Mercedes-AMG GT S pit against Porsche 911 Turbo in Evo Deadly Rivals test

When Mercedes-Benz announced that its all-new AMG GT would start at $129,900 deeply undercutting the $200,000-plus of its predecessor, the SLS AMG, immediate questions focused on how it'd stack up against the latest crop of high performers that occupy the mid-$100,000 range. Evo, over in the UK, didn't have to wait all that long. The latest installment in the outlet's "Deadly Rivals" series compares the AMG GT with the latest Porsche 911 Turbo. On paper, the test is sure to be interesting. The Mercedes uses a 4.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 with 503 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque, while a seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch shuffles power to the back axle. The 911 Turbo's formula is more of a known quantity – 520 hp from a twin-turbo, 3.8-liter flat six with the company's own PDK working in unison with all-wheel drive, torque vectoring and rear-axle steering. Ferrari, Mercedes selling cars with faulty Takata airbags

According to the US Senate, a small group of automakers are still selling new cars with faulty Takata airbags. Automotive News reports that Ferrari's entire lineup and various Mercedes-Benz vehicles come with faulty airbags and are subject to being recalled by the end of 2018. US Senator Bill Nelson, (D-FL), claims the affected Ferrari models include: the 2016 to 2017 FF, California T, F12 Berlinetta, F12 TdF, 488 GTB, 488 Spider, and GTC4 Lusso. Mercedes-Benz is also in the mix with the 2016 Sprinter and 2016 to 2017 E-Class Coupe and Convertible. Automotive News reports that both Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz will require its dealers to notify buyers of a recall in the vehicles' future. The National Highway traffic Safety Administration claims the vehicles are legal to be sold, as the airbags are safe until exposed to high humidity for a significant period of time. With the majority of Ferrari drivers storing their vehicles in temperature-controlled garages, this shouldn't be troubling news. What is troubling, however, is that seven out of 17 automakers that Senator Nelson contacted admitted to putting defective Takata airbags into its new cars. Volkswagen, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and Toyota are a few automakers that still use Takata's faulty airbags. All have agreed to notify buyers of future recalls. Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 to debut in Monterey

Mercedes surprised the car world last week when it teased an enormous, Maybach-badged coupe concept. Now we have a name and a debut date. Mercedes released the info in a second teaser image posted to its Facebook page. Called the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 – "Vision" equals concept and "6" denotes the length in meters – the new two-door will debut at Pebble Beach on Thursday. So yeah, here's another reason to get excited about Monterey Car Week. As for the teaser image, it's a head-on shot as opposed to the profile view that Mercedes released last week. The new view supports our theory that the super-skinny mirrors are cameras, and the shot also reveals new styling touches. The most noticeable are the very thin, un-Mercedes-like headlights – they flank a prominent, heavily polished waterfall grille that marks a significant departure from recent Mercedes products. A traditional Mercedes hood ornament sits above the grille's small "Maybach" designation. Kicking up the exposure in Photoshop doesn't reveal too much more detail – unlike last week's profile image – aside from a set of chrome strips that run along the sides of the hood.
