1986 Mercedes 560sl R107 Removable Hardtop Convertible on 2040-cars
Rockwall, Texas, United States
The 560SL offered here is the finest you are likely to find anywhere. Always garaged and lovingly maintained, it is in the highly desirable Artic White exterior with blue leather interior. It has the original removable hardtop and the original like-new dark blue soft top with a clear window. The paint is all original and shines like a new car. The carpet is original and it and the floor mats are as new. The seat covers are brand new German leather with new horsehair pads so the interior looks, rides and smells almost like it did when it left the showroom. The engine, transmission and other systems all work perfectly. The clock keeps perfect time. A/C is cold. With a new exhaust system and low mileage Michelin tires it rides and sounds great. It has 81,XXX documented miles. Over its 28 year life that’s an average of less than 2900 miles per year. It has the original first aid kit and tool roll. There has never been a speck of rust on the car.
The car runs, accelerates and cruises like new. It's fun to drive and is fast and comfortable. It has a driver’s side air bag and is a safe classic car. It is a very rigid convertible of considerable heft.
It’s not perfect. No unrestored car of this era could be. If it somehow was it would be much more expensive. There are a few very minor paint chips on the trailing edges of the doors and very few touched up chips elsewhere which take a very close examination to find. Overall the paint looks amazing.
The German engineering on this car is superb. Mercedes had 19 years to perfect this series of cars but as with all machines there are points that fail over a long period of time. These areas have been addressed on this car. I have owned this car for 8 years and it was a very good one when I bought it. It's much better now. I have invested a lot to prevent problems and correct failures when they occur and you can benefit from that. I'm simply ready to buy another classic Mercedes and enjoy it.
The front calipers have been replaced. The cruise control is almost a guaranteed failure point on these cars after 20-25 years. This one has had a professional repair and works perfectly. The AC compressor, the blower motor and the starter have been replaced. All mechanical replacements (except exhaust) have been done with OEM parts. Hardtop to window rubber was replaced and finally the leather seats have been replaced with beautiful supple leather that is exactly like the original. This beautiful classic will serve you faithfully for many more decades. I think you’ll find it to be a very, very good driver or candidate for an easy restoration to perfect condition.
Includes a car cover, hoist, cart and cover for the hardtop, a value of over $600. These allow one person removal of the hard top as well as safe, convenient and dust free storage. |

Our love of SUVs is killing people in the streets
Tue, Jul 17 2018Americans are fond of supersized fast-food meals and colossal convenience-store fountain drinks, even though they're clearly bad for our health and U.S. adults keep getting fatter. We also like large vehicles, and our love affair with SUVs is killing people in the streets. According to a recent investigation by the Detroit Free Press/USA Today, the increase in SUV sales over the past several years coincides with a sharp rise in pedestrian deaths in the U.S. — up 46 percent since 2009, with nearly 6,000 people killed in 2016 alone. With SUV sales surpassing sedans in 2014 and pickups and SUVs currently accounting for 60 percent of new vehicle sales, it's no wonder Ford announced in April plans to cease U.S. sales of almost all passenger cars. And this followed Fiat Chrysler's move to virtually an all-truck, -SUV and -crossover lineup. While the Freep/USA Today investigation found that the simultaneous surge in SUV sales and pedestrian deaths comes down to vehicle size, it also points to a lack of action on the part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), even though it knew of the dangers SUVs pose to pedestrians. Also blamed are automakers dragging their feet on implementing active safety features. Using federal accident data, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) determined that there was an 81 percent increase in single-vehicle pedestrian fatalities involving SUVs between 2009 and 2016. Freep/USA Today's analysis of the same data by counting vehicles that struck and killed pedestrians instead of the number of people killed showed a 69 percent increase in SUV involvement. As far back as 2001, researchers at Rowan University forecasted a rise in pedestrian deaths as Americans began switching to SUVs. "In the United States, passenger vehicles are shifting from a fleet populated primarily by cars to a fleet dominated by light trucks and vans," the researchers wrote, with light trucks comprising SUVs.
