Neat car with distinct character. These coupes are masterpieces of design and mechanics, and the rarest version (this is one of less than 10,000 produced) of Mercedes' legendary w123 chassis line. This car has the naturally aspirated (non-turbocharged) 3.0 L OM617 Straight-5 Cyl. Diesel engine.
Made in 1979, this 34 year old car can still be driven as is, but would benefit from some repairs. There is a leak in the cylinder head gasket, so a partial engine rebuild would be necessary to restore the optimal engine compression and performance.  There is an audible noise, a short exhaust note, when the engine is running.  I detect a trace amount of soot that blows out with this noise, coming from the head gasket near the oil filter housing.  Otherwise the car is in good mechanical shape. The transmission shifts very nicely (I am including an extra filter and seal for this transmission). The brakes are great (recent caliper rebuild, pads, rotors, and master cylinder), the suspension has been nicely maintained, the rear axles are intact, the car handles well.  The ignition tumbler & steering lock unit has been replaced (costly new genuine part), and the passenger side rearview mirror was another costly upgrade.

The body is in good condition except for the rear drivers-side panel. There is some rust, especially in the damaged area, but I think that the damage could be repaired.  There are other rust spots on the drivers side.  The sunroof is sealed to keep water out.  The front windshield has a crack near the top, but the rest of the glass is good.  The interior is mostly good, with tobacco brown MB Tex upholstery and a nearly flawless black dash.  Nice headliner.  Complete set of burl wood trim, with some finish chipped off of the console plate.  The original carpet looks a bit rough, but the black MB floor mats are in nice condition.  The vinyl at the top of the back seat has been destroyed by the sun, and the driver's seat shows some wear in some places.  The rear driver's side column panel is detached, and the seatbelt for that seat is severed.  The heater blows warm air, but the A/C is not hooked up presently. The A/C system was retrofitted to R134a about a decade ago.
It has a good set of tires with little mileage on them, but the battery will not hold a charge (buyer needs to provide a working battery).  This is a complete car to restore or part out.

2016 Malaysian Grand Prix recap: Surprises and missed opportunities

Mon, Oct 3 2016

Mercedes-AMG Petronas pilot Lewis Hamilton drove so well in the run-up to the Malaysian Grand Prix that he said before the race, "Honestly, I don't feel anything is going to stop us." On Sunday, the Sepang race showed what it thought of plans and predictions. Heading into the right-hand Turn 1, Sebastian Vettel practically recreated the dust-up at the Belgian Grand Prix three races ago. When Mercedes' Nico Rosberg swept across from the outside line toward the apex, Red Bull's Max Verstappen had to jink right to avoid, touching Vettel's Ferrari on the inside. Vettel speared straight on and hit Rosberg. Vettel's left front suspension broke, ending his race. Rosberg spun and got moving again, but at the back of the pack. That appeared to put Hamilton on a clear run to the checkered flag. His car looked perfect, his pace was perfect, he easily kept Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo and Verstappen behind. A result that would have seen Hamilton retake control of the Driver's Championship – at Petronas' home race – got crushed on Lap 41 when Hamilton's engine blew down the main straight. That put Ricciardo in the lead, followed closely by his teammate. Just two laps before Hamilton's exit, Ricciardo and Verstappen had battled for second place with some of the best driving we've seen all season. Ricciardo drove as if exorcising the demons of missed opportunities earlier in the year, keeping the young Dutchman behind. The two Red Bulls took the flag fifteen laps later in that order, clocking the first one-two finish for a team other than Mercedes since 2014. It's Red Bull's first one-two since Brazil 2013, when Vettel and Mark Weber took the top steps at the last race of the V8 era. Rosberg recovered to take third in spite of a ten-second penalty for an optimistic pass on Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen. The Finn crossed the line 12 seconds later, followed by Valtteri Bottas in the Williams and Sergio Perez in the Force India. In another Belgium repeat, Fernando Alonso drove from the back of the grid to finish seventh. Nico Hulkenberg secured eighth, Jenson Button ninth for McLaren in his 300th grand prix, and rookie Jolyon Palmer scored his first point of the season for Renault in tenth. The issue to trump all others from now until next week's Japanese Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton's terrible luck with engines. Power unit gremlins earlier this season helped drop the Brit to 43 points behind Rosberg after the Russian Grand Prix.

The 10 car brands most expensive to maintain over 10 years

Mon, Apr 22 2024

Car maintenance has got to be one of the least fun things you can do with your free time, right behind going to the dentist and filing your taxes. However, depending on the brand you buy, your time spent at the shop could be much more than you bargained for. Consumer Reports’ new study on the most- and least-expensive-to-maintain car brands found that European car companies are most likely to break your wallet with costs nearly five times that of the automakers at the other end of the spectrum. Land Rover had the highest ten-year maintenance costs, at an average of $19,250. Porsche was second worst with $14,090 in costs. 10 car brands most expensive to maintain over 10 years: Land Rover: $19,250 Porsche: $14,090 Mercedes-Benz: $10,525 Audi: $9,890 BMW: $9,500 Volvo: $9,285 Infiniti: $8,500 Acura: $7,800 Mini: $7,625 Subaru: $7,200 The Euro brands at the “top” of this list arenÂ’t all that surprising. Land Rover has consistently landed as one of the most expensive vehicle brands to maintain for years now, though Porsche is generally viewed as being one of the more solid performance brands. That could suggest that some models donÂ’t always require more repairs, but the fixes they do need are significantly more expensive. Tesla, Buick, and Toyota were the three cheapest to maintain car brands, with 10-year maintenance costs of $4,035, $4,900, and $4,900, respectively. Consumer Reports noted that these numbers could be slightly skewed due to the fact that some automakers offer free maintenance for the first few years of ownership, and all companies cover their new vehicles for at least a few years after the purchase. Routine maintenance is a great way to avoid costly repairs over time, as itÂ’s much cheaper to catch a problem before it starts causing other issues. Check your oil, rotate your tires, and avoid driving like a wild person, and youÂ’ll likely fare much better than others, even if you own one of the scarier-to-maintain brands.
