You are bidding on one of the lowest mileage Mercedes CLK320's remaining. This car has only travelled 26,000-miles from new, always pampered and is in immaculate condition. No smokers ever! I bought this car from an independant dealer who in turn obtained it as a trade-in from the original owner in New Jersey (hence three owners). Between us this car has seen nothing but the highest attention to detail and it shows! Please note that the car is now at my home in Katy, TX - about 30 miles west of Houston.

I have all of the original owner handbooks, original keys and the receipts for the $5,000+ work I have spent on the car since April 2013. In addition the previous seller provided a five page Mercedes VMI (Vehicle Master Inquiry) that appears to capture a car whose work was performed at the Mercedes Dealership from 26th March, 1999 through through end 2011. This particular CLK320 is in immaculate condition presented in a very rare Quartz Blue with Black leather interior. The car is solid, rattle free, in excellent condition and will be sadly missed. The following text is a very honest assessment of the car and it's condition -

  1. Mechanical - as of today the car needs nothing! See my notes below on the $5,000+ work performed since April 2013. Next service due in approximately 5,000-miles (per the onboard computer)
  2. Exterior - there are a two small stone chips on the hood, one on either side of the Mercedes emblem and a very small dent on the rear fender that only just shows up on the photos due to its small size! Otherwise all paint and body panels are original and immaculate! The wheels were remachined by Mercedes and range from excellent (no curb rash) to very good (a couple of small nicks).
  3. Soft Top - immaculate and free from any holes or tears. All hydraulic cylinders are working well and the top raises and lowers as it should.
  4. Interior - Exceptionally clean! No discoloration of seats, wood or interior parts. Carpets are in fantastic condition. This car includes a 100% intact rear wind breaker with all sliding sleeves working well.
  5. Electrical - everything except the one defect noted below works without exception. Radio and CD changer work well, all speakers are in fantastic condition.
  6. Extras - the mobile phone is still inside the car and powers up - the 1G network on which it worked of course no longer exists in the USA (so you can't make calls from the phone). All books, three keys (two original and one new 4th generation key) and receipts for the work I've performed are included.
  7. Known defects - at present the only item that does not work is the multi-contour seat function. This is ran by the same (new) vacuum pump that operates the central locking, which is working fine, so I do not know what has caused the seat contour function to stop working. Note! This is totally separate from the multi-way seat adjustment that works well for both the passenger and drivers sides.
So why am I selling? This is an excellent car and I have thoroughly enjoyed driving it. I have recently bought a new home that only has space for two cars, not three. As the 1999 E55 I have is more practical for my one year old daughter, the CLK sadly has to go!

Why the $17,250 selling price? I bought this car for $16,100 including tax in April of 2013. Since buying the car I have spent more than $5,000 in 'Life Preservation' work to ensure this car is mechanically excellent. That's $21,000 invested and only one year of depreciation. If you are looking at a car that is 14+ years old and was rarely driven, then all fluids and associated items should be replaced or you will be doing it very soon! Sure, you can find a car for less but it will end up costing the same by the time you complete the necessary work. I'm in no rush to sell so sensible offer only please!

Since April 2013 a Mercedes Benz Main Dealer or an Independent Mercedes Benz garage has performed the following work -
  • Replaced Valve Cover Gaskets
  • Replaced Vacuum Pump in the trunk (operates the central locking)
  • Replaced Passenger Door mirror motor
  • Replaced Oil and Filter
  • Replaced Air Filter and Cabin Filter (time consuming one as it is behind the dash)
  • Replaced Fuel Filter
  • Replaced Rear End Fluid
  • Replaced Transmission Fluid and Filter
  • Flushed, cleaned and replaced Coolant System
  • Recharged a/c system
  • Oiled and Lubricated all door locks and convertible hood joints
  • Cleaned and protected all electrical connections
  • Installed new OEM black floor mats
  • Installed new Glove Box Lid catch (the old one looked scratched)
  • Bought new 4th Generation ignition key from Mercedes ($430!!)
  • Bought locking wheel nuts from Mercedes
  • Replaced leaking Rear Deck Lid Soft Top latch and replaced soft top hydraulic fluid at Mercedes ($1,307!)
  • Mercedes re-machined three of the four AMG alloy wheels
  • Bought four new Yokohama YK580 tires ($847) that now have ran 7,000-miles since installation.

Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG formalize technical partnership

Thu, 19 Dec 2013

The development of a partnership between Mercedes-Benz and Aston Martin has been a long time coming. The news dates back to 2008, and over the five years since was supposed to lead to a rejuvenation of both the Maybach and Lagonda brands. That program ultimately fell apart, but the tie-in was forged afresh in July when the two automakers signed a letter of intent over a renewed partnership. And now that partnership has been formalized.
In a deal just announced, Mercedes-AMG will build a new V8 engine for Aston Martin that will power a new generation of luxury GTs for the British marque, presumably to replace the 4.7-liter V8 in the Vantage. The relationship appears to be similar to the one already in place between AMG and Pagani, only in this case, will involve Daimler taking as much as a five-percent stake in Aston Martin and an observer seat on Aston's board.
The technical partnership is also set to lead to the supply of electric and electronic systems, and could incorporate "additional areas of cooperation in the future." Whether that will include a fresh attempt at reviving Lagonda remains to be seen, as does the future of Aston's long-serving, Ford-based 6.0-liter V12 engine. But for now you can read the full announcement below.

