Here is an early 230SL equipped with the much-improved 2.8 motor that came later in the 280SL cars.  The motors look the same under the hood, but the 2.8 (marked as such on the block) is a  much sturdier and desirable motor with 7 (not 5) main bearings and more power. The prior owner restored the car over the last 10 years and removed the side mouldings that come on all the W113 Pagoda cars. It gives the car a much cleaner, modern look, especially with  the custom 16 inch Aluminum alloy rims and new 205/55 R16 Falken ZIEX tires. (No, they do not rub anywhere.) The pearl white paint job on the  rust-free body is complimented by correct German square weave wool 2-tone carpet laid over insulated floors.   The gaps around the doors, hood and trunk are uniform and true. Original wood interior trim is complete and in nice shape. Nice original ashtray. This is a true Euro version with no ugly side marker lights, headrests or  bumper guards. It has US headlight assemblies. The speedometer is  in kilometers and the other gauges are European as well. A high quality, powerful  Alpine CD stereo and working electric antenna have been added, along with  a pair of  6 by 9 Alpine speakers neatly tucked in the kick panels as shown.  Seats and  interior have been redone in parchment MB tex and are in mint condition, but the seat back adjusters do not work well, and the passenger side knob is missing.  Tan top is brand new German Sonnendeck with the herringbone pattern underneath. I have been driving the car for several  months and have added these new parts:  complete tune up, new fan belt, new brake cylinders and hoses, new rear brake shoes, new oil and filter, new antifreeze, flush and refill brake system, new battery, new trunk seal, OEM windshield weatherstriping, new windshield and  misc. other weatherstriping.  This car is a pleasure to drive. It holds good oil pressure and has never overheated once this summer. It starts very easily, does not miss or sputter, no smoking or knocking, takes bumps and potholes with ease, smooth ride, smooth shifting of automatic transmission, all gauges work, windows roll up and down, top latches fine front and back, all exterior lights work, heat and air levers work, wipers and squirter work. The original  clock is there but not operating. No rust in the storage compartments under the rear carpeted wood panels and no rust in the top well.  The  trunk is rust free.  The factory hard top is included, but it needs a little work in order to be as nice as the car is. The odometer says 86,125 kilometers. I assume it must be 186,125, but the title I got said it was actual miles. [186,125 kilometers is 115,653 miles.] The car is located in Charleston, West Virginia. If you want to fly in to see the car, I will drive this car to the airport and pick you up. The car is offered for sale locally, so this auction is subject to ending abruptly. High bidder to pay the $500 deposit within 24 hours of the end of the sale. Balance in cash or wire transfer prior to taking possession.

Range Rover versus Mercedes-Benz: Which makes a more appealing SUV?

Mon, Aug 14 2017

From time to time — truth be told, all the time — the Autoblog staff enjoys a good debate on the merits and demerits of the cars and trucks we drive each week. This week, we spent some time in a brand-new Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged SUV, a model some of us think sits at the pinnacle of the luxury utility vehicle segment. Others disagree. The following is a real-life online debate that took place over the course of a few hours. Have a read, and feel free to take sides. There's a poll at the end so you can make your voice heard. Consumer Editor Jeremy Korzeniewski: Strange as it may sound, Jeremy Clarkson and I have a few things in common, most obvious of which is that we share a given name. But we also both love cars so much that we decided to turn our automotive passion into a career — with varying degrees of success, of course — and we both have come to realize over time that there's no point in trying to topple the Land Rover Range Rover as the world's best luxury off-road utility vehicle. Thing is, this universal truth isn't quite as universally shared as I think it should be. In fact, my esteemed colleague Alex Kierstein believes that Mercedes-Benz makes the most desirable four-wheel-drive off-road vehicles. He's clearly wrong, but I feel obligated to let him explain his choice, though it won't go without a rebuttal. Senior Editor Alex Kierstein: That's correct, and so am I in this regard. I'm sorry, Jeremy, but it's an irrefutable fact that Mercedes-Benz is doing the best interiors in the business now. And the interior is where you're going to spend most of your time, at least when the thing's running. The Range Rover's interior simply isn't as special, and frankly it'll be in the shop enough that you won't enjoy it. Now, stepping into pretty much any contemporary Mercedes sedan interior is a "wow" moment. They seem special — posh, exclusive, luxurious. The SUVs, all older vehicles coming due for total redesigns at some point in the future, are lagging a bit, but it's still a premium and upscale experience. Especially since performance is almost academic at this point. Anything in this class is going to be powerful, almost absurdly so. So why not go for the one that makes you feel like royalty, rather than your mechanic? JK: I just want to point out that it was you who brought reliability into this discussion.

Infiniti Q50 Red Sport 400 priced at $48,855, AWD at $50,855

Fri, Apr 8 2016

Infiniti's most powerful production model, the new Q50 Red Sport 400, now has a starting price. You'll need at least $48,855 for the rear-drive model or $50,855 for all-wheel drive. (Both figures include the $905 destination charge.) A fully loaded, rear-drive Q50 RS400 with Direct Adaptive Steering, navigation, adaptive cruise control, a heated steering wheel, and Infiniti's entire alphabet soup of safety equipment, tops out at $57,045. (Again, add $2,000 for AWD). When it comes to rear-drive competition, the closest base price to the Q50 is the 320-hp BMW 340i. This German undercuts the Infiniti by two grand, $46,795 to $48,855. But the BMW outprices the Q50 as soon as you start selecting options. A 340i with similar equipment to a loaded Q50 Red Sport 400 costs just under $60,000. All-wheel-drive German competitors also lose out in the price war. Like with the rear-drive models, the BMW 340i xDrive undercuts the Q50 RS400 by around $2,000. Add the options, and the Infiniti becomes a better value. The other two big German rivals, the Audi S4 and Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG start at a higher price and only get more expensive. Technically the S4 starts cheaper than the Q50, but only with the standard manual transmission. Selecting the S-Tronic dual-clutch model kicks the price from $50,125 to $51,125, and going for the top-end Prestige trim will bump potential Audi owners up to $57,025. Throw on must-have S4 options, including adaptive cruise control, adaptive dampers, and a sport differential and you'll be shell out $64,425 for the Audi. The Mercedes-Benz C450 AMG is the priciest choice in this group, starting at $51,725, or roughly $900 more than a base Q50 RS400 with AWD. Options, again, are the downfall here. Building a C450 to match a loaded Infiniti will drive the Mercedes' price up to $64,315. While it occupies something of a weird space relative to these vehicles, it's also worth mentioning the Cadillac CTS VSport. It's the only car in this impromptu pricing comparo that can outgun the Q50, with its 3.6-liter, twin-turbo V6 good for 420 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It also starts at $60,950, although that includes plenty of standard equipment. All this means that the Q50 Red Sport 400 represents a relative value. It packs more power than the Germans – 80 more than the 340i, 67 more than the S4, and 38 more than the C450 – and a more comprehensive list of options, too.

2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG

Fri, 22 Feb 2013

Make way for the 2013 Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG, the most wonderfully preposterous car I have ever driven.
There is absolutely no reason why any two-seat roadster should be fitted with a twin-turbocharged 6.0-liter V12 developing 621 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque, but I sure am glad that Mercedes-Benz doesn't see things that way.
Drop into the leather-lined cockpit of this $213,145 provocateur, floor the accelerator pedal as I did over and over again, and 60 miles per hour falls in a traction-limited 3.9 seconds. Top speed has been electronically held to 186 mph (this apparently saves Gulfstream jet owners from embarrassment). Forget the SL550 and SL63 AMG, the valets will trip over themselves attending to the tycoon driving this thoroughbred - it's the real deal.
