New leather seat covers, new carpet and new soft top have already been purchased and go with the vehicle."

For sale is a 1985 Mercedes 280 SL in need of cosmetic restoration. The car is numbers matching and stock. The car has been restored mechanically and is ready for the cosmetics. Most of the expensive interior items have already been purchased and go with the vehicle. I have a clear Texas title in hand. Ebay does not allow a European VIN number. The correct VIN for this vehicle is WDB1070421A005029.

The 280SL's were European versions of the 380 SL's that were imported into the US. The main difference was the drive train, headlights and the bumpers. This car has a 6 cylinder engine with a automatic transmission. The headlights are a single square headlight in each side instead of 2 round lights. The bumpers are extended about 2 inches. This car runs strong and gets decent mileage.

The car runs good and shifts fine. The car is box stock except for the stereo and usual maintence items. I have replaced the tires, shocks, drag link and the brakes. The car's engine developed a problem of just stopping like it was out of gas. The entire fuel system from the filter in the gas tank to the fuel injection distributor have been replaced or rebuilt at the cost of approx. $1,000, then we found out it had only a bad coil which was replaced for $65. The body is in great shape except the paint. There are no dents or dings on the body and no rust on the body. The underside is factory undercoated and is also rust free. The paint is faded. The leather seat covers are old and cracked and the carpet was faded. The car comes with a removable hardtop and a soft top. The soft top needs replacing. I have already purchased exact replacements for the leather seat covers, carpet, soft top and dashboard cover for approx. $2,000 and it will all go with the vehicle. The wood trim console will need to be replaced for about $250. I have already removed the carpet and the passenger seat and there is no rust on the floors of the vehicle. Everything on the car works except for the air conditioning and the odometer. The speedometer works fine but the odometer doesn't. This is a common problem on older Mercedes. The odometer shows 127K miles but the car may have 128K on it. The AC needs re-charging. The power steering, power brakes, cruise control, gauges and lights work properly. The car has factory wire wheels that will need to be cleaned properly.

The preparation for paint will be easy due to the condition of the body. The 280 SL's are high dollar cars when restored and this one is ready for the final steps. In return for an airline ticket back to DFW, I will bring the car to the new owner. If you have any questions, please ask. Thanks for looking.

This or That: Mercedes S-Class 350SD vs. 2003 Jaguar XJR [w/poll]

Thu, Mar 26 2015

Budget. It's a wretched word, whether you're going out to eat, shipping for a new outfit or, more relevant to today's discussion, buying a car. Massive marketing machines have convinced us, as a population, to buy the best you can afford, repercussions be damned – If you've saved up some money, spend it! All of it, on whatever it is that currently sits atop your personal Amazon wishlist, be it a Timex that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', a $17,000 Gold Apple Watch or a $60,000 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. But what if the best you can afford is... say, $12,815? For that price, you can buy a brand-new 2015 Nissan Versa (including destination), assuming you're happy with zero options and a manual transmission. For that price, you'll get standard air conditioning, a CD player and... well, a warranty. Pretty sensible choice, Captain Frugal. But also ridiculously uninspired. And so that brings us to today's edition of This or That, in which two Autoblog editors pick differing sides of an argument and duke it out to see which one of us can convince you, dear reader, is better. Or at least less wrong. You be the judge. As a refresher, I'm two-and-two on these challenges, having lost the first and second editions before storming back in rounds three and four. Today, as alluded to above, we decided to throw our collective brainpower (oh lord, what have we done?) at what may be the single most difficult question currently confounding the best minds our planet has to offer: What is the best used used luxury car you can buy for the price of a 2015 Nissan Versa? Shall we meet our contenders? Allow me to introduce you to the most perfect luxury car money can buy (assuming the amount of money you're holding is equal to the amount of the cheapest new car currently sold in America, the Nissan Versa). My pick is the 1991 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Not just any S-Class, but the legendary W126, which was produced between 1979 and 1992. And not just any W126, either, but one powered by a 3.5-liter turbodiesel engine. And with that, I send the argument to my esteemed colleague, Associate Editor Chris Bruce. Bruce: Jeremy, we had over $12,000 to budget for this challenge, and the best you can manage is a 24-year-old diesel Mercedes? I love oil-burners as much as any other auto writer with their mountains of torque and huge cruising range, but you're making this too easy on me. Also, you're really choosing a brown, diesel, German luxury sedan?

Our love of SUVs is killing people in the streets

Tue, Jul 17 2018

Americans are fond of supersized fast-food meals and colossal convenience-store fountain drinks, even though they're clearly bad for our health and U.S. adults keep getting fatter. We also like large vehicles, and our love affair with SUVs is killing people in the streets. According to a recent investigation by the Detroit Free Press/USA Today, the increase in SUV sales over the past several years coincides with a sharp rise in pedestrian deaths in the U.S. — up 46 percent since 2009, with nearly 6,000 people killed in 2016 alone. With SUV sales surpassing sedans in 2014 and pickups and SUVs currently accounting for 60 percent of new vehicle sales, it's no wonder Ford announced in April plans to cease U.S. sales of almost all passenger cars. And this followed Fiat Chrysler's move to virtually an all-truck, -SUV and -crossover lineup. While the Freep/USA Today investigation found that the simultaneous surge in SUV sales and pedestrian deaths comes down to vehicle size, it also points to a lack of action on the part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), even though it knew of the dangers SUVs pose to pedestrians. Also blamed are automakers dragging their feet on implementing active safety features. Using federal accident data, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) determined that there was an 81 percent increase in single-vehicle pedestrian fatalities involving SUVs between 2009 and 2016. Freep/USA Today's analysis of the same data by counting vehicles that struck and killed pedestrians instead of the number of people killed showed a 69 percent increase in SUV involvement. As far back as 2001, researchers at Rowan University forecasted a rise in pedestrian deaths as Americans began switching to SUVs. "In the United States, passenger vehicles are shifting from a fleet populated primarily by cars to a fleet dominated by light trucks and vans," the researchers wrote, with light trucks comprising SUVs.

Mercedes-Benz GLA Concept gets mobbed in China

Sat, 20 Apr 2013

If the reception it received at the Shanghai Motor Show is any judge of marketplace acceptance, Mercedes-Benz has a hit on its hands in the form of the GLA Concept. And we can understand why - we're quickly becoming fans of Mercedes' recent styling language, as defined by new models like the CLA and this GLA Concept.
The big news on the exterior front are the headlamp clusters, which have frickin' laser beams attached to their foreheads embedded inside that are capable of projecting videos and images on a screen. Plus, a pair of video cameras are mounted on the roof that can be used to capture driving excitement or removed and taken with you. How cool is that? We just hope they have a substantial locking mechanism to prevent would-be thievery...
If the exterior is mostly ready for production, with a few of the more outlandish elements moved to the trash bin - like, for instance, laser-beam headlamps and removable action cams - the interior is a true custom job that screams concept loud and clear. There are all kinds of jewel-like finishes inside, along with transparent surfaces showing what looks like metal latticework underneath and some awfully thick looking leather with massive exterior stitching done by hand similar to what you'd find on a baseball glove.
