I retired from an airline not so long ago. My wife and I are downsizing and
parting with a number of things that we have collected over the last 45 years.

Along with the downsizing and selling some things on E-bay there have been a
few other things we are changing...so here's my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Our 40th Anniversary is coming up in a few weeks, so I asked my wife what she wanted to do...
She said, "Let's buy a pop-top camper and go camping!" We had borrowed a pop-top camper
from her parents and taken it on our honeymoon in 1973. I agreed but said that we would
need to purchase a tow vehicle as well. We purchased the tow vehicle (this ML320) first and
proceeded to look at pop-top campers. We found a pop-top we liked and bought it (you can see it in the background in some of the pictures). The three of us went on our first camping trip (we have a 30 yr. old son with Down Syndrome who goes everywhere with us). After all the thought, time and effort I spent trying to find the "perfect" (reliable, excellent condition, safe, trustworthy, etc.) tow vehicle,
I did not realize the amount of gear and other "stuff" it takes for three adults to go camping.
What was left over after the camper itself was packed had to go in the back of the Mercedes.
We took it on our first trip and the opinion was unanimous... we need a Suburban or something with a lot bigger storage area. That's why I am selling it...
now for details on the Mercedes.

This is a 2001 Mercedes ML320 Sport Model (different trim and more options).
The most important option is side airbags for the rear passengers.
....driver's side and passenger side front are standard
Navigation (with the cd-rom set)
Bose sound system with weather band
Single cd and cassette in dash and 6 disc cd player in rear
Entertainment system and drop down screen for rear passengers
....entertainment system is VHS not DVD...I don't know if it works...I don't have any VHS tapes
it would seem that the VHS player could be swapped out with a CD player
(I have not investigated that possibility as I need a bigger vehicle)
Heated leather seats
Moonroof
Automatic 5 speed transmission with manual (no clutch ) shifting ability
All wheel drive
Factory tint windows
Mercedes side steps (running boards/ whatever they are called...see pictures)
Lockable strong box mounted under passenger front seat (with keys)
Sport wheels
AMG exhaust
New Dunlop tires
New rear brakes for first trip (front were good)
Battery new less than two years ago (receipt was in glove box)
new oil (Mobil 1) and filter before trip
I had a brand new Draw Tite hitch (made for this model Mercedes)
and electric brake assist installed by a local company that
specialized in hitch installation. 2 inch drop Draw bar with 2 inch ball.
Hitch capacity is 5000 lbs. and that matches the Mercedes towing capacity specifications.
(that hitch package and labor cost me $900 three weeks ago....I have the receipts)

This Mercedes runs and drives great. It is safe and more quiet on the highway than I imagined.
I would certainly keep it if it was big enough for our needs.

You may have noticed that it has a salvage/rebuilt title...
I bought it from the manager of a customer service department for a national insurance company.
He said that a number of years ago the rear bumper cover was scraped on the left in a parking lot by another car. The cover was replaced and did not affect anything more or the title.
More recently he was bumped in the front on the drivers side.
The bumper cover, fog light, and fender on the driver's side was replaced with genuine Mercedes parts. I have a photograph of the damage, prior to repair, taken by the previous owner.
He is employed by the same insurance company that insures his car and was required to send his title to NC state Department of Motor Vehicles where it was branded salvage/rebuilt.
When he had to purchase the driver's side headlight assembly he decided to replace both
sides with the new LED running lights and halos around the headlight projectors.
( I have the original assembly for the passenger's side)

As of July 19, 2013 Kelly Blue Book values it with the options and low mileage at $9788
and that's without the hitch and electric brake control unit.

I have it listed at $8500 or best offer.
I am not interested in any trades unless you have an Escalade ESV or a loaded Suburban.
Come see it...you will be impressed as I obviously was.
(That picture with my reflection is of the door, not the glass...)

Paul di Resta returns to DTM with Mercedes

Tue, 21 Jan 2014

Some drivers manage to make the transition from one form of motor racing into another, and some run into trouble. Take Paul di Resta, for example. The promising young Scottish driver dominated Formula 3 racing in Europe in 2006, then moved over to Germany's hugely competitive DTM touring car series where he finished second in 2008, third in 2009 and first in 2010. But things didn't go as smoothly for Paul - cousin to retired Indy champion Dario Franchitti - when he moved in to Formula One with the Force India team.
In three years on the grid, he failed to score a single podium finish. Little surprise, then, that Force India opted not to renew his contract for this season. Left without a ride, di Resta is now going back to DTM with longtime supporter Mercedes-Benz, testing the new C-Class touring car today in Portugal. It's good news for Mercedes, which is celebrating 120 years in motor racing this season and, with 2005 champion Gary Paffett also on board, can now count two former champions on its DTM roster.
We wouldn't count Paul out of F1 for good, though. When he won the DTM title four years ago, he was also moonlighting as Force India's test driver, and we wouldn't be surprised to see him pull similar double-duty with the Mercedes F1 team (or another Benz-powered outfit) this year before spring-boarding back into grand prix racing in the future. At 27 years old, he may not have been the youngest driver on the grid this year, but he's still got a good few years ahead of him.

My year in EVs: 8 electrics that are changing the car industry

Wed, Dec 1 2021

The year 2021 will go down as an inflection point in the auto industry’s transition to electric vehicles. It's when many much-anticipated models became reality. No longer sketches or sketchy prototypes, electric vehicles appeared from all corners with everything from the Lucid Air to Ford Mustang Mach-E changing how we think about transportation. I managed to drive a lot of them, and as I went through my notes, I realized IÂ’ve got a mini memoir of the seminal EVs of 2021. HereÂ’s my take on eight of them. Hummer EV Easily the most over-the-top EV I tested this year. The 1,000-hp super truck lived up to the hype with its domineering presence, stupendous power and simply being a reincarnated Hummer. I took it for a short spin on- and off-road at the General Motors Proving Grounds in Milford, Mich., and was impressed with the airy cabin, removable sky panels and expansive touchscreens. Yes, I crab walked, which felt like steering a pontoon boat, though I can see why it would be useful. Lucid Air Dream Performance The most beautiful sedan I tested all year, EV or otherwise. Unlike the futuristic Mercedes EQS — which is quite attractive — LucidÂ’s car is a blend of mid-century modern interior aesthetics and classic European exterior styling. When I walked up for my test drive, someone who IÂ’m pretty sure was comedian Jon Lovitz was sitting inside and taking it all in. As it sat in the valet of a hotel in a wealthy suburban enclave north of Detroit, the Lucid drew more attention than any of the Mercedes, Cadillacs or Lexus models passing by. The driving experience was enveloping. Starting at $169,000 for the Performance model (reservations are closed), the Lucid I sampled packed 1,111 hp and 471 miles of range. From the precise steering to the comfortable suspension, the dynamics were spot-on. It's a formidable product, and all the more impressive given itÂ’s LucidÂ’s first. Chevy Bolt EV The Bolt was the most pleasant surprise for me. It handled well, offered low-to-the-ground hot hatch dynamics and the steering was dialed-in. Adding a crossover variant for the new generation was a smart play. On a summer morning where I went to a first drive of the Ford Bronco at an off-road course, my hour-long commute in the Bolt was an enjoyable appetizer.  The Bolt was also my biggest disappointment due to its extensive recalls for fire risk. Ironically, I had the Bolt in my driveway when the initial recall went out for the previous generation (2017-19).
