1966 Mercedes-benz 230sl - Rare Black/black, Manual Gearbox & Mechanically Stong on 2040-cars
Santa Barbara, California, United States
Offered for sale is a gorgeous, numbers matching, solid and correct 1966 Mercedes 230SL finished in rare, desirable and factory correct Black (DB 040) over black leather with the preferable 4-speed gearbox. A wonderful weekend driver example that has been cosmetically freshened as needed through the years, this W113 Pagoda is in beautiful cosmetic condition and is entirely honest with both tops, solid undercarriage and a strong original engine and transmission, and will undoubtedly provide its next owner with years of motoring enjoyment and appreciation. The Black finish is in great shape, deep, lustrous and marred only by the most negligible of imperfections, none of which were significant enough to appear in any of the pictures. The chrome is in great shape, as are the glass and rubber, and the color matched hub-capped wheels with beauty rings are wrapped in tires with plenty of remaining tread. The car comes with both tops: the original color matched hardtop and the black canvas soft top, both of which have been used infrequently, remaining in good condition. The car's interior is equally clean, the black leather seats entirely flawless, the carpets and interior panels showing only minimal wear, the wood trim in great shape and the dash housing the original Becker radio, fully functional gauges and a Kuhlmeister air conditioning system. The car’s undercarriage is entirely solid and largely original, with any minimal rust accrued over the years having been correctly and professionally repaired. The car is a joy mechanically, the original, numbers matching engine firing easily, idling consistently and pulling strongly and smoothly through each of the transmission’s gears. The four speed manual gearbox makes this car infinitely more fun to drive and desirable than the automatic cars. Compression is excellent and consistent across all cylinders, the ride quality is superb, the suspension and brakes behaving as they should, and this car illustrates that the W113 is perhaps the first classic Mercedes that has the requisite power and ease of operation to qualify as daily driver in modern traffic, while retaining visceral, vintage appeal. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire a quickly appreciating, drivable classic that checks all the boxes for an excellent weekend driver: rare and desirable original color combination, desirable manual gearbox, strong numbers-matching mechanicals, solid undercarriage and beautiful cosmetic condition. With clean Pagodas becoming more and more difficult to come by, this beautiful example deserves your serious consideration. We want
this car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and
answer any questions, so please feel free to email us or call us at 805-202-4557.

Reed Motorcars We’ve
always had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have created
an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally be
interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other
acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of
course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the
cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and
are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please
do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to
other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before
bidding. For U.S. buyers
a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end,
the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must
pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible
for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and
arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the
auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your
interest. |

Mercedes AMG GT3 racecar due in 2016
Sun, Nov 23 2014Our life with the Mercedes-AMG GT has only just begun, and a full life it looks like it will be. The latest in preposterous two-doors from AMG is launching in GT and GT S flavors, but a few more branches of the family tree are already planned: a racing entry for the FIA GT3 championship is scheduled to appear in 2016, giving the current SLS AMG GT3 another year to gobble up victories before it takes a drive across the Styx. More exciting for those who only suit up on Sunday for church, whispers are that a we'll also get a streetable version of the race car - not called "GT3" because that alphanumeric is owned by Porsche, but definitely aimed at its Stuttgart rival. AMG boss Tobias Moers told Autocar the objective for that car is "more power, less weight, better aerodynamics and different suspension but the targets should be the power to weight ratio, drivability, lap time and tremendous feel." Those targets will be aided by a carbon fiber weight-loss regime of up to 220 pounds and more power - perhaps 550 horsepower - from the currently "very understressed" engine. Supposing that still isn't enough for you, then the Black Series version should curl your toes, if you can wait until 2018 for it.
UK workers strand car on island of asphalt to keep working
Wed, 06 Feb 2013Generally speaking, when you illegally park your car, you're likely to get ticketed and towed, but there is probably at least one motorist in Scotland who wishes that was the case. After workers had blocked off a portion of the parking lot for the Edinburgh Waverley railway station, the driver of this Mercedes-Benz S-Class reportedly moved some of the barriers to park in one of the empty spots.
Rather than having the vehicle towed, the work crew simply tore up the asphalt around the leaving just the one parking spot intact, and as you can see in the image above (posted to the Twitter account of Harold Norstad), the crew even built a small asphalt ramp so the car could get off its blacktop pedestal. Since this happened last week, there's no word as to whether the car was eventually moved or towed for the resurfacing work to continue.
Let this be a warning...
Clark Gable's 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing doesn't sell, then does sell for $1.85 million [UPDATE: w/video]
Sat, 19 Jan 2013How much extra value does previous celebrity ownership add to of a car? Really, there's no way to know until the car in question hits the auction block and bidders start raising their hands. In the case of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing you see above, the celebrity owner is none other than Clark Gable, who purchased it new. After Gable's death in 1960, the car changed hands a few times before settling with Charles Wood in 1975.
A high-dollar restoration was performed in 1989, and period accessories added by Gable himself were kept in place, including the Rudge knock-off wheels and Nardi steering wheel. Any Mercedes-Benz 300SL is worth a big chunk of money. In the case of Clark Gable's old Gullwing, the bidding stalled at $1.9 million here at the 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale. As one of the 5000-series cars, this 300SL carried a reserve, and a bit of after-the-fact dealmaking saw the car change hands for $1.85 million.
You can see our high-res image gallery above, and the car's official auction description below.
