This 1992 Mercedes-Benz 600SEL is truly an intriguing automobile. Rare from birth - being the first V12 engine sedan Mercedes-Benz ever created - this soon-to-be classic example of Mercedes engineering stands apart from its peers due to its impeccable original condition and alleged storied past. Its sticker price in 1992 is the inflation adjusted equivalent today of nearly $250,000!!!

This unique beauty has obviously lived a pampered existence its entire life SPANNING ONLY 99,446 ORIGINAL MILES!!! It clearly shows. You will be hard pressed to find a lower mileage, unmolested 1992 “V12.”

I am the third owner of the vehicle, and I was lucky enough to be successful in uncovering its alleged past upon purchasing the vehicle just over a year ago. Before acquiring my 600SEL, the Memphis dealership provided me with the name of the previous owner – a Memphis doctor who was a car buff, collected several rare Mercedes, and enjoyed racing Porsches as a hobby. Upon contacting the doctor, he confirmed that he had lovingly owned the car for over eleven years and replaced/repaired a countless number of parts on the vehicle during his ownership. He also told me that he had actually traded the car in roughly 1.5 years previously.  The dealer confirmed this and admitted that it had used the car as a management vehicle while maintaining it in inventory. What the doctor additionally told me was quite interesting.

The Memphis doctor was friends with a Hollywood motion picture executive of a rather high order. This friend was apparently involved with the Gone in Sixty Seconds franchise and had allowed the use of his 600SEL in the filming of various interior shot scenes of “Johnny B”’s car. After filming, the Hollywood friend had decided to part with the car, and he in turn sold it to his doctor friend in Memphis. This is of course all word of mouth, but I believe this all to be relatively accurate.

Since purchasing my 600SEL, I have spent countless hours and an inordinate amount of money to keep this vehicle in tip-top shape. It’s been a true labor of love. The vehicle is one of the most remarkable automobiles I have ever had the pleasure of piloting, and the exclusive club of people that have shared the privilege would undoubtedly say the same.

The technology and creature comforts that this car possesses is truly impressive provided its 22+ year age. Close to everything works! It has dual airbags, traction control, anti-lock brakes, power tilt/sliding sunroof, adjustable sport/comfort suspension, active button-controlled charcoal air filtration, power rear sunshade, power tilt/telescopic steering wheel, power adjustable interior rear view mirror, power folding exterior rear view mirrors, power operated rear parking guidance rods, 4-door power assist closing doors, dual climate control, dual paned glass, individually adjustable rear seats, heated 3 position memory and orthopedically adjusting front seats, a concert sound system, in-dash telephone system, lighted rear seat vanity mirrors, and the list goes on. I have also installed a Pioneer Avic-3 audio unit with navigation, traffic update, and rear view camera ability.

The paint is original, and while not without imperfections, shines brilliantly due to its consistent garaged state. Living in the mild, California climate for nearly half of its life, and the mild Memphis climate for the rest, the vehicle is rust free. The black leather interior is beautiful. The nicely preserved, original burled walnut wood shines brilliantly and looks great with the exception of some cracking on the shifter console area.

The bad news is that that vehicle has recently entered “Limp Mode.” The car will start but appears to only be running on half of its power. It will only respond to throttle beyond half-peddle, and even then, the car is not suitable for daily travel given its illness. Mercedes-Benz of Memphis has analyzed the car and suggested replacing the dual ignition caps and rotors to the tune of $1,500 plus tax. However, I have reached my fiscal limits with the car and decided that I have spent enough on this beautiful creature already. It is eagerly awaiting a new owner – one that possesses the dream to own what is surely destined to become one of the most collectable Mercedes this side of a M100 engined 6.3 vintage. It deserves to be restored to its true glory, and my sincerest wish is that someone will give it a chance.

Detailed Issues: Engine Limp Mode, cracking center console wood, broken hood release handle (chord still can be pulled open though), power trunk closer not closing completely, power aerial antenna broken off, chipping paint on front bumper.

Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions you may have. I will be more than happy to provide further information. Thank you very much for your interest.

2016 Canadian Grand Prix: A tale of 3 starts and 2 stops

Mon, Jun 13 2016

The first curve in the Canadian Formula 1 Grand Prix happened before Turn 1. Lewis Hamilton sat on pole in the Mercedes-AMG Petronas, Sebastian Vettel in a Ferrari behind. That order changed as soon as the lights went out. Hamilton and teammate Nico Rosberg started well enough, but Vettel flew off the line, passing Hamilton in just a few meters. Vettel led through Turn 1 while Hamilton defended against Rosberg trying to pass on the outside by using the entire track. Hamilton bumped his teammate, sending Rosberg into the concrete runoff with an " infuriating but fair" maneuver Hamilton blamed on understeer. The Brit stayed second, his teammate fell to ninth by the time he rejoined the circuit and got back on the gas. The Ferrari finally looked an even match for the Mercedes, Vettel slowly building a gap out front. On Lap 11 the Honda in Jenson Button's McLaren self-ignited just after the hairpin, forcing Button to pull over on the Casino Straight. A Virtual Safety Car slowed the field, convincing Ferrari to pit its drivers. Vettel came in, handing the lead to Hamilton. The marshals cleared Button's car more quickly than expected, so the scuderia didn't get the full time advantage it expected, sending Vettel back on track seven seconds behind the Mercedes. Button's and Ferrari's unplanned stops decided the race. Ferrari had always planned to run a two-stopper, but the early pit didn't give the team a chance to gauge the ultra-soft Pirelli. The ultra-softs lasted longer than anyone expected. Hamilton only pitted once, Vettel had to pit again, and the Ferrari simply couldn't close the gap to the Mercedes even with newer tires. Post-race commentary accused Ferrari of two blunders: giving up track position, and not taking advantage of Mercedes' only known weakness of not being nearly as good in dirty air. If the ultra-softs had fallen off a performance cliff, however, Ferrari's play would have been considered daring and brilliant. Hamilton took his second win of the season, followed by a hard-driving Vettel five seconds later. Valtteri Bottas and Williams got everything right, the Finn taking advantage of a one-stop strategy, a perfectly-timed pit stop, and more unusual Red Bull issues to finish third. It's Williams' first podium of the year. Max Verstappen claimed fourth after two pit stops, holding off a frustrated Rosberg who had to make an unscheduled stop to remedy a slow puncture.
