Mercedes' now-internal AMG division has something of a Midas touch with its sedans and coupes, with virtually every model now benefiting from what Hans Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher (the "A" and "M" in AMG, the "G" standing for Aufrecht's birthplace of Grossaspach, Germany) started in 1967. And that's infusing huge amounts of power, rarefied roadholding and visual dazzle into, well, cars that are pretty good to start with. Here, the focus is the C32 AMG, the smallest U.S.-market 4-door Benz that's sort of a miniaturized S-Class in appearance and available features.

In AMG's newly expanded Affalterbach engine factory, producing 100 powerplants a day for the entire AMG range, a single technician is responsible for assembling the C32's Lysholm-supercharged 3.2-liter sohc V-6 that will ultimately produce 349 bhp. That technician literally signs off on the engine, with a plaque bearing his signature affixed to the supercharger housing.

It's a fiercely strong motor, with ripping tip-in torque, a fat midrange and unceasing pull to a somewhat thrashy 6000-rpm redline. It's second-quick in our trio, edged out by a mere tenth in 0-60 and quarter-mile acceleration contests by the BMW, at 5.1 and 13.6 seconds, respectively. That's Porsche 911 territory.

Throw a twisty road in its way and the C32 puts its tires to good use. Press hard and the Benz ultimately settles into safe understeer, albeit at a satisfyingly high level of lateral grip. With the stability control disengaged, a boot-full of throttle will pop the tail out in a predictable manner, easily countered with steering that's a nice balance of isolation and road feedback.  Bailey's take: " You sense that AMG's chassis tuning department is willing to trade a little corner-slicing precision for some real-world civility, and succeeds.

The seats are fantastic. They're aggressively bolstered yet comfortable for widely varying body types, have inserts of perforated leather and earn the highest compliment for canyon driving —

Quick, comfortable, solid, the C32 AMG is a highly desirable machine, Rusz, "A family sedan that wants desperately to be a performance car, the C32 comes darn close to pulling off the ruse."

Customer Comments (Published 07/05/08):

"This car is still a blast to drive. The fuel economy is good for the power available, but it depends on how you drive it. When you want the performance it is there, when you don't it is a fuel sipping V6. I considered getting a new car, but why, this car is still amazing".

"The car is an absolute joy to own/drive. Many people who ride in it can't believe that it is "only a V6." I tested this against the M3 and honestly it just came down to the extra 2 doors. You couldn't go wrong with either one".

"The C32 is a great car to drive. I love the way the car picks up, lots of power to spare. If you get a chance test drive one. You will want to take it home".

"This is the perfect sports sedan for the American road. I have driven and owned 911s and other performance cars, but nothing comes close to the overal package that the C32 presents. The gas economy is GREAT for a performace car; the only faster car in accelleration that I have owned is a 911 twin turbo; it will out handle any sedan I have driven and most sports cars. In addition, despite being 10 inches shorter it has almost as much room inside as a BMW 5 series. If you want a true perfomance sedan that is comparable to an M5 for less money get a C32".

Condition: The Mercedes is in great Shape inside and out. The Exterior paint is in good condition, only some minor scratches which come with age.

The Interior is in great condition with typical wear on the driver and passenger seats, rear seats have a few scruff marks.

Clean Carfax Certified with no previous accidents.

Infiniti went out of its way to make the QX30 not a Mercedes

Thu, Mar 16 2017

You can complain all you want about perceived badge engineering when a company (like Mercedes-Benz) sells a platform to another brand (such as Infiniti). The reality is that most buyers won't know the difference, and they won't even realize their Infiniti is really a Mercedes underneath or that their neighbor's GLA has the same basic parts as the QX30 they just bought. What's weird to me isn't that sameness, but the places where the two cute little utes differ. These two vehicles, which are more like tall hatchbacks, use the same Mercedes 2.0-liter turbo four and seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Infiniti adds its own throttle and transmission calibrations. The suspension design is the same, although there are tuning differences. Both come standard with front-wheel drive, with all-wheel drive an option. Fuel economy matches for the FWD models, while the AWD Infiniti lags behind the Mercedes for some reason. So they're very similar despite their different looks. And design makes sense as a point of differentiation. Frankly, they go further than a lot of vehicles on shared platforms do – further, in fact, than the upcoming Nissan Navara-based Mercedes X-Class pickup does. The QX30 has its own sheetmetal and glass to separate it from the GLA-class. You probably think one looks better than the other. If you know where to look, the signs of sameness are obvious. Most major systems and pieces are shared, like the steering wheels (with different center covers), most switchgear, and things like interior and exterior door handles. Shared parts are fine as long as the parts are good ones. On that note, how many Tesla buyers realize their steering column and stalks, plus the window switches, come from Mercedes? And does that actually matter? We'd argue no. About those differences. Many are functional, like the fact the Infiniti does not carry over the Benz's Brake Hold feature – when you roll to a stop in the GLA (or any other Benz), pressing the brake pedal firmly applies the electric parking brake until you hit the gas to move again. The QX30 has an electric parking brake, but no Brake Hold feature. Someone used to driving Mercedes models will look a bit silly standing on the brake pedal to no effect. Ask us how we know. The Mercedes gauge package is carried over, but with the Infiniti font. Makes sense, although it's off-putting at first if you've seen the original, prompting a weird deja vu. Circular dash vents are replaced by rhomboid ones.

