This is a 1986, but listed as 1980 in one description due to European VIN.

1986 Mercedes 500SL Roadster. 2 Tops. Cabernet Exterior with Palomino Leather Interior and Black Soft Top. Rare European Model seldom seen in the US. This unique R107 look combines the nicer small bumpers from the pre-1974 and/or European Models, European Lighting along with the more modern attributes like the 15" Alloy Wheels and Front Air Dam.

I have owned this vehicle for just over three years. The car has been in the US since 1986. To the best of my knowledge, there were 2 previous owners; one from 1986 through August of 2007, and the second from August 2007 until May 2010. Most of the documentation I have (Service Booklet, Mercedes-Benz VMI, Oil Change Stickers) indicate that the car has been Dealer Serviced. The drive belts and hoses are also Mercedes-Benz.

Although this vehicle is quite similar to a US Spec 560SL, the key points of differentiation are:

1) Higher Output 5.0L Engine which I believe is rated at 240HP versus 227HP on the 560SL.
2) No Air Bag.
3) Climate Controls are different and include a separate driver and passenger setting.
4) It has a Becker Grand Prix Stereo, but it is somewhat different than the US Models.
5) Manual Retracting Antenna.
6) Sport/Economy Setting on the Automatic Transmission.
7) Simpler Sun-Visors without Lighted Vanity Mirrors.
8) Battery is in Engine Compartment versus the trunk on 560SL.
9) Rear Spoiler on Decklid/No 3rd Brake Light.
10) Vacuum Adjustable European Headlights/Amber Tips on Taillights.
11) Different Exhaust System.
12) Small European Style Bumpers

Mechanical Issues & Highlights-as referenced above, there is an occasional Timing Chain Rattle upon cold start, but the Engine is quite at all other times. The Air Conditioning is not working. My mechanic found a leak in the Condensor when the system was charged up, so I can not say if the issues are limited to the condensor or are more involved. The Cruise Control is not working. One of the front ABS Sensors is faulty so the ABS light comes on often when the brakes are applied. Lastly, the wiper fluid light remains on, but the system is functioning. Recent services and upgrades include New Michelin MXV Energy Tires in 2011 or less than 1,000 miles ago. New MB Battery 8-13. New Spark Plugs 8-13. Oil Change 8-13. New Timing Chain Tensioner 5-13. Fuel filter 5-11. Shifter Bushings 7-11. New Hood Insulation Pad 5-12. The Exhaust is original except for where the Catalytic Converter was added. There is some light seepage as shown, but no major fluid leaks.

Exterior Issues & Highlights-Overall, the paint is extremely nice. There is one small spot of surface rust on the lower rear corner of the drivers door. There are a couple if touched up scratches on the door edge, and one or two stone chips touched up on the hood. The Chrome is great. The glass is nice and original. The Rubber Mouldings & Trim are well preserved and not dried out. The soft top is original and in good condition. The left soft top window has one slight perforation as shown. The Hard Top is also very good.

Interior Issues & Highlights-The Leather is presentable, but the seats were re-dyed at some point. There are no areas with excessive wear, but light cracks are visible on the surface. The Door Panels, Carpeting, Rear Interior Panels etc are very good. The wood trim is very good, but there are superficial cracks on the shift surround. The dash is quite good. There is one small crack by the right defrost vent heading towards the windshield and another at the instrument cluster up-turn, but these are barely visible as seen in the image. The Left sunvisor is deteriorated, but the right side is fine.

Other original attributes include the Owners Manual Kit including a German and English Owners Manual, First Aid Kit, Tool Kit, and a Factory or Dealer Installed Mercedes-Benz Radar Detector.

The vehicle is sold as is where is.

International bidders are welcome.

Many more pic's available upon request.

