1957 Mercedes Benz 190sl: Gorgeous, Rust-free, Correct R121 W/ Optional Hardtop on 2040-cars
Santa Barbara, California, United States
Offered for sale
is an absolutely gorgeous, rust-free, numbers-matching 1957 Mercedes Benz 190SL
finished in striking, factory-correct Fire Engine Red (DB 534) over a parchment
leather interior. Mechanically sorted and retaining its correctly tuned Solex carburetors,
this car runs as beautifully as its elegant, swooping lines present, needing
nothing to be enjoyed aside from an appreciative new owner. And speaking of
appreciation, there is perhaps no single classic car (with the exception of the
V12 Ferraris) that has seen such an explosive rise in valuation over the last
five years, with fine examples such as this joining the ranks of true
investment grade cars. The recipient of a comprehensive and high quality restoration nearly a decade ago by its previous owner, the car was subsequently used solely as a garaged and well-taken-care-of weekend driver and event participant. Accordingly, the car remains in excellent condition, its Fire Engine Red finish deep, lustrous and consistent, marred only by the most insignificant of imperfections, none of which appear in any of the pictures. The car’s body is entirely straight and free of any noticeable evidence of accidents or body-work, with exceptionally even and correct panel fits and gaps throughout. The glass and rubber is all in great shape, as is the chrome, which is free of any dings or blistering. The car’s undercarriage is entirely solid and correct with absolutely no rust whatsoever and the car sits on its original color matched, hub-capped steel wheels, which are wrapped in complimentary white wall tires. The car’s interior is equally as clean, the parchment leather seats and interior panels showing only the most negligible of wear, the complimentary tan carpets impeccable and the leather wrapped dash free of any wear or sun damage. The car retains its flawless, un-cracked ivory steering wheel, as well as its clock and rare Becker Mexico radio. 190SLs were sold with either a soft top or a desirable removable hard top, but the earlier cars were not sold with both because the hard-top’s design prevented both from being on the car at the same time. This car retains its original hardtop in equally gorgeous condition to the rest of the car, however, based on the next owner’s preference, we also have an original early R121 soft top frame (a photograph is included) and a spare correct canvas soft-top which we can discuss making part of the sale. 190SL enthusiasts know just how rare and valuable these frames have become, prompting aftermarket reproductions to cost as much as $7,500. The car is mechanically superb, its original numbers-matching engine starting right up without any smoke, idling consistently, maintaining excellent, even compression across all cylinders and pulling strongly under acceleration, thanks in part to its accurately tuned original Solex carburetors. The car’s gearbox is smooth and correct, with effortless up and down shifts across all gears, and the car’s brakes and suspension all function as they should, rounding out a visceral, vintage and grin-inducing ride quality. This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an appreciating classic that ticks all the right boxes: numbers-matching, rust-free, cosmetically gorgeous in its original livery, mechanically sound and with its original and desirable hard top. Show quality examples have been selling routinely above $200,000, and as high as $269,500 at auction, prompting incredible market demand. We can assure you that this fine example will be sold at a much more reasonable price, representing an excellent value for an investment grade classic that can also be driven and enjoyed. Please bid accordingly. We want this car to go to great home and would be happy to further discuss it and answer any questions, so please feel free to email us or call us at 805-202-4557. Reed Motorcars We’ve
always had an appreciation for classic European cars and over the years have
created an eclectic personal collection. We only buy cars that we’d personally
be interested in owning and generally only sell them to make room for other
acquisitions. That time has come for this Mercedes (if the price is right, of
course – this isn’t a fire sale). We try to give accurate descriptions of the
cars we’re selling, but we’re enthusiasts, not experts, and we encourage and
are happy to help facilitate personal or professional inspections. But please
do so before bidding, as the alternative harms our ability to make sales to
other interested parties who have done their proper due diligence before
bidding. For U.S. buyers
a 10% non-refundable deposit is required within 3 days of the auction’s end,
the balance to be paid within 7 days of the auction’s end. Foreign buyers must
pay in full within 7 business days of the auction’s end. Buyer is responsible
for shipping, however we’d be more that happy to help with recommendations and
arrangements. The car is listed locally and we reserve the right to end the
auction at any time should it sell prior to auction’s end. Thanks for your
interest. |

The BMW M8 leads this month's list of discounts