Weekly Recap: Takeaways from the Frankfurt Motor Show

Sat, Sep 19 2015

We obsessively covered the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show, and naturally, we selected our favorites from this fall's biggest automotive event. Now that the dust has settled, we're looking ahead to what it all means. Here are three takeaways from the floor in Frankfurt. The Germans are serious about electric vehicles: It's a bit cliche to say BMW, Mercedes, and Audi have downplayed electrics in favor of other technologies, like diesels. For a time that may have been true, but those three companies, along with Porsche and Volkswagen, are emerging as leaders in EV development. That was on display in Frankfurt, when all of them revealed either all-electric or plug-in hybrid models. Gas prices are relatively low in the United States, but clearly the Germans are thinking long-term and globally. Everyone is serious about SUVs: You gotta have one, even if you're Bentley or Jaguar. It's 2015 and it's what consumers want. As Jaguar design director Ian Callum put it, "Not to be in the sector would be a little naive for the sake of purity." It's not just the flashy exotic luxury makers. Nissan showed the Gripz concept, which is rakish, radical, and meant to blend traits of SUVs and sports cars into a vehicle that really crosses over. Look for more, especially in the luxury sector, as Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, and Aston Martin ramp up their own SUV efforts. There's no ceiling to the luxury market: Speaking of high-end cars, companies are continuing to invest in extravagant wares beyond just SUVs. Even during the recession, ultra-luxury makers remained relevant, and now they're back at full stride. In Frankfurt, that was illustrated by yet another S-Class model, the cabriolet, which will come in S550 and S63 AMG variants in the United States. Ferrari also showed off the 488 Spider, and Lamborghini opened up the Huracan LP 610-4 Spyder. Meanwhile, Bugatti's Vision Grand Turismo concept reminded enthusiasts that it's plotting life after the Veyron. European auto shows always draw the glitziest reveals from luxury makers, and this year didn't disappoint. OTHER NEWS & NOTES 2016 Honda Civic redesigned with snazzier style, turbo power The 10th-generation of the Honda Civic debuted this week at events in Los Angeles and Detroit ahead of its launch in the United States this fall as a 2016 model. Honda fortified the Civic with LED lights, an available turbo engine, and a more tech-laden cabin.

Here's how Detroit is selling more luxury vehicles than Germany and Japan

Sun, Dec 14 2014

Now there's an attention-grabbing headline, eh? Although the answer to the riddle - pickup trucks and SUVs - might be somehow deflating, the numbers involved deserve a going over. According to TrueCar's figures (click on the table to enlarge), six of the year's ten best-selling vehicles in the US that sell for a transaction price above $50,000 are body-on-frame, and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the only foreigner to crack the top five. Every enthusiast knows that pickup trucks are 'Murica's most popular vehicle by a colossal margin, and there have been plenty of reports about the popularity of luxuriously appointed trucks and SUVs, but compare these figures from TrueCar: 70 percent of Chevrolet Tahoe sales have a transaction price above $50K, and The Bowtie is expected to make $3.9 billion in revenue on 66,945 predicted high-dollar sales; 95.1 percent of E-Class sales break $50K, so the German company will make $4.0 billion on 67,006 predicted sales in that pricing sphere. It's about the only time you'll see the Tahoe ranked right next to Mercedes' bread-and-butter sedan. Ram is ahead of those two with $4.2B coming from $50K-plus sales. The Ford F-Series does almost as much revenue as the next three combined, with an expected $10.8 billion coming from sales of trucks over $50K - more than a quarter of the model's total sales, when a base F-150 can be had for about $26,000. Yes, the Germans make a lot more money on fewer sales, but considering the comparison, the bottom line isn't too troubled by such facts. Weighing like-for-like, the full-size Ford walks it in every category; elsewhere, the Chevrolet Silverado outsells the Ram, but the Ram outsells the Chevy by 6.7 percent above $50K. And for all the flak GMC takes over swapping out grilles, the Sierra also outsells the Chevy in the well-appointed segment, 16.1 percent of sales versus 11 percent – the Professional Grade brand is a huge profit center for The General. You'll find more info in the TrueCar press release below. TrueCar finds pickup trucks far outsell premium brands among top 10 vehicles over $50,000 Ford F-Series pickup sales over $50,000 surpass combined BMW 3, 5, 7 Series luxury car sales SANTA MONICA, Calif. (December 10, 2014) - TrueCar, Inc., the negotiation-free car buying and selling platform, finds mainstream pickup trucks and sport-utility vehicles dominate U.S.