Smart Cross Connect app changes how ForTwos get used [UPDATE]
Tue, Oct 27 2015UPDATE: The story's been updated with a response from a Smart representative. There are parking spaces, and then there are Fortwo parking spaces. Smart, which is owned by Mercedes-Benz parent Daimler, is looking for a way for its customers to take advantage of the difference. Think of it as a big thing for really small cars. Smart is working on an app for the redesigned Fortwo called Cross Connect that will be available as soon as next month, says Automotive News, citing Smart chief Annette Winkler. The idea is to connect owners of the diminutive two-seat vehicles to, for example, let them tell each other when there's a parking space that's too small for just about any other vehicle but big enough for a Smart. If you think that's a small thing, think again. The Fortwo is 8 feet, 10 inches long. That's almost six feet shorter than a Toyota Prius, which itself isn't exactly a stretch limo. In fact, the length of a Smart Fortwo is just 10 inches longer than the width of a Ford F-150, in case anyone was having misgivings about parking perpendicular in a parallel spot. Parking has become more relevant, and tougher, as more people move to urban centers. For instance, BMW said earlier this month that it would discontinue its DriveNow car-sharing operations in San Francisco because of the challenge of parking vehicles on that city's streets. Other possible amenities with the Cross Connect app including the enabling of personal car sharing as well as information on car washes that offer discounted rates for Smart Fortwo. Yes, there are some out there, apparently, and we salute them. Michael Minielly, a spokesman for Mercedes-Benz, confirmed to Autoblog that the Cross Connect features would be available in November. Rosberg survives the Mexican mess | 2016 Mexican Grand Prix recap
Mon, Oct 31 2016Roughly ten messy laps defined the Mexican Grand Prix – five laps at the start and five at the end. Those laps included a couple of actual wrecks and a few more near wrecks that turned the entire day into chaos. To have any chance of winning the 2016 Driver's Championship, Lewis Hamilton needed to get his Mercedes-AMG Petronas across the finish line ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg. Once again we got a weekend full of vintage Hamilton, the Brit dominating the from Friday to Sunday, except for the first corner of the first lap. Pole-sitter Hamilton reached Turn 1 clearly in front of the field. But he couldn't make the corner and stay on track, so he zipped into the runoff area and over the grass, rejoining at Turn 3 still ahead of the field. The stewards didn't penalize Hamilton, one commentator's explanation being that Hamilton "was not battling another car." The non-action left car #44 to enjoy a lights-to-flag win. At that very same corner, Rosberg also availed himself of the runoff area. His infraction seemed destined to incur a penalty until replays showed that Max Verstappen in the Red Bull slid wide and bumped Rosberg, causing the German to go off track. No penalties were handed out there, either. Verstappen would return to hound Rosberg later in the race when angling for second place. Verstappen took a stab through Turn 4 on Lap 50 of the 71-lap race, but ran off the track and lost touch with the Mercedes by Lap 55. Ferrari got half of its strategy right in Mexico, putting Sebastian Vettel hard on the charge in the final stint. The German got within DRS range of Verstappen on Lap 67, with Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo a little more than a second behind Vettel. On Lap 68, Verstappen pulled the same move as Hamilton at the beginning of the race: the Dutchman ran wide through Turn 1, zoomed over the grass and rejoined the track at Turn 3, staying ahead of Vettel the whole time. With three laps remaining, the stewards chose to investigate after the race. In spite of Verstappen's own team telling he probably needed to cede position to Vettel, Verstappen stayed in front and slowed just enough to put Vettel under threat from Ricciardo. On Lap 70 Ricciardo had closed up to Vettel's gearbox. Headed for Turn 4, Vettel swung outside to take the corner. When Ricciardo moved inside to pass, Vettel moved inside to block the Aussie while both cars were in the braking zone. The Ferrari made light contact with the Red Bull, but Vettel held his position through Turn 5.
