The biggest gas-guzzlers of 2024: 'The Meanest List' is the opposite of greenest cars

In some circles — especially some automotive circles — bigger is better. This explains the Hummer, for example. In its so-called “Meanest List” of a dozen models, the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) makes no apologies for berating “the worst-performing mass market automobiles” sold in 2024 in the U.S. The most diminutive car on the list is a Chevy Corvette Z06. At the top of this particular heap is the Mercedes-Benz AMG G63, a gas-powered SUV that the environmental agency says was “the worst-performing vehicle of the more than 1,200 models assessed by Greener Cars and has an annual fuel cost over $4,000.” Not to mention its MSRP of around $184,000. Lonely at the middle of the list is the sole electric, the GMC Hummer EV, which weighs in at 9,000 pounds. Test drive the Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive with Chris Harris

It's hard to not like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT. The all-aluminum coupe is fitted with a wonderful naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque. Not only does the burly combustion engine launch the two-seater to 60 miles per hour in less than four seconds, but it does so with one of the world's greatest exhaust soundtracks as it roars, burbles and cackles down the road.
But what happens when Mercedes-Benz takes away the V8 and its accompanying fire-burning song? Stripped of one of its most appealing assets, does the SLS lose its soul?
Chris Harris recently had the opportunity to take the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Electric Drive for a track spin in Europe. Sans gasoline, but with four electric motors providing a combined 740 horsepower (737 pound-feet of torque), all-electric all-wheel drive coupe uses sophisticated torque vectoring and a multi-mode operating system to put oversteer - drifting! - back into the equation. Leaked dealer docs say Mercedes-AMG GT S to start at $129,900

The 2016 Mercedes-AMG GT exists as one of the most hotly anticipated European sports coupes to come along in quite some time. Offering some beautifully swoopy styling and a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 with 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque in S trim, there's really not much to dislike about it. However, until now, the price of this gorgeous German remained a mystery. According to a leaked letter to dealers obtained by Jalopnik, pricing for the 2016 GT S model allegedly starts at $129,900, and the coupe reportedly comes standard with a Nappa leather interior, Collision Prevention Assist Plus, Mercedes' COMAND infotainment system, Parktronic and Burmester sound system. The document also says more info about specific option pricing would be released in a few weeks. We've already compared both trims of the GT to the venerable Porsche 911 because the coupes seem like such natural competitors. Knowing the possible price adds one more factor to consider, though. In terms of performance, the GT S basically slots just below the 911 Turbo. However, if this amount is correct, then the starting cost is about $20,000 less than the turbocharged Porsche. While on paper the Mercedes lags somewhat in acceleration and power, it also arguably offers buyers a bit more style.
