually be just a short walk from a Zipcar.
