Mercedes considering GLA-based crossover coupe

BMW opened a whole Pandora's Box when it introduced the X6 back in 2008. Sure it made little sense, sacrificing all that "utility" for a little more "sport," but it's been a solid success for BMW - especially considering the nominal expense it cost to develop the X6 on top of the X5 on which it's based. Little wonder that, while BMW has already followed up with a smaller version in the form of the X4, other automakers are starting to catch up. And that includes Mercedes-Benz.
The German automaker is preparing to launch a new MLC, based on the M-Class but with a sportier silhouette, and previewed it with the Concept Coupe SUV at the Beijing Motor Show. But that's just the start, according to the latest report from Automotive News Europe.
Mercedes is reportedly considering spinning off an entire line of crossovers more for use on the road than off it. Which may go without saying for most crossovers on the market, but considering the Geländwagen with which Mercedes got its start in SUVs, would mean an even further departure than it has undertaken already.

Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 to debut in Monterey

Mercedes surprised the car world last week when it teased an enormous, Maybach-badged coupe concept. Now we have a name and a debut date. Mercedes released the info in a second teaser image posted to its Facebook page. Called the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 – "Vision" equals concept and "6" denotes the length in meters – the new two-door will debut at Pebble Beach on Thursday. So yeah, here's another reason to get excited about Monterey Car Week. As for the teaser image, it's a head-on shot as opposed to the profile view that Mercedes released last week. The new view supports our theory that the super-skinny mirrors are cameras, and the shot also reveals new styling touches. The most noticeable are the very thin, un-Mercedes-like headlights – they flank a prominent, heavily polished waterfall grille that marks a significant departure from recent Mercedes products. A traditional Mercedes hood ornament sits above the grille's small "Maybach" designation. Kicking up the exposure in Photoshop doesn't reveal too much more detail – unlike last week's profile image – aside from a set of chrome strips that run along the sides of the hood. Autoblog's Monterey Car Week crew ships out for the left coast soon – expect more on the festivities, including the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6's debut, later this week. Mercedes GLE63 AMG Coupe teased

The very concept of the luxury crossover coupe often gets flamed for being not only ugly, but also impractical. However, after years of letting BMW blaze the trail with the X6, Mercedes-Benz recently entered the field with the GLE-Class Coupe. Now, it's time to add a little more pepper to the package with the newly teased GLE63 AMG Coupe. The video above gives a solid look at the three-quarters perspective of this high-performance high-rider. Compared to the standard version buyers get a different front bumper with larger air intakes and an arching wing that almost appears to be floating in space. Flashes in the clip show off AMG branding for the brake calipers, steering wheel and seats, as is expected. This is clearly not a vehicle that'll appeal to everyone, but it offers an alternative to the latest BMW X6 M with 567 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque. Mercedes isn't saying what lies under the hood of the GLE63 AMG Coupe yet. Although given the name, we suspect a version of the brand's 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is the likely choice. It's offered in the latest C63 AMG with either 469 or 503 hp. The debut for this CUV coupe is possible at the upcoming Detroit Auto Show, where the standard GLE Coupe will be unveiled.
