See the Tesla Model S with Firmware 6.0 in action in new videos from Teslarati. The large software update includes improved traffic-based navigation, a calendar function, updated power management, "Location-Based Smart Air Suspension" as well as other improvements. Drivers get more route options to save energy, and more control over how the car saves energy. The car can also remember ride height settings when driving in those same locations again. Additionally, you can start and drive the car without a key, just using the smartphone app. See how it all works in the videos below, the second of which focuses on pairing with the updated phone app. The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has deemed ride-hailing app Uber's carpooling service illegal. The way the UberPool service is categorized by the CPUC, charging multiple riders separate fares for a single ride runs afoul of the law. The technical details are a bit convoluted, and what supporters could deem arbitrary, but Forbes delves into the details a bit further to try to make sense of California's intentions (even considering the possibility of other ride services, such as airport shuttle companies, fueling the fire). After the Politburo member was named vice premier, he encouraged maintaining and increasing EV subsidies when China sought to decrease them. Mercedes-Benz begins deliveries of the S500 Plug-In Hybrid this month. The high-tech luxury PHEV features energy saving modes based on driver, route and traffic, and features a haptic accelerator that can signal when the driver should ease off to save power. It's powered by a biturbocharged V6 and 85-kW electric motor. Its 8.7-kWh battery offers about 20 miles of electric driving. The S500 plug-in starts at about $146,000. Race Recap: 2013 Japanese Grand Prix flips several scripts [spoilers]

Japan's Suzuka circuit is a great track that all the drivers love, but it doesn't usually provide the most thrilling, head-to-head racing. Where it does excel, however, is with surprises and "What just happened there?!" moments, and this year it was no different.
It started with Mark Webber in his Infiniti Red Bull Racing out-qualifying his teammate Sebastian Vettel for the first time this year. They were followed closely by Lewis Hamilton in the first Mercedes-AMG Petronas, the still-solid Romain Grosjean again outdoing teammate Kimi Räikkönen, Felipe Massa racing for another seat in Formula One and putting his Ferrari in fifth, then Nico Rosberg in the second Mercedes, Nico Hülkenberg in the first Sauber, Fernando Alonso in the second Ferrari, and Räikkönen continuing to do himself no favors by qualifying tenth.
For the second year in a row, the lights going out was the cue to start the first corner action...

Mercedes GLE63 AMG Coupe teased

The very concept of the luxury crossover coupe often gets flamed for being not only ugly, but also impractical. However, after years of letting BMW blaze the trail with the X6, Mercedes-Benz recently entered the field with the GLE-Class Coupe. Now, it's time to add a little more pepper to the package with the newly teased GLE63 AMG Coupe. The video above gives a solid look at the three-quarters perspective of this high-performance high-rider. Compared to the standard version buyers get a different front bumper with larger air intakes and an arching wing that almost appears to be floating in space. Flashes in the clip show off AMG branding for the brake calipers, steering wheel and seats, as is expected. This is clearly not a vehicle that'll appeal to everyone, but it offers an alternative to the latest BMW X6 M with 567 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes isn't saying what lies under the hood of the GLE63 AMG Coupe yet. Although given the name, we suspect a version of the brand's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is the likely choice. It's offered in the latest C63 AMG with either 469 or 503 hp. The debut for this CUV coupe is possible at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, where the standard GLE Coupe will be unveiled.