Dealers mobilize to protect their margins from automaker subscription services

Fri, Aug 24 2018

Six individual auto brands — Lincoln, Cadillac, Porsche, Mercedes, BMW and Volvo — have established or are trialing a vehicle subscription service in the U.S. Three third-party companies — Flexdrive, Clutch and Carma — run brand-agnostic subscription services. And three automakers — Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and General Motors — have also launched short-term rental services. Dealers, afraid of how these trends might affect their margins, are building political and lawmaking campaigns to protect their revenue streams. So far, three states are investigating automaker subscriptions, and Indiana has banned any such service until next year. It's certain that those three states are the first fronts in a long political and legal battle. Powerful dealer franchise laws mandate the existence of dealers and restrict how automakers are allowed to interact with customers to sell a vehicle. On top of that, Bob Reisner, CEO of Nassau Business Funding & Services, said, "Dealers and their associations are among the strongest political operators in many states. They as a group are difficult for state politicians to vote against." In California earlier this year, the state Assembly debated a bill with wide-ranging provisions to protect against what the California New Car Dealers Association called "inappropriate treatment of dealers by manufacturers." One of those provisions stipulated that subscription services need to go through dealers, but that item got stripped out when dealers and manufacturers agreed to discuss the matter further. In Indiana, Gov. Eric Holcomb signed a moratorium on all subscription programs by dealers or manufacturers until May 1, 2019, to give legislators more time to investigate. Dealers in New Jersey have taken their campaign to the state capitol, asking that the cars in subscription programs get a different classification for registration purposes. Automakers run the current subscription services and own the vehicles. Sign-ups and financial transactions happen online or through apps, leaving dealers to do little more than act as fulfillment centers to various degrees, with little legal recourse as to compensation amounts when they're called on to deliver or service a car. That's a bad base to build on for business owners who've sunk millions of dollars into their operations.

New Mercedes E-Class nearly exposed, may be Maybach

Mon, Sep 14 2015

The all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class is marching closer and closer to production, with a new round of spy photos giving us our best look yet at the S-Class-inspired looks of the German brand's executive luxury car. There really is very little camouflage this time around – what's there looks more like the kind of plastic wrapping you'd see on a freshly imported vehicle at the port. In front, we can see the new E will wear similar LED accents to the S- and C-Class. The E-Class' big and little brothers also inspired the tail of the new model, where we can see slightly disguised, vertically oriented LED taillights. Prominent, enclosed exhausts are very similar to what we saw in our spy shots of the Mercedes-Maybach E-Class. Aside from the exhausts, this particular car also wears the same blingy wheels as the range-topping tester we spied last August. The thick-rimmed, multi-spoke design isn't the only giveaway to this car's luxurious intentions, though. Our last Maybach sighting showed a car completely covered in camo, making it difficult to tell just how large the rear doors are relative to the car we're seeing today. Instead of the doors, though, we suggest you look at the windows. Like the August spy photos, this prototype features tinted rear glass, which could perhaps indicate that we're looking at yet another example the second Mercedes-Maybach model. So is this yet another Maybach E-Class? We're leaning towards yes. The size of the back doors – and the rear quarter window, in particular – is close enough to what we saw last month, and the presence of tinted glass, the same exhausts, and the same wheels can't be discounted either.

Mercedes was set to sell version of Nissan Titan, now Infiniti might instead

Wed, 18 Sep 2013

Mercedes-Benz Titan. Mercedes-Benz Frontier. Mercedes-Benz pickup truck. None of these things roll off the tongue particularly well. We'd like to think that's the reason Daimler opted to kill the idea of rebadged Titan and Frontier pickups from corporate ally Nissan. In reality, the execution before the Frankfurt Motor Show was due to more complicated issues.
Yes, Mercedes, byword for German luxury, style and quality, would have slapped a three-pointed star on a pair of Japanese pickup trucks that have failed to resonate with consumers in the world's largest truck market. That slapping of badges isn't much of an exaggeration, at least on the outside. According to the report from Road & Track, the truck's front clip would have been tweaked, but beyond that, the sheetmetal would have been unchanged. The interior would have received a more thorough going-over by the team at Mercedes, while the suspension and noise, vibration and harshness tuning would have also received significant attention.
The trucks would have ended up being sold through the light-commercial branch of Mercedes-Benz - the same folks that will happily sell you a Sprinter van - had the deal gone through. Issues arose, though, first with the engines. Mercedes wanted a wider range of powertrains to allow it to tune models for specific markets, while Nissan said it couldn't engineer the wide variety of engines that MB wanted to drop under the hood. For the smaller truck, meanwhile, MB was interested in a hybrid or plug-in variant, according to R&T, although this was also shot down by Nissan.
