1992 Mercedes 500sl Beautiful Condition, Perfect Color Combo, Wow! on 2040-cars
Palm Beach, Florida, United States
Here is a great chance to buy a well maintained 1992 500SL. These cars are becoming harder and harder to find in good condition because people don't want to spend the money to fix them properly. The R129 SL built from 1990-2002 is by far the best built and most usuable, comfortable and safe SL ever built. Unlike the wonderful R107 SL which it replaced, the R129 is modern and fresh and can be used as an everyday driver, not just a toy like the R107. The seats are very comfortable and incoporate the seatbelts into the seat. In the unlikely event of a rollever an rollbar automatically deploys if it detects a wheel that has left the pavement, making this car very safe, and in a rollover, a survivable accident. The rollbar can be electrically raised as well. The best feature about the R129 is that it was the first Mercedes SL to have an automatic top. The previous R107 was manual and people rarely bothered to put them down because of this. The R129 is well insulated and at highway speeds is still quiet. Every R129 SL has 10 hydraulic cylinders that work the top and one that works the Rollbar. Hydraulics at somepoint in their lifespan will leak. And they all do and then need to be rebuilt or replaced. The parts alone are around $3500 plus labor. Everyone of the cylinders has been professionally rebuilt with new seals and the entire hyraulic system flushed with new fluid. So the top works flawlessly and you can expect many years of use from this top with no problems. Another weakness on R129 SL's are plastic trim pieces that break, as in rearview mirrors which are electric and dome lights and they can cost a fortune. Hence people letting these cars deteriorate and eventually junked. The 500SL is the most reliable of all the R129. It has a reliable 4 spd automatic transmission. The 300SL 6 cyl cars came with a 5spd manual or 5spd automatic and the automatics were extremely unlreliable and difficult to rebuild or even at this point to find a replacement. They were also prone to expensive headgasket leaks. The 600SL was a complete overkill. Beautifully crafted on the interior with leather on every surface, but cursed with a adaptive suspension which lowered or raised the car depending on speed. Usually failing and ripping the front bumper when parked. All Mercedes built between 1993-to early 1996 have wiring harness problems, and must be checked or you will be in for a devasting repair bill. When it comes to a R129 its best to do your research or you can have a car that can go from love to hate quickly. This car has a beautiful interior with soft leather, a VDO CD radio and and aux imput for plugging it in to your phone for music. The car has four brand new tires and is ready to go anywhere. Please keep in mind this car is 22 years old. It is not new do not expect a car at this price to be new. I have tried to describe it as accurately as possible, I encourage anyone to come and test drive and you will instantly fall in love. Please call Michael with any further questions. Formula 1 seeking independent engine supplier
Mon, Oct 26 2015Formula 1 could get a new engine supplier in the near future, if Bernie Ecclestone and the independent teams gets their way. According to Autosport, the FIA is soon to open the contract up for bids, and there are already several manufacturers that have expressed interest. Currently Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault, and Honda supply engines – both to their own premier teams (Red Bull and McLaren for the latter two) but also to other teams like Williams, Sauber, and Toro Rosso. Because the new turbocharged V6 hybrid power units cost those four suppliers so much to develop, they're charging their customer teams big bucks – around $20-30 million per season – to provide the engines. These costs are much higher than the $10 million or so it used to cost to purchase a V8 engine under the previous regulations. Ecclestone figures it's time to bring in another supplier who will not run their own team and not play favorites, but will supply engines to private teams at a lower cost. There are already a number of potential suppliers under consideration. One of them is said to be Cosworth, which has a long history in the series stretching back to 1963. The British firm stepped back between 2007 and 2009, returned in 2010, and dropped out again after 2013. The development could be of particular benefit to Red Bull, which has been unable to find an engine supplier and could be forced out of the series as a result. The team has long been powered by Renault, but that relationship has grown sour. And the other three engine manufacturers have not been forthcoming in offering an alternative arrangement for the team. Mercedes FWD platform to last until 2018, convertible and two-seater future uncertain
Mon, 22 Jul 2013Mercedes-Benz seems to be expecting a lot of success from its front-wheel-drive CLA-Class. Automotive News is reporting that the sub-C-Class sedan could grow when its second generation arrives in 2018.
The current FWD platform for MB underpins the CLA, the B-Class, the GLA-Class, and the A-Class. The B-Class will arrive in North America as an EV for spring of 2014, while the production GLA crossover will arrive three to four months after that. The five-door A-Class won't be crossing The Pond. Sad faces all around.
According to AN, another model will be based on the front-drive architecture, but it won't be coming to the US market. Set to arrive next year, rumors are that it'll be a wagon version of the CLA, sort of like the ill-named five-door CLS Shooting Brake that is also a Europe-only item.
Mercedes rules out hybrid supercar, promises SLS successor
Sat, 16 Mar 2013The recent Geneva Motor Show was a festival of hypercars, with the presence of not one, but three over-the-top debuts: the Lamborghini Veneno, McLaren P1 and Ferrari LeFerrari. The latter two have hitched their carbon fiber bumpers to the electrification bandwagon by using hybrid-electric powertrains not entirely unlike the propulsion systems we've come to know in cars like the Toyota Prius and Chevrolet Volt. Does that mean the flow of electrons up the four-wheeled food chain will eventually consume our hallowed supercars? Not if AMG has anything to say about it.
AMG Director of Vehicle Development Tobias Moers recently confirmed that not only will there be a successor to the Mercedes-Benz performance division's SLS AMG, he notes that its internal combustion engine will most definitely not be sharing living quarters with an electric drivetrain. Instead, AMG plans to focus on further pushing the power and efficiency envelope of the internal combustion engine and advancing the use of lightweight materials to achieve their goals. The first example of this effort can be seen in the new SLS AMG Black Series that incorporates many weight-saving techniques to shed some 154 pounds from the SLS AMG GT (above), which itself is lighter than the standard SLS AMG.
Furthermore, Moers remarks that his company is happy to leave the hypercar segment to companies like Ferrari and McLaren. He admits that, "Ferrari in the hyper-car segment is still a different brand than AMG. We have to be honest..." So rather than taking the SLS further upmarket to do battle with bulls and stallions, Moers hinted that the next-generation SLS may be joined by another performance model that fits neatly between itself and the C63 AMG.
