We are offering for sale our original 1978 Mercedes-Benz 450SL Roadster with only 47,000 original miles from new. These low mileage examples have been getting more and more difficult for us to find. This original Mercedes 450SL is finished in its correct and most classic Mercedes Red over its original tan leather interior. We purchased this car from its longtime owner and enthusiast who had to recently give the car up due to his declining health. Beneficially coming from the owner of a Mercedes service center and dealership, this car has been properly maintained and cared for all its life.

The body on the car is straight and original, showing excellent gaps and panel fit. The paint presents nicely, showing only minor imperfections.  The brightwork on the car is excellent, as is the rubber, glass, wheels, and tires with plenty of remaining tread. The original interior is beautiful and extremely well kept and preserved. The car comes complete with both hard and soft tops in excellent shape.

As expected with such low original mileage example, this 450SL has been regularly and professionally maintained and absolutely runs and drives like a 47,000 original mile example. The car starts right up, does not smoke, and maintains a smooth and consistent idle. The motor is very strong and the gearbox pulls smoothly through each of its gears. This is an affordable, reliable classic and an investment that can be driven regularly while enjoying its design, its performance, and its appreciation in value throughout the months and years to come.

We want this car to go to a great home, so please feel free to email me or give us a call at 805-202-4557 if you have any additional questions. You can also visit us online at GoodmanReed.

While I have a California dealer license, I’m not your typical dealer. I’ve always had an appreciation for classic cars and have always bought and sold them to create a kind of very humble revolving personal collection, which, up until this posting, has contained the Mercedes you’re currently looking at. I try to give accurate descriptions of the cars I’m selling, but I’m not an expert and I encourage and am happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please do so before bidding, as the alternative harms my ability to make sales to other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before bidding.

For U.S. buyers a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end, the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible for shipping, however I’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and arrangements. The car is listed locally and I reserve the right to end the auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your interest.

Why we can't have better headlights here in the U.S.

Tue, Mar 13 2018

It wouldn't be a European auto show if we weren't teased with at least one mainstream vehicle we can't have here. At the Geneva Motor Show last week, the small but vocal contingent of shooting-brake buffs lamented that the Mazda6 wagon won't be coming to our shores, although they can take comfort in the fact that the vehicle won't get the torquey 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine we'll get here. Mercedes-Benz also announced a new headlight technology in Geneva that likely won't be available here anytime soon. It's just the latest in a long line of innovative and potentially lifesaving front-lighting solutions that the federal government doesn't allow in this country due to outdated standards — and a current lack of leadership at the U.S. Department of Transportation. Mercedes-Benz's new Digital Light system that debuted in Geneva uses a computer chip to activate more than a million micro-reflectors to better illuminate the road ahead. The Digital Light headlamps works with the vehicle's cameras, sensors and navigation mapping to adjust lighting for the given location and situation and to detect other road users. The Digital Light technology also serves as an extended head-up display of sorts by projecting symbols on the pavement ahead to alert drivers to, say, slippery conditions or pedestrians in the road. And it can even project lines on the road in a construction zone or through tight curves to show the driver the correct path. Digital Light will be available on Mercedes-Maybach vehicles later this year, although like any technology it's bound to trickle down to less expensive vehicles. That is, if we ever get it here in the U.S. Audi, a leader in automotive lighting, has repeatedly run into snags trying to bring state-of-the-art car headlights to the U.S. The German luxury automaker's recently introduced matrix laser headlight system, which performs many of the same trick as Mercedes-Benz's Digital Light, also isn't legal on U.S. roads. And five years after the introduction of its matrix-beam LED lighting, which illuminates more of the road without blinding oncoming motorists with brights by simultaneously operating high and low beams, Audi still can't bring that technology to the U.S. either.

Mercedes considering GLA-based crossover coupe

Wed, 30 Apr 2014

BMW opened a whole Pandora's Box when it introduced the X6 back in 2008. Sure it made little sense, sacrificing all that "utility" for a little more "sport," but it's been a solid success for BMW - especially considering the nominal expense it cost to develop the X6 on top of the X5 on which it's based. Little wonder that, while BMW has already followed up with a smaller version in the form of the X4, other automakers are starting to catch up. And that includes Mercedes-Benz.
The German automaker is preparing to launch a new MLC, based on the M-Class but with a sportier silhouette, and previewed it with the Concept Coupe SUV at the Beijing Motor Show. But that's just the start, according to the latest report from Automotive News Europe.
Mercedes is reportedly considering spinning off an entire line of crossovers more for use on the road than off it. Which may go without saying for most crossovers on the market, but considering the Geländwagen with which Mercedes got its start in SUVs, would mean an even further departure than it has undertaken already.

2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lineup shows its freshened face

Mon, 14 Jan 2013

Mercedes-Benz showed us its redesigned 2014 E-Class more than a month ago, but the Detroit Auto Show finally gave us a chance to see the full family of mid-size luxury cars and wagons in the flesh. Dieter Zetsche introduced the cars, including sedan, coupe, convertible and station wagon, on stage showing the stylish new design direction.
The wagon and sedan versions (shown as the E400 Hybrid above) will go on sale this spring, while the coupe and cabriolet will hit showrooms over the summer. Check our new gallery of live shots for the entire 2014 E-Class lineup, as well as the previously released press release below.