Mon, Sep 21 2020Back in June of this year, the BMW 8 Series was the most heavily discounted vehicle in America. This month, it's the 617-horsepower M8. Midsummer buyers of the 2020 BMW M8, which is offered in hardtop, convertible and four-door Gran Coupe bodystyles, were seeing an average of $6,150 cut off the sticker; this month that figure has ballooned all the way to $16,864. That's more than 11% off the car's $150,000-plus retail price, and, according to data provided by TrueCar, it's the largest dollar amount sliced off the retail price of any car for the month of September. Next is the Maserati Quattroporte, buyers of which are saving $15,912 for an average transaction price of $99,763. If that's still too expensive, the smaller Ghibli's $70,030 average transaction price represents a huge 14.5% discount, earning the Italian sedan entry into our monthly top 10 best deals list. The third largest monetary discount in September comes off the $131,066 sticker price of the lovely 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT. Take $15,473 off that sum for an average transaction price of $115,593. Zetsche's CEO tenure extended through 2016 at Daimler
Sun, 24 Feb 2013There appear to be two takes on Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche having his contract extended for three more years, to 2016. A report in The Detroit News quotes the chairman of Daimler's supervisory board, Manfred Bischoff, talking up the stability at the top, "With today's extensions of the contracts of Dieter Zetsche and Thomas Weber, we are maintaining the important continuity at the top executive level." Bischoff also stated that that Zetsche has a plan to "further enhance Daimler's overall performance."
Over at Reuters, though, the three-year extension was seen as a lack of complete confidence in Zetsche's plans, since his contract was supposedly meant to be extended by five years. A spokesman said the board decided to extend executive contracts by only three years if the person was 60 or would turn 60 during the contract, but that was news to observers. Zetsche wants to make Mercedes-Benz the top selling luxury manufacturer globally by 2020, but has fallen to third place behind Audi and BMW. It hasn't held the top spot 2005, and investors judged it valued at half that of BMW at the end of 2012 once Daimler's truck business was subtracted.
Analysts cites the fact that Daimler stock hasn't bested its rivals but twice in twelve years, and that the company revised its profit target downward last year by nearly one billion euros, warning of stagnant earnings this year and will miss its original margin target for 2013.
Drive like a prince: Join us for a walk through Monaco's car collection
Fri, Dec 29 2023Small, crowded, and a royal pain in the trunk lid to drive into during rush hour, Monaco sounds like an improbable location for a huge car museum. And yet, this tiny city-state has been closely linked to car culture for over a century. It hosts two major racing events every year, many of its residents would qualify for a frequent shopper card if Rolls-Royce issued one, and Prince Rainier III began assembling a collection of cars in the late 1950s. He opened his collection to the public in 1993 and the museum quickly turned into a popular tourist attraction. The collection continued to grow after his death in April 2005; it moved to a new facility located right on Hercules Port in July 2022. Monaco being Monaco, you'd expect to walk into a room full of the latest, shiniest, and most powerful supercars ever to shred a tire. That's not the case: while there is no shortage of high-horsepower machines, the first cars you see after paying ˆ10 (approximately $11) to get in are pre-war models. In that era, the template for the car as we know it in 2023 hadn't been created, so an eclectic assortment of expensive and dauntingly experimental machines roamed whatever roads were available to them. One is the Leyat Helica, which was built in France in 1921 with a 1.2-liter air-cooled flat-twin sourced from the world of aviation. Fittingly, the two-cylinder spun a massive, plane-like propeller. Government vehicles get a special spot in the museum. They range from a Cadillac Series 6700 with an amusing blend of period-correct French-market yellow headlights and massive fins to a 2011 Lexus LS 600h with a custom-made transparent roof panel that was built by Belgian coachbuilder Carat Duchatelet for Prince Albert II's wedding. Here's where it all gets a little weird: you've got a 1952 Austin FX3, a Ghia-bodied 1959 Fiat 500 Jolly, a 1960 BMW Isetta, and a 1971 Lotus Seven. That has to be someone's idea of a perfect four-car garage. One of the most significant cars in the collection lurks in the far corner of the main hall, which is located a level below the entrance. At first glance, it's a kitted-out Renault 4CV with auxiliary lights, a racing number on the front end, and a period-correct registration number issued in the Bouches-du-Rhone department of France. It doesn't look all that different than the later, unmodified 4CV parked right next to it. Here's what's special about it: this is one of the small handful of Type 1063 models built by Renault for competition.