Recharge Wrap-up: Porsche 911 hybrid possible, Ecocruise EVs coming soon

Thu, Oct 9 2014

The next-generation Porsche 911 could use hybrid power, according to Porsche CEO Matthias Muller. "There is no reason against it and we will see if we have some reasons to do it," Muller says of the model due around 2018. He also suggests that hybrid technology could eventually make its way into all Porsche model lines, but that the Boxster and Cayman would first get four-cylinder versions. Muller cites carbon emissions and "sportiness" as reasons to use hybrid power, pointing to the 918 Spyder as a good example of both. Read more at Car Advice. A B-Class F-Cell from the Mercedes-Benz fleet has hit a benchmark of 300,000 kilometers (about 186,411 miles) in everyday use. The achievement won Daimler an "f-cell award" for hydrogen fuel cell technology and innovation. The 300+ fuel cell cars in the Daimler fleet have driven a collective 9 million-plus kilometers (more than 5.5 million miles). The information gathered from this testing is being used to improve development as the company looks toward expanding commercialization of fuel cell cars. "We have clearly demonstrated that the fuel cell electric drive is ready for the road," says Professor Herbert Kohler of Daimler. "The last hurdles we will overcome in intensive cross-industry and cross-border teamwork." Read more in the press release below. A company called Ecocruise has new EVs coming out soon. Along with electric scooters and service vehicles, Ecocruise develops street-legal neighborhood electric vehicles like the three-wheeled EZip-3, the four-wheeled EZip-4, and the fun looking Cruser Sport (see a prototype in the video below). The EVs are scheduled to go on sale in January of 2015, which is right around the corner. Ecocruise was started after the founder of Kasea Motorsports decided to switch to electric vehicles with the goal of offering providing affordable emissions-free driving. Learn more about Ecocruise and its vehicles at the company's website. The new EU Fuel Quality Directive (FQD) does little to discourage dirty fuels like tar sands and coal-to-liquid, says Transport & Environment (T&E). The FQD requires suppliers to reduce greenhouse gas intensity for transport fuel in the EU by six percent by 2020. The much-delayed FQD doesn't do as much as it could, though, say critics, and it doesn't label dirtier fuel sources as such despite the urging of scientists. T&E, an organization focused on cleaning up EU transport, blames Canada, the US and Big Oil.

This or That: Mercedes S-Class 350SD vs. 2003 Jaguar XJR [w/poll]

Thu, Mar 26 2015

Budget. It's a wretched word, whether you're going out to eat, shipping for a new outfit or, more relevant to today's discussion, buying a car. Massive marketing machines have convinced us, as a population, to buy the best you can afford, repercussions be damned – If you've saved up some money, spend it! All of it, on whatever it is that currently sits atop your personal Amazon wishlist, be it a Timex that takes a lickin' and keeps on tickin', a $17,000 Gold Apple Watch or a $60,000 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. But what if the best you can afford is... say, $12,815? For that price, you can buy a brand-new 2015 Nissan Versa (including destination), assuming you're happy with zero options and a manual transmission. For that price, you'll get standard air conditioning, a CD player and... well, a warranty. Pretty sensible choice, Captain Frugal. But also ridiculously uninspired. And so that brings us to today's edition of This or That, in which two Autoblog editors pick differing sides of an argument and duke it out to see which one of us can convince you, dear reader, is better. Or at least less wrong. You be the judge. As a refresher, I'm two-and-two on these challenges, having lost the first and second editions before storming back in rounds three and four. Today, as alluded to above, we decided to throw our collective brainpower (oh lord, what have we done?) at what may be the single most difficult question currently confounding the best minds our planet has to offer: What is the best used used luxury car you can buy for the price of a 2015 Nissan Versa? Shall we meet our contenders? Allow me to introduce you to the most perfect luxury car money can buy (assuming the amount of money you're holding is equal to the amount of the cheapest new car currently sold in America, the Nissan Versa). My pick is the 1991 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Not just any S-Class, but the legendary W126, which was produced between 1979 and 1992. And not just any W126, either, but one powered by a 3.5-liter turbodiesel engine. And with that, I send the argument to my esteemed colleague, Associate Editor Chris Bruce. Bruce: Jeremy, we had over $12,000 to budget for this challenge, and the best you can manage is a 24-year-old diesel Mercedes? I love oil-burners as much as any other auto writer with their mountains of torque and huge cruising range, but you're making this too easy on me. Also, you're really choosing a brown, diesel, German luxury sedan?
