On Aug-14-14 at 14:31:51 PDT, seller added the following information: This vehicle was owned by my father who left to me. He stopped work on it due to his health. I need to sell it as is because I have no place to store it, want to pay insurance or have the skills to work on it myself. I believe my father purchased the car in Florida several years ago and had it shipped to Alabama. It was stored in a garage most of the time and driven in parades. I recently replaced the tires. The paint is very good for a vehicle of this age but it does have a couple of blemishes as pointed out in the photos and some of the black trim has faded. The interior has normal wear and tear for vehicle of this age. Power windows don't work but could just be a fuse. Defroster works but A/C does not. Radio and CD player appear to be aftermarket and in ok condition. The soft top is good with no holes or tears. There is no hard top. Odometer works and has number of miles shown plus 100k to my knowledge. The car is drive-able as is and I try to drive it to town and back occasionally to keep battery charged. It can be enjoyed as is or would be a good project for someone who wants to continue restoration. |

US buyers show little interest in big hybrids
Sat, May 10 2014The idea of producing large, luxury-vehicle hybrids is turning into a "what were they thinking?" exercise in futility, USA Today reports. General Motors is discontinuing hybrid versions of the Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs, while Mercedes-Benz and Toyota's Lexus division are doing the same with their S-Class hybrid and LS hybrid sedans, respectively. The culprit? Big price increases for fuel economy improvements that border on the unimpressive. Granted, the Escalade hybrid gets 31 percent better fuel economy than the standard version, but that still maps out to a combined fuel-efficiency rating of just 21 miles per gallon. That can be seen as a worthwhile increase, if it didn't cost over $8,000 extra. The 2014 Escalade Hybrid, for example, starts at $74,425 while the non-hybrid can be had for $66,295. Meanwhile, the Lexus full-size hybrid costs $6,000 more than the regular version but only gets 1-2 mpg better combined fuel economy. The result of all these high costs? Low sales. Through April, GM sold 82 of its hybrid SUVs and pickups, down from 541 a year earlier. And the LS hybrid sales were in single-digit territory for April. That isn't stopping Lexus from promoting its hybrids as the right solution (with the wrong facts), though. There are still automakers giving big hybrid vehicles a shot, though. Nissan's Infiniti division is selling a hybrid version of its QX60 and says an impressive 10 percent of QX60 buyers choose the hybrid, which costs just $3,000 more. Looks like money talks. Online Find of the Day: Lexus-engined Mercedes pickup is a vintage hybrid
Tue, 16 Sep 2014You have to love someone who gets incredibly committed to a very weird idea. What you see for sale here is a right-hand drive 1971 Mercedes-Benz 220D in South Africa, but this old Mercedes is now converted into a pickup, complete with bed cover, and there's big secret under the hood, too.
The pickup conversion appears well done based on seller Sedgefield Classic Cars' photos. Even the tonneau cover fits well. You could almost believe that this Mercedes lived its life as a Chevrolet El Camino-like pickup from the very beginning.
However, the rear-quarters conversion might not be the weirdest thing about this Mercedes. The original diesel is gone from the engine bay in favor of a Lexus V8. It seems really odd to pop the hood and find a Japanese mill in this German car, but the photos make it look like a fairly well performed swap. So, bravo to the crazy thinking. According to the seller speaking to Autoblog by email, "as far as we can establish, this was done a few years ago, with all Lexus components."
