Sales start for $146,000 Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug In Hybrid

Mercedes-Benz's first production plug-in hybrid is chock full of astounding numbers, including the price tag. The base price is 108,944.50 euros, or about $146,000 US. If that didn't make your eyes glaze over, the Daimler division is ready to take your down payments now that the Mercedes-Benz S500 Plug-in Hybrid is officially on sale. Deliveries to European dealerships start in September. Details on the PHEV sedan were divulged last August and it was first shown off at last year's Frankfurt Motor Show. Benz calls it the, "first luxury saloon with the performance of a V8 and the fuel consumption of a compact model." That's no exaggeration. The car's powertrain that pairs a 3.0-liter V6 twin-turbo with an electric motor that delivers 436 horsepower and a 0-62 mile per hour acceleration time of just 5.2 seconds. Top speed is 155 miles an hour. On the green side, the car can go as far as almost 21 miles on electric power alone and gets a fuel-efficiency rating, on the more lenient European driving cycle, of 84 miles per gallon equivalent. The car also includes a so-called COMAND navigation system that tweaks how the electric motor is used based on the driver's desired route. Very high-tech. The luxury saloon with a long wheelbase impresses with unique dynamism and efficiency. Thanks to standard pre-entry climate control it also offers unique climate comfort. In September the first certified three-litre luxury saloon in the world will be arriving at the dealers - a further milestone on the road to emission-free mobility. "The new S 500 PLUG-IN HYBRID offers our customers the entire range of innovations that make our new S-Class so successful, and thanks to its intelligent operating strategy ensures outstanding driving pleasure and dynamism combined with the highest efficiency. Moreover, it allows completely emission-free driving for up to 33 km," says Ola Kallenius, Executive Vice-President for Sales at Mercedes-Benz Cars. New Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe spied in revealing state of dress

During a product briefing earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz told us that 2013 would be the "year of the S-Class." Makes sense, too, since the flagship Mercedes is so very close to finally showing its production-ready face. But the high-tech saloon isn't the only S-Class to talk about this year - quite the contrary. Seen here in decidedly revealing camouflage, the new S-Class Coupe will be joining its four-door compadre in the not-too-distant future, as well.
When it launches, the S-Class Coupe will officially do away with the CL-Class nomenclature. This doesn't come as a huge shock. After all, when the new E-Class coupe and convertible were launched, it officially marked the end of the long-running CLK-Class designation.
Thanks to the interesting camouflage seen here, we have a very good glimpse at how the S-Class Coupe will look when all of the molding and swirly paper are peeled off. Rakish body lines pulled from the CLS-Class meet a much more dynamic front fascia. Out back, there are horizontal taillamps rather than the vertical units used on the current car, and the whole package seems very svelte. Our spy photographer even posits that this will be "the best-looking car from Mercedes-Benz in ages."

Mercedes G63 AMG 6x6 is sold out

Sometimes automakers go absolutely bonkers and bequeath a product on the world that makes no logical sense – except to make people grin from ear to ear. The Mercedes-Benz G63 AMG 6X6 is just such a vehicle with six wheels, three axles, five differentials and a 5.5-liter twin-turbocharged V8 making 536 horsepower and 561 pound-feet of torque. The result is a truck that looks more appropriate to handle the dystopian future rather than any paved road on Earth, especially the $1.35 million armored version. Unfortunately, if you have a hankering to own a brand-new example, it's too late because Mercedes is ending production of the behemoth. Since introducing the 6X6 in 2013, Mercedes actually sold more than it originally anticipated by moving more than 100 of them, according to GT Spirit, but the German automaker has ended production to keep the model special. Still, those production numbers aren't too shabby considering the truck's ultra-niche nature and base price of 379,000 euros ($430,000 at current exchange rates). While wealthy clients who desire luxury with their off-roading can no longer order the 6X6, Mercedes isn't entirely abandoning these customers yet. The company is already previewing the G500 4x42 that takes the six-wheeler's pumped up suspension and wheels but reinterprets the look on the more conventional, two-axle body style. Buyers might have to accept a naturally aspirated 5.5-liter V8, though. A debut for the new model is expected for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show in early March. Related Video:
