This is a SPECIAL Mercedes wagon, and was purchased for my wife as a Valentines day surprise to answer her 1979 wish for a Mercedes Wagon
"If we were ever rich enough" to afford one, after she saw and sat in Kim Novak, the movie star's 79 Mercedes in Carmel that year!
I never forgot my promise to buy her one, which became true when I brought this one home to her in 2002. She now has trouble driving, and so we must
reluctantly part with what is a true joy to drive, and has been a good and loyal set of wheels! I have owned some of the best Mercedes ever made: 59 19SL, 59 220SE sedan, 61 300d 4dr hardtop
limo., 72 280SEL 4.5, to name a few. They were all miticulesly maintained, as has this 1981 Wagon.

Purchased in California by the 1st owner for over $38k and brought to Arizona by him, and was always garaged, and Mercedes Serviced, until\
the first engine failed due to the suspension hydro Pump failure He sold me the car with 110 554 miles on it
on 01 23 2002, and  I was able to locate a 1983 Turbo Diesel Wagon engine in Texas which I bought with 85K miles on it
with a Gold Certified mileage warranty. The engine was leak down and compression tested at Tri Star Pete;s Mercedes in Phoenix before installation in the car.
So at the time of the engine install, the car had 110,554 miles on the odometer, and the engine had 85K.   I have all the records and
receipts.

While the engine was being installed , I insisted that all other mechanicals be inspected, and repaired or replaced,
So as the Tri Star Pete Receipts will show, there were extensive replacement of parts in addition to the engine install which include:
Left and Right Upper and Lower Arm front suspension repairs, Drag link and steering repairs, Front Shock set, Motor Mounts, Transmission Mounts, Front Main Seal Replacement,  Transmission shifter bushing, water lines, belts, water Pump, Turbo repairs, and many other items were replaced to guarantee the safe operation of the car. Receipts dated 02 08 02, and 02 19 02.

On 03 06 02 Big O Tires did a front end alignment, and on 04 22 02 Prescott Imports did a valve adjustment.

On 03 25 02 Tri Star Pete replaced the Master Brake Booster, and both rear Hydro Strut shocks, after which there were several other receipts of minor nature until 04 25 05 KC  Auto replaced the front crank shaft seal and serviced the air conditioning  receipt in file. after which oil changes were the only necessities. On 05 26 2005 the odometer stopped at 119585 mi with a
broken.drive gear but was repaired in Sept of 2010 with a replacement drive gear for the original speedometer..

In addition to the above repairs, the oil was changed every 3000 miles, re adjusted the valves a couple of times, replaced the hydro shock accumulators,  and rebuilt the hydro
shock pump, repaired the alternator, and in general kept the car serviced, garaged and it top condition for my now 72 year old wife.
This year I had the vacuum locks serviced and some parts replaced, which also reactivated the climate controls, and put in a new Air Conditioner Pump, and had the air conditioning system purs ged and put into good working order. I have also cleaned the ALADA control system to keep the turbo working well
This is a well cared for GRAND-MAW CAR
We, have other Mercedes to drive, and as such have not put many miles per year on this Mercedes. It has been my wife's get the groceries car and go play with the girls car, and has had little mileage put on it because of that. I am estimating 2000 miles a year for from 05 05 until 10 10 when the odometer was fixed. 5years 10000miles..for a total on the car of 129K plus or minus. and 105K on the engine. .This is a best estimate of current miles. I can  stress that this is the original numbers matching speedometer.

The accessories include:  Third row seat, Fog Lights, Tinted Glass, Chrome Fender arch Moldings, Engine Block heater, Side rubber molding,New White wall radial tires, Sun Roof, AM/FM/Tape Radio, Roof Rack, Rear window washer/Wiper, Dash Mat, 1st Aid Kit, Sony AM/FM/Cassette Radio, rear window defroster

She starts right up on the coldest mornings, uses no oil, does not show any blow by, Shifts correctly, runs Quietly, Looks like almost new inside and out, and gets 31 plus miles per gallon.
Has no rust, and only a very few minor paint blemishes on the original paint.  There is a very small ding on the hood, which can no be seen, unless right on top of it, and several small door dings in the body from parking lot events. Mechanically the only flaw I am aware of is that the cruise control works when it wants to, otherwise everything else is in good order.

This is as close to a turn key car as I have seen on eBay, and with care could last quite a few years with out much further investment.  The engine should go many.many more miles,
I am open to questions, am trying to be as good with my description as possible. The pictures will tell more of this story, and I can e mail more if necessary.
Ask any question for a quick response except "What is your reserve"!

Chris Harris and David Coulthard wring out a Mercedes Fintail at the N"urburgring

Thu, 17 Oct 2013

If there's one thing we've learned from the latest video from Drive, it's that the combination of Chris Harris and David Coulthard will produce some very quotable moments. Take this exchange, for example.
DC: "We are by some way the slowest."
CH: "But we're in a class of three cars, apparently."

Automakers want to stop the EPA's fuel economy rules change, and why that's a shortsighted move

Tue, Dec 6 2016

With a Trump Administration looming, the EPA moved quickly after the election to propose finalizing future fuel economy rules last week. The auto industry doesn't like that (surprise), and has started making moves to stop the EPA. Ford CEO Mark Fields said he wanted to lobby Trump to lower the standards, and now the Auto Alliance, a manufacturer group, is saying it will join the fight against cleaner cars. The Alliance represents 12 automakers: BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, GM, Jaguar Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota, VW, and Volvo. Gloria Bergquist, a spokesperson for the Alliance, told Automotive News that the "EPA's sudden and controversial move to propose auto regulations eight months early - even after Congress warned agencies about taking such steps while political appointees were packing their bags - calls out for congressional action to pause this rulemaking until a thoughtful policy review can occur." The EPA was going to consider public comments through April 2017, but then said it would move the deadline to the end of December. That means that it can finalize the rules before President Obama leaves office. The director of public affairs for the Consumer Federation of America, Jack Gillis, said on a conference call with reporters last week when the EPA originally announced its decision that it is unlikely that President Trump will be able to roll back these changes. Gillis also said on the same call that any attempt by the automakers to prevent these changes would be history repeating itself. "These are the same companies that fought airbags, and now promoting the fact that every car has multiple airbags," he said. "These are the same companies that fought the crash-test program, and now are promoting the crash-test ratings published by the government. So, it's clear that they're misperceiving the needs of the American consumer." There are more reasons the Allliance's pushback is flawed. Carol Lee Rawn, the transportation program director for Ceres, said on that call that the automotive industry is a global one, and many automakers are moving to global platforms to help them meet strict fuel economy rules around the world.
