2017 Mercedes-AMG C63 Coupe looks quick, mean
Tue, Apr 21 2015The latest Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe isn't even on the road yet. Still, the folks at AMG are already working at tweaking the two-door into a future high-performance variant as the natural challenger for the BMW M4. While this model is heavily camouflaged all the way around, an aggressive face akin to the C63 sedan is already pretty easy to spot. Both cars feature air dams with big openings to feed cool air to the 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 under the hood. Compared to the previously spied, standard version of the two-door C-Class, the AMG looks to feature wider front fenders, too. Despite the concealment, other visible high-performance touches include lower side sills and larger brakes peeking out behind the wheels. Of course, the four exhaust pipes sticking out the back are a big giveaway of the coupe's intended high-speed purpose, too. Like the C63 sedan, expect a choice of tunes of the V8 to be available with either 469 horsepower or the more powerful S with 503 hp. The wait to see the two-door without all of this camo shouldn't be too long, either. Mercedes Concept IAA shows its mighty morphing aero aids
Tue, Sep 15 2015Modern supercars are utilizing more active aerodynamic elements that constantly adjust, to make them some of the fastest things on the road. The Mercedes-Benz Concept Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile is using them too, but the know-how is applied here for ultimate efficiency rather than turning better lap times. In the standard design mode, the four-door luxury coupe looks like a CLS from the near future with styling that's mixed with a little of the F 015 concept. However at the press of a button or upon hitting about 50 miles per hour, the IAA transforms into aero mode to have an insanely low drag coefficent of just 0.19. To achieve the ultra-efficient shape, the rear of the concept stretches over 15 inches to guide air down the tail. Flaps in the bumpers also extend outward, and the wheels adjust to improve the flow around the sides. To trim things out underneath, a portion inside the front bumper moves, as well. Inside, passengers sit in organically shaped leather seats, but occupants have to look at a vast array of purple and blue LED accent lights. The big panoramic roof is a nice touch, though. It would be interesting to watch water tumble over this slippery shape when driving in the rain. To maximize efficiency, Mercedes powers the IAA with a plug-in hybrid that's hooked up to a gasoline engine. The result is 275 horsepower and an electronically limited top speed of 155 miles per hour. On the European testing cycle, the company figures the concept could cover 41 miles solely on electric power in aero mode. Showing the gains of the swoopy transformation, that figure falls to 38.5 miles in design mode.
Mercedes-Benz Concept IAA is a modern silver aero
Mon, Sep 14 2015While we English-speaking folk call it the Frankfurt Motor Show, our German friends call this week's bi-annual confab the Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung, or IAA. At first glance, then, you might think Mercedes-Benz named its Frankfurt concept, the Concept IAA, after the show it'd debut at. But, the Concept IAA isn't named for the show. It's actually an abbreviation for Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile, and it's very aerodynamic indeed. This four-door coupe can transform, while moving, from its sedan-like design mode to an ultra-sleek, gas-powered fish of a car. This aerodynamic mode has a drag coefficent of just 0.19. That's sleeker than a Tesla Model S, and it ties the rating of the General Motors EV1 electric car. In fact, it's very nearly as aerodynamic as the Volkswagen XL1. The IAA can transform automatically at 80 kilometers per hour (about 50 miles per hour) or via the press of a button. When it enters an aerodynamic mode, eight segments at the back of the car extend out, adding over 15 inches to the overall vehicle length, effectively extending its already tear-dropped-shaped tail. And that's just the most visible aero aid. At the front of the car, flaps in the bumper extend out nearly an inch, while there's a smaller extender in the back bumper. These serve to keep air away from the wheel arches, where turbulence can become an issue. Of course, Mercedes has thought of this, too, fitting "Active Rims" that "alter their cupping from 55 mm to zero," whatever that means. There's even an active aero aid inside the front bumper, where a louver extends backward by 2.3 inches to smooth out the air traveling underneath the car. Outside of its super-slippery mode, the IAA is a relatively handsome four-door coupe, featuring the kind of plunging roofline that wouldn't look out of place on the company's pioneering CLS-Class. The interior is certainly worthy of the CLS, too. It's home to gorgeous white leather and touch-based controls, and in general, looks very luxurious. Mercedes' dogged pursuit of aerodynamics does not mean that the Concept IAA is some gutless ecomobile. Under the skin is a gas-powered, plug-in hybrid system that produces up to 279 horsepower and allows the sleek sedan to hit 155 mph. Its all-electric range is based, of course, on what mode its body is in. It's most impressive in aero mode, where it will cover 41 miles on a single charge. Switch over to design mode, and that figure drops slightly to 38.5 miles.
