THE OVERVIEW
Offered for an appreciating new owner is this rare classic 1977 Mercedes Benz 450SLC!
Finished in beautiful original color light silvery blue over navy, this blue license plate California car has been driven just 65,700 miles since new. The six-digit odometer works [and did when I acquired it]. This four passenger coupe version of the more available 450Sl sports the 4/5 liter V8 engine mated to a three spe3ed automatic transmission with four-wheel disc brakes, electric sunroof and windows, working factory fog lamps and more. This 450SLC is being sold with clear and clean California title ONLY to non-California buyer. This is a beautiful classic find for about the cost of the sales tax alone on a new SL350!

PLEASE CALL 650-307-2251 FOR QUESTIONS, TEST DRIVES AND/OR MECHANICAL INSPECTIONS

THE BODY AND TRIM
The exterior of this 450SLC is in VERY NICE overall
condition! The paint is deep, lustrous and downright stunning with only a few isolated blemishes including a corroding spot under the front badge which needs to be reattached, along with two other little paint bubbling areas and a couple very small rock nicks and scrapes. The original chrome trim is very presentable, the wheel covers have some light fading, the tires are in fair condition and the louvered vent pieces have peeling paint. I would rate the exterior a solid 8.5 on a scale of 1-10.

THE INTERIOR
The interior of this classic Benz is in fair to good condition overall. All of the gauges including the odometer, speedometer, tach, oil pressure, temperature works as they should including the blinkers, lights, horn windows [all four] and sunroof. The radio does not power up and the hvac seems to be stuck blowing a little heat with a/c inop. The door panels and headliner are nice while the two front seats and top of rear seat need redoing. The dash has some heat cracking and the carpets are tattered on driver side.

THE DRIVING EXPERIENCE
This classic Benz starts well with a good strong engine that could use a tuneup. There is no smoking or dripping. The transmission up and downshifts well though reverse is sluggish, the suspension is smooth and supple with no clunks, rattles or shakes and the braking is smooth and true. Thirty seven years later this is a still a very nice solid driving motor car!

Mercedes-AMG planning more hardcore A45 hot hatch

Mon, Nov 24 2014

The launch of the A45 AMG marked Mercedes-Benz's first real assault on the premium hot hatch segment. And with 355 horsepower from a 2.0-liter turbo four, it is indeed hot. But the latest word has it that Mercedes-AMG is planning an even hotter version. Speaking with Auto Express at the LA Auto Show last week, AMG boss Tobias Moers indicated that his department was toying with the idea of a more hardcore version of the A45. In what Moers referred to as a "street fighter," the A45's engine would be tuned to produce even more power, the cabin stripped out and the rolling stock, brakes and aero upgraded for more serious performance. Think of it, then, as something of a Black Series approach, only it's not expected to carry that name, which has historically been reserved specifically for two-door models. Given AMG's current list of priorities and limited manpower, though, Moers suggests it will be several years – likely towards the end of the model's life cycle – before it may prepare such a model, following a similar formula to the Mini JCW GP and Renaultsport Megane R26.R. Here's hoping an American version based on the CLA could also be in the cards.

VW joins Daimler's protest of new A/C refrigerant as EU deadline for compliance passes

Sun, 06 Jan 2013

The case of Dupont and Honeywell's refrigerant R-1234yf is doing the exact opposite of keeping things cool. The two chemical companies have spent years and hundreds of millions of dollars developing R-1234yf to replace R-134a, the new refrigerant shown to be 99.7-percent kinder to the environment than the one it is meant to succeed. Part of that development has been years of testing by governments, outside safety agencies and automakers to approve the chemical for use in cars. It passed the protocols necessary for the European Union to declare that new and significantly revised cars from 2013 onward needed to use R-1234yf, and mandated that every car as of 2017 must use it.
Enter Daimler AG. The automaker created a head-on collision test with a B-Class at their Sindelfingen test track that would lead to the pressurized refrigerant being sprayed on the engine. The result in 20 out of 20 test was that the refrigerant burst into flames as soon as it hit the hot engine, while Daimler says that R-134a does not catch fire in the same test. Another unexpected result of the R-1234yf test was the release of hydrogen flouride, a chemical far more deadly to humans than hydrogen cyanide, emitted in such amounts that it that turned the windshield white as it began to eat into the glass.
Said a Daimler engineer in a Reuters piece, "It was scarcely believable. The most complicated lab tests conducted using the most sensitive measuring instruments around found nothing and all we do is drive a car around a couple of times, open a tiny hole in the refrigerant line and the next thing you know the car is on fire." So Daimler said it wouldn't use the refrigerant, and it recalled the cars it had already shipped with R-1234yf.

Artist imagines eerie world where cars have no wheels

Thu, 24 Jan 2013

The wheel ranks right up there with the telescope and four-slice toaster in the pantheon of inventions that have moved humankind forward. But what if a circle in three dimensions had never occurred to anyone, and we all had just moved on without it? Perhaps we'd be driving around in Lucas Motors Landspeeders with anti-gravity engines. Or maybe we'd have the same cars we do today, just without wheels.
That's the thought experiment that seems to have led French photographer Renaud Marion to create his six-image series called Air Drive. The shots depict cars throughout many eras of motoring that look normal except for one thing: they have no wheels. The models used include a Jaguar XK120, Cadillac DeVille (shown above), Chevrolet El Camino and Camaro, and Mercedes-Benz SL and 300 roadsters.
Perhaps one day when our future becomes our past, you'll be able to walk the street and see with your own eyes the rust and patina of age on our nation's fleet of floating cars. Until then, Monsieur Marion's photographs will have to do.
