The C43 was by far the most powerful car in its class, the C43 AMG can truly be considered a 4-door muscle car. New camshafts and free-breathing, large-diameter intake and exhaust systems increase the peak output to 302 horsepower.
APPEARANCE: The C43 is relatively stealthy for a high-performance car. Differences in appearance between it and the other C-Class cars are minimal. The 17-inch AMG alloy wheels are the most obvious, but are the same basic design as the 16-inch wheels that are part of the Sport Package available on the C280 and C230K. Deeper, more sculpted front and rear lower bumper fascias and matching rocker panels are not all that obvious. The "AMG" and "C43" badging on the trunk lid will be read only by accomplished speed readers. Other C-Class Benzes, however, do not have the twin chrome-tipped AMG-badged exhausts producing a deep V8 rumble.

COMFORT: The C43 does differ from the other C-Class members inside, again thanks to AMG. Special heated sports seats incorporating pneumatic lumbar, side, and thigh support, and the thick-rimmed, leather-covered steering wheel are designed for serious driving. This car has the two-tone, black and silver, interior color scheme, with silver inserts in the seating areas. They look and feel great. Black-on-white instruments with AMG badging are also unique to the C43. Other interior features are pretty much standard C-Class, including room for four adults and a large, useful trunk.

SAFETY: The C43 has the full complement of Mercedes-Benz safety equipment, including safety cage chassis construction, and front side air bags. Active safety is enhanced by strong antilock brakes with Brake Assist emergency stopping assistance, all-speed traction control, and ESP stability control.

ROADABILITY: Thanks to the very firm and well-controlled AMG-tuned suspension and monstrous contact patch of the 225/45 x 17"front and 245/40 x 17" rear tires, the C43 sticks to the pavement extremely well, with excellent handling characteristics. Powerful, short-wheelbase cars can be tricky to keep in control, but the C43 is stable and assured. Huge vented, antilock brakes at all four wheel sensors near-race car stopping ability. The C43 is not harsh or uncomfortable, and is as well-suited to a (quick) run to the grocery store as it is to performance driving.

PERFORMANCE: Although the 4.3-liter V8 is basically the same asthat used in other Benzes, internal modifications by AMG result in 302 horsepower and 302 lb-ft of torque. A near back-to-back comparison with the CLK430, which has the stock, 275-horsepower version of the same engine, was most enlightening. If the C43 has only 27 more horsepower, they're large horses. There is enormous power immediately, and it never fades. The 5-speed automatic transmission mitigates the power's effect when shifting, helping stability and undoubtedly prolonging tire life. The engine produces a most satisfying, muscular V8 roar.

Car subscription services: A slow, expensive start — but the potential is huge

Wed, Dec 26 2018

Americans are used to paying for subscriptions — to magazines and cable television, for instance — but experience shows they'll cancel when the price of admission gets too high, or there are more tempting alternatives. Cord cutters ditched nearly 1.5 million pay-TV subscriptions in 2017, according to a survey by Leichtman Research Group. Cable TV started out cheap with basic offerings, and then got expensive. The auto industry's subscription offerings are new, but they're starting out costly, and not price-competitive with traditional leasing. The upside is that they take the hassle out of car ownership for busy people by letting the service take care of maintenance, insurance, licensing and taxes. And they give consumers choice, often allowing relatively painless switches between different cars in the automakers' lineup. Subscription services also point the way toward an ownership-free auto experience, and offer an easy transition to a potential world where ride- and car-sharing will be dominant. Subscriptions are here to stay, but consumers may take a while to "get" them. Lincoln's subscription service for lightly used 2015 to 2017 models, offered through the Ford-owned Canvas beginning this year, got off to a slow start. Many early subscribers canceled. Last month, Cadillac announced it would " temporarily pause" its $1,800-per-month Book subscription service for "adjustments" as of December 1. According to the Wall Street Journal, "Snags with the back-end technology used to support the service made some customer-service functions tedious and time-consuming, adding costs for the company." The challenge for automakers is to come up with a strategy that offers consumers a compelling, affordable option to regular ownership, and one that can also make a profit. I think they'll find that sweet spot, but they're not there yet. Jack Nerad, former executive editorial director at Kelley Blue Book and author of " The Complete Idiot's Guide to Buying or Leasing a Car," points out that "A lot of people expected that subscriptions would be very valuable for people who wanted inexpensive transportation, but the reality is quite the opposite. Subscriptions are offering more choices for the wealthy.

F1 Race recap: 2016 Russian Grand Prix same as it ever was

Mon, May 2 2016

The three-year-old Sochi Autodrom that hosts the Russian Grand Prix combines beautiful scenery with a hallmark turn 3, a tricky turn 13, and two long DRS zones. So far, however, those haven't added up to exciting races after the first lap. Despite an in-race issue with his car's MGU-K, Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg aced the weekend with his first career grand slam: pole position, fastest lap of the race, leading every lap, and victory. Behind him, not much happened on the leaderboard after an incident-filled opening lap. The drama started at turns 2 and 3. Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel lined up in seventh on the grid because of a five-place gearbox penalty, Red Bull's Daniil Kvyat sat next to him in eighth. Kvyat hit the back of Vettel's Ferrari in the braking zone for Turn 2, shoving Vettel into Daniel Ricciardo – Kvyat's teammate. Kyvat then clobbered the back of Vettel's car at the entry to Turn 3, spinning the German into the wall and out of the race. Kvyat probably regrets saying before the race that he would show Vettel "no mercy" on the first lap. At the back of the grid at Turn 2, Haas F1's Esteban Gutierrez hit Force India's Nico Hulkenberg and Manor's Rio Haryanto. Gutierrez continued, both the Force India and the Manor retired. A brief Virtual Safety Car period ensued, then the actual Safety Car emerged for three laps while marshals cleaned up the track. Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver Nico Rosberg nailed the restart and took off for the rest of the race. Teammate Lewis Hamilton battled his own gremlins all weekend but still finished second, 25 seconds behind Rosberg. During the final qualifying session on Saturday Hamilton's car suffered the same MGU-H failure as in China two weeks ago. The problem relegated him to tenth on the grid. In the race, Hamilton fought his way to second place by Lap 19 out of 53 laps and began closing the 13-second gap to Rosberg. On Lap 37, the gap now under eight seconds, Mercedes told Hamilton his car had a water pressure issue. The malfunction forced the Briton to manage his race and settle for second. Afterward, Hamilton said he was certain he could have won if not for the malfunction. The rest of the top ten barely changed throughout the contest. The first five positions on Lap 21 crossed the finish line in that order 32 laps later. Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen took the final podium position ahead of the Williams duo of Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa.
