Ready to drive anywhere.  The most attractive version of this long run of the Mercedes-Benz r107 with the small bumpers as the car was originally designed, contoured front turn signals and vertical bumper guards paying tribute to the Pagoda SL.

Beautiful 1973 450sl with shiny black new-looking paint and a nearly flawless red interior with antique-style orange piping that contrasts the body amazingly.  This is a very rare color combination.  The seats and dash have no rips, cracks or damage whatsoever.  The entire interior appears flawless, as you would expect from a collector condition Mercedes Benz.

I am only selling because I purchased a convertible that can seat three kids in the back seat.  (I wish it was as nice as this 1973.)

My mechanic (who has restored a few Mercedes) verified that the car looks like a 70,000 mile car which was garage kept its whole life (and through my ownership).  The odometer has always worked normally and the steering wheel appeared to have never been removed before I attempted to replace the instrument cluster gasket.  So I am very confident that the mileage is correct.

RUST FREE with the exception of some very small bubbles on the bottom edge of the trunk lid under the paint (not broken through and been there as long as I have owned it).  I found the cause of the water infiltration into the trunk lid via the 450sl badge which did not have the required rubber washers on two of the three badge pins.  I installed the correct rubber washers and added silicone sealant too.  No further water should get into the trunk lid and the rust progression in this trunk lid appears to be very slow or non existent. Trunk lids are easy to come by for these cars so there is no need to repair the small bubble contained to the trunk lid.  Repairing them would require paint work, and this car has no blended paint and does not need a full paint job.  So the decision has been made to leave the rust bubbles alone.  If they were to turn into rot, the whole rink lid could be replaced easily and economically.  As you can see from the extensive work on this car, the decision to not grind out the rust or replace the trunk lid and replace it is not a cost-cutting measure, but a decision to keep the paint as high-quality as possible without blending paint which would be required to attend to these small bubbles.

Work done in the last 3000 miles includes:
- new timing chain installed
- new timing chain tensioner installed
- metal-backed timing chain guides inspected ok
- new intake manifold gaskets installed
- new injector seals installed
- new fuel hoses installed
- new brake hoses installed and brakes flushed

- new control arm bushings installed
- new steering damper installed
- new center-link installed
- new tie rod installed
- new front sub-frame / axle carrier bushings
- new control arm bushings and ball-joints installed
- new shocks installed (front & back)
- new front wheel bearings installed
- new air conditioning compressor clutch / pulley installed
- waterproofed Mercedes-Benz brand soft top which appears original (see picture)
- new top latch seals installed
- Adjusted hardtop rear lock release cable (which is often responsible for hard tops getting stuck on these cars)
- Air conditioning vacuum tested for 72 hours (never losing any vacuum at all) and recharged and blowing as cold as 42 degrees F.
- replaced plastic blower cover with a more durable metal blower cover
- new distributor cap and rotor installed
- new spark plug wires installed & routed (under the rare distributor cap cover, see picture)
- new spark plugs installed
- new ignition points installed and timing tuned
- new radiator / coolant hoses installed
- new battery tray
- new aux air valve hose and gasket installed
- new shifter bushing installed
- new 100 degree C switch (aux fan switch) installed
- new throttle linkage bushings installed
- new coolant just prior to 70,000 miles
- oil change and filter just prior to 70,000 miles.
- thorough full body rust inspection and treatment of minor surface rust found in the rectangular area on the passenger side of the trunk.
- flex discs were inspected to be good, showing no signs of wear
- front sub-frame / axle-carrier inspected and includes the critical gusset reinforcements (see picture)
- alignment done and steering checked March 2011 (after suspension work) and has steered perfectly since.
- new front brake pads are included (but have not been needed or installed yet)

The Bridgestone Potenza tires, while not new, have plenty of tread and have no dry rot or cracking.  The tires have never needed any significant air.  They have no flat spots and ride smooth with no vibration.  (I have several more sporty wheels for this car if the buyer is interested in purchasing them.). The car also comes with four paint-free hubcaps since the black hubcaps on the car could use repainting.

The car was apparently in an accident at some point, but the repairs appear professional and are not recognizable without background information.   I was told by the previous owner that it was before he purchased it in ~1998.  The radiator support appears to have been replaced, having no VIN number on it. The car drives smooth and straight requiring no hands on the steering wheel to go straight, and has not needed any realignment in the 2.5 years since the alignment was done (after the front suspension was all redone with new bushings and shocks).

I recommend coming to see the car in person but believe that any long distance purchaser would be very happy with the car.

