This car was bought two years ago on eBay when it had 85K miles.  My commute is 45 highway miles [each way] - so I often put nearly 500 miles per week [at an average of 22 MPG].  This beautiful car [I call her Espresso - which is also her Designo color] has performed flawlessly.  And I've babied her.  [Non-Smoker].  One new set of tires [Bridgestone Potenza RE 760 Sports - rated W91] and one new set of brakes, [both within approximately 4k miles] while in my care.  All maintenance was done in a timely fashion based on Mercedes recommendations.  My commute has changed, so I am going Electric.

"Espresso" has the Designo package, which for the uninitiated is the heinously expensive "pick-your-own-bespoke-options" designation.  This car has Alcantara Suede option for the A pillars and sun visors.  It has extra wood trim.  The car has a very unique color called Espresso - which is a mix of black and brown with some metal flake in it.  The interior is tan leather and Alcantara [even has embossed headrests].  It is "Uma Thurman" gorgeous.  The car has almost every option that Mercedes could jam into it.  The car has a 302 HP V8 that scadaddles/roars when you give her the boot.  339 foot pounds of torque mean that there are few cars that will stay with her off the line - should you choose to exercise her in such a manor.  This car makes big, tall, ugly men [like me] feel comfortable and special.  Have you driven a CLK500?  I think they outperform a Audi A4/S4, or the BMW 3 series.  JMHO.

AMG sport package, heated seats, auto-on wipers and lights, 6 disc cd changer, Bose stereo, xenon high-intensity lights, et al.

Most importantly, you are going to look sensational driving her.  And, because the car is such a stellar value - your also going to feel great about your purchase.  [Your buddies/neighbors aren't going to know it isn't a $80,000 luxury vehicle].

I am selling her as a used car with greater than 124,500 miles driven, [and the mileage will continue to grow each day] so she has a number of imperfections [many stone chips, small scratches, small cracks in the plastic on the back bumper]. I've tried my best to take informative pictures so you won't have any surprises.  The car is being sold "as is." You need to arrange all shipping/transportation.   Pls ask all questions prior to the end of the auction.  Pls don't bid unless you have the money/permission from your wife.

My wife and I are also selling her car [E500 with the panoramic roof] at no reserve.  [Pls feel free to check out our other auction and buy both if the mood strikes you].    Many thanks for your consideration.

Aston Martin tipped for F1 return with Red Bull, Mercedes

Mon, Jul 6 2015

Aston Martin could be plotting a return to Formula One for the first time in over half a century. And not as a backmarker, either. That is, at least, if the latest rumors materialize. While most automakers that participate in F1 do so as either a team owner (like Ferrari and Mercedes) or as an engine supplier (think Renault or Honda), the rumored Aston Martin deal would take a different approach. According to Autosport, the proposal would have the Red Bull Racing team run Aston Martin branding – but not its engines. Those would be provided by Mercedes, just like the engines in the British marque's upcoming slate of road cars. In that regard, the deal would not be unlike the one which Red Bull currently has with the Renault-Nissan Alliance, which sees the team running Renault engines and Infiniti branding. Andy Palmer was a pivotal figure in brokering that unusual arrangement when he was working for Carlos Ghosn, and is now tipped to be brokering a similar deal in his new capacity as Aston Martin's CEO. Though Aston has found glory in sports car racing (including Le Mans and its various associated series), it was never much of a contender in grand prix racing. It competed in a handful of races in 1959 and 1960, but never achieved results worth bragging about. Aston was rumored to be plotting a return when David Richards sat as chairman of the company, having run Aston's racing program as well as Honda's F1 team previously. Those rumors, however, never materialized. Whether this time 'round gains any traction remains to be seen - Aston Martin declined to either confirm or deny the reports when reached for comment by Autoblog. Red Bull has been growing increasingly dissatisfied (and increasingly vocal about its dissatisfaction) with Renault engines over the past couple of seasons. Though the two parties won four back-to-back world titles together, things took a noticeable step backward after the new turbo engine regulations took hold for the 2014 season. Nissan/Infiniti and Red Bull are contracted to continue collaborating until the end of next season. After that is when the new Aston deal could take hold, and Mercedes is reportedly keen on the idea so that it could add another customer to its F1 engine supply business and offset the costs of development. That could effectively prove the end of Renault in F1 (at least for the time being). Aside from Red Bull, the French automaker currently supplies only that outfit's sister team Toro Rosso.

Foreign automakers pay from $38 to $65 per hour to non-union workers

Sun, Mar 29 2015

As leaders for the United Auto Workers gather in Detroit for their Special Convention on Collective Bargaining to work out the negotiating stance for this year's new labor agreements with the Detroit 3 automakers, what they most want to do is figure out how to eliminate the two-tier wage scale. However, the lower Tier 2 wage has allowed the domestic automakers to reduce their labor costs, hire more workers, and compete better with their import competition. As it stands, per-hour labor rates including benefits are $58 at General Motors, $57 at Ford, and $48 at Fiat-Chrysler – a reflection of FCA's much greater number of Tier 2 workers. The Center for Automotive Research released a study of labor rates (including benefits) that put numbers to what the imports pay: Mercedes-Benz pays the most, at an average of $65 per hour, Volkswagen pays the least, at $38 per hour, and BMW is just a hair above that at $39 per hour. Among the Detroit competitors, Honda workers earn an average of $49 per hour, at Toyota it's $48 per hour, Nissan is $42 per hour, and Hyundai-Kia pays $41 per hour. The lower import wages are aided by their greater use of temporary workers compared to the domestics. Automotive News says the ten-dollar gap between those foreign camakers and the domestics turns out to about an extra $250 per car in labor, which adds up quickly when you're pumping out many millions of cars. That $250-per-car number is one that, come negotiating time, the Detroit 3 will want to reduce, as the UAW is trying to raise both Tier 1 and Tier 2 wages. Another wrinkle is that the domestic carmakers are considering the wide adoption of a third wage level lower than Tier 2. Some workers who do minor tasks like assembling parts trays kits and battery packs already make less than Tier 2, but the UAW will be quite wary about cementing yet another wage scale at the bottom of the system while it's trying to fight a bigger battle at the top. Recharge Wrap-up: KillaJoule hits 270 mph; Mercedes B-Class ED gets PlugShare

Wed, Sep 24 2014

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class Electric Drive will get its own version of the PlugShare charging-station locator app. Developed by Recargo with the help of Daimler, the vehicle-specific app will be integrated into the car's navigation system. The system maps the location of nearby charging stations from various networks. So far, Mercedes-Benz doesn't offer a universal pay service for the various charging networks, like those offered by BMW and Nissan. Read more at Green Car Reports. HyperSolar uses solar energy to make hydrogen from water. Without using electrolyzers, HyperSolar uses a photochemical process to separate and capture the hydrogen in the water, which can then be used for clean energy, such as automotive fuel cells. The solar devices are submerged in water inside a container, and sunlight powers the device to free the hydrogen. HyperSolar claims that its process is more efficient and cost effective than other methods used to produce hydrogen from water. See some demonstrations in the videos below and learn more at HyperSolar's website. Eva Hakansson drove the KillaJoule electric motorcycle to a top speed of 270.224 miles per hour. After a computer model showed a possibility of about 270 mph, the team took the motorcycle with sidecar out to the salt flats for Mike Cook's Shootout. Everything went smoothly, and Hakansson easily surpassed speeds of the 249.1-mph world record she set a few weeks ago. The team is calling it quits for the season, but will make some tweaks to the KillaJoule in hopes of getting 300 mph out of the red bullet next year.
