Up for sale is a wide body 1988 Mercedes 560sec AMG.  I acquired this car recently in payment of a debt and don't know a lot about it. I do, however, know that the body on this car is extremely rare and I have never seen another car like it in my life.  I will do my best to provide as much information as possible, and can try to answer any questions you may have to the best of my ability. I cannot validate whether or not this is a genuine AMG Mercedes, or weather or not the body on it is original AMG. I know of no way to find this out, and it is the buyers responsibility to do all research on this issue before purchase.

The car has a clean Ohio title. The instrument cluster was missing when I received the car, so I inserted a spare that I had from another car, but it is not the original cluster, and it has over 200k on the odometer, as seen in the pictures.

The body/frame/chassis is what is being sold here.  In no way should somebody think they are buying a car that is drivable.  This car has no engine or transmission, or much of anything left in the engine bay.  It is bare, but very clean.  The interior seems to have been mostly removed at some point, as there are several loose pieces of interior trim. It seems like it is all there, but again, items like the dash, console, carpets, etc. are not secured in place fully.  The trunk has several extra pieces of trim and carpet that will be included. I do not know, unfortunately, why the original engine and transmission, interior, and other parts were removed in the first place. Pictures of anything that seems significant are posted.  If you require specific photos you do not see, please contact me and I will send them to you.

Everything on/in the car is included in the auction and will be sold as-is.  Meaning that every piece of carpet, plastic, etc.  that I have for this car will be included. In addition, the 20" wheels and nearly new tires shown are included so the vehicle can be moved.  They match the body nicely in size and shape, and have a nice deep dish that fits this car perfectly.

The overall quality of the body and paint is very good.  There are a few small imperfections in the rear bumper, and a damaged area about 3 inches long on the passenger front fender, with a hairline crack in the fiberglass in that area extending a bit beyond the damaged area.  The rest of the body is in really nice shape.  The vehicle is in the exact condition I received it in (other than adding a instrument cluster), and will be sold that way.  I haven't the heart or skill for a project like this, or I would already be driving it.

I can try to assist the buyer with loading the vehicle on a trailer, tow truck, shipping truck, etc., but all arrangements must be made by the buyer. Please contact me with any questions or to set up an appointment to inspect it. I should be able to respond to any inquiries within a few hours.  Thanks for looking!

2015 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 Quick Spin [w/video]

Fri, Aug 28 2015

We car writers tend to have a occupationally limited focus. Autoblog's stock in trade is automotive news and new car reviews, which often steers us towards forgetting existing models about 17 minutes after we've driven it a second time. You guys like reading about the new hotness, too, so it tends to work out. But the wonderful fact is that every car sold today will have a rich/interesting/heroic/tragic life for years to come. And, occasionally, even obsolete makes and models stay interesting. That was my thinking when this 2015 Mercedes-Benz SLK250 came into our fleet. Set to be replaced with the SLK300, with that car's 2.0-liter turbo'd engine, the 250 is already running out the clock in Mercedes dealerships. What's more, my test car came complete with – are you ready for this? – a six-speed manual transmission. I can't tell you the last exact model of Benz that I'd driven with a stick shift, but I can assure you that its engine was carbureted. Considering the odd spec and replacement timeline, my question, as I drove the SLK for a week: was this a unicorn destined to be a driver's dearest find? Driving Notes: Let me not bury the lede any more: the six-speed isn't a game changer for the SLK. Yeah, over the course of a few days I came to be comfortable with the slightly vague clutch and notchy shifter, but I didn't love it. I went blasting on a few back roads, and found the hand-shaker more involving to use than the standard auto, but it was long to throw and not overly precise when I moved up and down between second, third, and fourth. On the other hand, the old 1.8T under the SLK250's bonnet still felt well matched with the base SLK's boulevardier mission. Output of 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque doesn't give enough gumption to move the hardtop German lump with authority, but it was still enough to be quick off the line and offer easy highway passing. The turbo four didn't sound bad under full throttle, either, but it did rattle like old plumbing when idling in the driveway. Speaking of rattling: the adjustable and Airscarf-equipped seats did a lot of it. (Airscarf, you'll recall, is M-B's brand name for an in-seat fan that blows hot air on your neck; it's nice on a cold day.) Though comfortable and mildly bolstered, the driver's chair made all kinds of funny noises when I got in, got out, or cornered over 20 miles per hour. That's rough for a luxury car with 6,000 (or so) miles on it.

Experience the New York Auto Show by drone

Fri, Apr 10 2015

The Autoblog team recently returned from wildly running around the Javits Center to cover all the news and debuts at the New York Auto Show. Sometimes, it's nice to take a more serene look at the exhibition floor, though, and the event's organizers are providing that exact opportunity by flying a drone through the hall. Combined with the down-tempo music, this clip feels like a form of automotive meditation. If you're going to miss the show in the Big Apple, the drone also provides a good overview at the exhibition floor, especially at the stands from Lexus, Buick, Dodge, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and BMW. Plus, it's a fun way to see some vehicles from a completely different angle than they ever appear on the road. 2013 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT Coupe

Thu, 31 Jan 2013

Mercedes-Benz upgraded its SLS flagship Coupe and Roadster for the 2013 model year, and the changes are marked with them new "GT" nomenclature. Both SLS models arrive with a retuned naturally aspired 6.2-liter V8 delivering 583 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque (the horses are up from 563, but the torque remains the same) mated to a revised seven-speed AMG Speedshift dual-clutch gearbox. Rounding out the mechanical upgrades is a redeveloped AMG two-mode adaptive suspension. Physically, the revised models are differentiated by their new "GT" badging, darkened headlight/taillight buckets, red brake calipers, unique wheel colors and high gloss finish on the front grille, exterior mirrors and hood/fender fins. Inside the cabin are new red seatbelts, Alcantara upholstery and contrasting red stitching.
As it is nearly impossible to experience the aluminum gullwing beast on public roads, Mercedes invited out to Southern California's Willow Springs to wring out the 2013 SLS GT Coupe on a racing circuit.