NHTSA, IIHS, and 20 automakers to make auto braking standard by 2022

Thu, Mar 17 2016

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and virtually every automaker in the US domestic market have announced a pact to make automatic emergency braking standard by 2022. Here's the full rundown of companies involved: BMW, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen, and Volvo (not to mention the brands that fall under each automaker's respective umbrella). Like we reported yesterday, AEB will be as ubiquitous in the future as traction and stability control are today. But the thing to note here is that this is not a governmental mandate. It's truly an agreement between automakers and the government, a fact that NHTSA claims will lead to widespread adoption three years sooner than a formal rule. That fact in itself should prevent up to 28,000 crashes and 12,000 injuries. The agreement will come into effect in two waves. For the majority of vehicles on the road – those with gross vehicle weights below 8,500 pounds – AEB will need to be standard equipment by September 1, 2022. Vehicles between 8,501 and 10,000 pounds will have an extra three years to offer AEB. "It's an exciting time for vehicle safety. By proactively making emergency braking systems standard equipment on their vehicles, these 20 automakers will help prevent thousands of crashes and save lives," said Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx said in an official statement. "It's a win for safety and a win for consumers." Read on for the official press release from NHTSA. Automakers making the commitment are Audi, BMW, FCA US LLC, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar Land Rover, Kia, Maserati, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan, Porsche, Subaru, Tesla Motors Inc., Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo Car USA.

Mercedes pays tribute to 1955 Mille Miglia with special-edition SL

Wed, Feb 18 2015

The Mercedes-Benz SL is one of the longest-running nameplates in the business, and its history has been marked with numerous achievements. But few were as impressive as the 1955 running of the Mille Miglia, and Mercedes pays tribute to that race and the results it achieved there with this latest special-edition roadster. Called the SL Special Edition Mille Miglia 417, this roadster starts with the eight-cylinder SL550 with dynamic stability management and adaptive damping and adds on several highlights. Red trim adorns the front spoiler, the stripe across the matte carbon rear spoiler, the brake calipers and the rims of the black AMG Performance wheels. The red pieces accent the matte black paint, while the interior features AMG Line sports seats with carbon-finish leather and red trim, along with a red and black nappa leather steering wheel and carbon trim. The SL arrives 60 years after the Mille Miglia in which a 300 SL driven by American gentleman racer John Fitch - bearing the number 417 and starting at 4:17 a.m. - led a 1-2-3 class finish, landing fifth overall and leaving many purpose-built racers in the dust. The special edition is confirmed for the US, arriving this fall with pricing to be announced closer to launch. SPECIAL EDITION SL "MILLE MIGLIA 417" Exclusive SL passion February 17, 2015 - Stuttgart -- Mercedes-Benz celebrates the 60th anniversary of a memorable motor racing success with an extraordinary special model of the SL Roadster. Its name commemorates the unexpected victory of a 300 SL in the production sports cars class at the 1955 "Mille Miglia", one of the world's most challenging long-distance races. What's more: the SL Special Edition "Mille Miglia 417" provides a special experience of the unique symbiosis of maximum comfort and motor racing spirit that traditionally characterizes every SL. The Special Edition adds a distinctive note, among other things, with red exterior highlights and fine materials in the exclusively appointed interior. The Mercedes-Benz SL Roadster is more than an icon. Passion shapes its character and its charisma – in the past and today. Legendary vehicles and their stories dominate the model history. One of them is told by the SL that started the famous "Mille Miglia" in 1955 with race number 417 at 4:17 am. After 11 hours, 29 minutes and 21 seconds it had completed the race distance of 1597 kilometres on public roads from Brescia to Rome and back.

VW could look outside its own ranks for next CEO

Fri, Feb 27 2015

Companies have two options when coming up with succession plans – hire within, or go outside its ranks. Either choice comes with advantages and disadvantages, to be sure. Hiring within means generally getting someone familiar with the company and its culture and traditions, while going outside is ideal if you're looking to shake things up and bring in fresh ideas. It's unclear which avenue the Volkswagen Group will go down when it comes time to replace its head man, Herr Professor Doctor Doctor Herr Martin Winterkorn, but he isn't ruling out a trip outside of Wolfsburg. Winterkorn has already given the reins of the VW brand to former BMW board member Herbert Diess, while Andreas Renschler, a former Daimler board member, is heading up VW's truck group. Now, Winterkorn has made some statements to a German weekly that indicate the most important thing about his successor isn't necessarily his (or her, though no women appear to be on the short-list) previous employer, Motoring.com.au is reporting, so much as his qualities as a leader and an engineering background. "A Volkswagen boss has to have a big affinity to our products. He needs to be close to customers and he needs to have a relationship with dealers," Winterkorn told Stern. "Like always, it depends on the personality and it also helps if the candidate is an engineer." Motoring throws out a couple of potential candidates from within, including Porsche boss Mathias Muller, Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler and engineering guru Ulrich Hackenberg, in addition to both Diess and Renschler. And while each candidate has a lot of potential, the only thing that's guaranteed right now is what Winterkorn has already said: "The decision about who will succeed me is not an easy one for the supervisory board."
